A Philadelphia mother thinks school administrators went too far when her fifth grade daughter brought a paper "gun" to class.
Dianna Kelly spoke with FOX 29 (http://www.myfoxphilly.com/story/20653505/mom-says-south-philly-school-went-too-far-punishing-child-for-paper-airplane) about the school's reaction. According to Kelly, her daughter Melody Valentin, was given a paper gun by her grandfather. The "gun" was a sheet of paper torn and folded to look like a pistol.
When another student saw the "gun," which Melody had thrown in the trash can, the boy alerted the teacher. Kelly says that one teacher went over the top when reprimanding Melody.
"He yelled at me and said I shouldn't have brought the gun to school and I kept telling him it was a paper gun but he wouldn't listen," Melody said.
Kelly said this about the incident to FOX-29:

Why did he threaten my daughter? Why did you stand over my daughter and say that you should call the cops on her? "You can be arrested." Why were you trying to scare her?
Kelly has been keeping Melody home from school since the incident last week. She is looking into enrolling Melody in another school soon.
Last week, a kindergartner was suspended (http://news.yahoo.com/kindergartener-suspended-making-terroristic-threat-hello-kitty-bubble-205930852.html) after saying she was going to shoot classmates with her pink Hello Kitty bubble gun. And earlier this month, a six-year-old boy (http://news.yahoo.com/first-grader-suspended-gun-gesture-173036429--abc-news-topstories.html) was suspended after making a gun gesture with his hand and saying "pow."

I guess it was a high capacity version. [panic]

Every single one of those teachers and principals should all be taken out back and beaten severely with sticks and rocks. This is getting pathetic!

I am totally apposed to government education. I will accept government funding with no control of where it's spent. The only way the government should be allowed involvement in education is to give out vouchers to parents so they can take their kids to the school of their choice. Or to home school. It's their choice if they want to send their kids to a liberal anti gun, gun free, killing zone school.

It's a damn good thing I don't have small kids of my own, or I'd go to prison for fucking up some ignorant liberal asshole teacher that treated my kid that way. Scream at my kid and threaten him over a gun drawn on a piece of paper? Or for using his finger and going "pow pow"? You'll be sucking soup through a straw for 6 months after I get done with you.

It is a complete lack of common sense. Political correctness run amuck.

Educators trying to demonize anything to do with guns.. Kids will grow up thinking guns are evil and bad..

...old story about a monkey getting hit cold water when he goes to the top of the stairs... he teaches other monkeys to not go up the stairs.. when he dies no one goes up the stairs ---- and no one knows why.

I remember way back when I was a young child we would play army on the playground- we even grabbed sticks to use as rifles. But that was then, this is now... now we would have been arrested and charged and then expelled. Shame.

When I was a kid, my dad made me fake TