View Full Version : Star Wars VS Star Trek- GO!

It's an age old argument- which is better: Star Wars or Star Trek? I got into a heated (but light hearted and fun) debate with a friend this morning on which is better... he says Trek, mainly because Kirk had babes, and JJ Abrams. I used the argument that Leia was THE sci-fi babe to end the discussion, and (caveat, I don't count the prequel trilogy) it's more action, less boring nerdy science stuff... [Coffee]

So let's lighten the mood a bit and have a debate... Which is better? Star Wars or Star Trek? And why?

Pfft... Space 1999 is better. Or UFO.
I just don't care for commies in space (Trek) or whiney bitches in space (Wars). Now, pimps in space, that's the stuff.

Star Trek is the UN running around meddling in the affairs of others.

I was thinking about that this morning while chatting with my friend (no worries, he's a conservative libertarian)- Star Wars has a lot of connotations to 1776 (IE: the good guys are the rebels fighting the evil empire). Although way back when I was reading that George Lucas got a lot of inspiration for SW from WWII (Imperial Storm Troopers- hell even their equipment was reminiscent of German Storm Troopers).

Star Trek since the following series like TNG and DS9 were still good. A New Hope was good, Empire Strikes Back was good, and even Return of the Jedi was good until it was remade and they changed up the ending. At least with Star Trek, the reboot was with new people and they changed up the timeline to suit their own wants, though I prefer the original cast to the new. While not every movie from either the TOS or TNG crews were great, they still had at least some entertainment value. The only thing Star Wars had better than Star Trek was lightsabers. [LS]

Plus Star Trek benefits from multiple hotties like Troi (dat ass), Crusher (red head), both women who played the character with the Dax symbiant and 7 of 9. And, some will include Janeway, but not me.

First off, there's no "Make it so" in The Original Series.

If we're talking babe-age, Orion slave girl >>> Leia in gold bikini -- hell, Kirsty Alley as Saavik >>> Leia.

D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold and Harlan Ellison >>> George Lucas in the writing department although I might concede Rick Berman and Brannon Braga were about the same as Lucas. Everything from "Return of the Jedi" onward has been trite and predictable while "City on the Edge of Forever", "The Menagerie" and so many other TOS episodes are still powerfully written even if the SFX aren't as impressive.

We tried it once your way Khan, are you game for a rematch?

Hahahaa, totally!

Yeah, definite hottie (both as a blonde Human or green Orion) in the "Menagerie" pilot! Shatner/Kirk got to make out with a ton of hotties over the years. Leia (even with cinnamon buns) was hot (and young) in Ep.IV, Natalie Portman is a total babe too.

Wrath of Kahn is definitely the best Star Trek movie ever made. Before the latest JJ Abrahms one there was no competition. Can't wait for the next one this Summer.

I thought the green chick in the new ST was hot- but not in the TOS... Not saying that ST sucks, just that I like SW better (but hate the prequel trilogy)- although I do say that Mrs. Portman is one hot mama!
Kahn was my favorite ST Movie as well, with Undiscovered Country as a close 2nd... of course that was until JJ Abrams came in and made ST cool again. I too can't wait for the next Abrams ST film! I'm going to predict right now, the new ST will be one of the best Sci-Fi films to come out in the last 20 or so years.

ETA: With Disney acquiring the SW franchise they did say they're going to make more movies... I'm mixed on this- because Pirates was good, up until the newest one, but I'm worried they're going to replace Han Solo with Nicholas Cage... And I just don't see Cage being able to pull off Solo.

I have Space: 1999 on DVD -- the whole series -- also have Space: Above and Beyond which was what Starship Troopers should have been. I was bitterly disappointed that S:AAB was cancelled. Of course, the ultimate in SF TV was Babylon 5. Superbly written and acted with intricate season-spanning storylines and plot twists -- and eminently quotable.

One of the best (short-lived) TV series is definitely FireFly. Believe it or not, they pulled off a "Western". It was badass, awesome stories, only two seasons I think. GET IT! It's worth your time, watch at least the first few episodes, because the first one seems hokey. There's a reason it has a HUGE cult following begging for it to be restarted.

ALSO, if you like DARK sci-fi, BattleStar Galactica (2004+, 4 seasons?) is probably my favorite, and also a HUGE cult following. It is seriously the darkest sci-fi TV series ever made, not for kiddies. Shit, half the officers are alcoholics, lol. Amazing storyline, addictive, and does the original concept proud. Get past the cheesy "Frack" instead of "Fuck" lingo, and you'll be fine. Starbuck is a cute feisty blonde chick now too, hahaa. This series makes StarTrek look like Disney with all it's happy endings.

Caprica is a BSG related story, also worth streaming/downloading. Another (short-lived) favorite. Awesome cyberpunk stories, great writing and concepts. StarGate:SG1 was a lot of fun following, TONS of seasons (8+?) Never saw Farscape (too many muppety characters), or Babylon 5.

I like the basic premise to Star Wars better than Star Trek's Space UN thing, due to the already-mentioned rebels vs. Empire analogy.

For Sci-Fi, I think Babylon 5 is best.

But Spaceballs for the win!

I used to love Star Trek until I realized it was Communist propaganda.

I loved Star Wars until Lucas screwed it up with Episodes I, II and III.

So that leaves me with Firefly (and to a lesser extent Farscape). I downloaded a copy of Space Above and Beyond but haven't seen it yet so I don't know if it'll rank.

Fuck Star Wars! Some of the worst Science Fiction ever. Lucas took a pathetic single concept of good/bad and serialized it...just like the old weekly/monthly western classic you would go to see at the theatres during the 30's. How the dumb ass made 6 movies about it and made billions is amazing. Can you get worse films than the last 3 of the series? Wow, 6 movies and half of them suck. Jar Jar? Seriously? C3PO? Oh, lets build a "Death Star" that has a tractor beam that you can switch off without anyone noticing, no on/off LED I guess, that makes you vulnerable to destruction from a torpedo launched from a fighter? Who designed this great flaw? GM? Why the fuck didn't the Empire ever bother turning the tractor beam on again or figure out why fighters could suddenly attack the Death Star without being drawn into it? What was the purpose of the white armor the Emire wore? Don't think it ever fucking stopped a single shot ever fired at it.

Star Trek? Best Sci-Fi out there. Not just same old bullshit good/bad but hundreds of stories written by some of the best authors out there to ever write Sci-Fi. Each episode was unique, be it about time travel, war, mythology, birth control, gender issues, Nazis, Rome, death, alternate realities, sex, drugs, racial prejudice, Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare, ganstas, UFOs, US history, etc. And Star Wars was about? Gee, good knight, bad knight. Good empire/bad empire. Good force/dark force.

How about some original ideas or firsts? Star Trek. First black/white kiss on TV, first multiracial cast, first series to address civil rights issues, religion, assisted suicide...
How about the cell phone or Warp travel or transporters or flat panel monitors? Star Wars? Ewoks. Thanks Lucas.

Star Wars was invented by a pussy geek for pussy geeks. Any sex? Hell no. Virgin pure. Star Trek? Major action. Kirk banged anything with a pulse. Next Generation still had it going on with sex planets and drugs. With Star Trek you had major skin and some banging biddies. Star Wars? Carrie Fisher dressed like a nun? Oh baby. The last three Star Wars? Little kids, teen boys, and a fucked up nasty looking liberal cow named Natalie Portman.

Pretty pathetic that the best Star Wars is now in Lego and cartoons on Cartoon Network- appeals to those 6-12 yr old boys.

Soryy, will get off the soap box now.

Star Wars is not SciFi. It is fantasy set in a futuristic world. Knights rescuing a princess? Fantasy.
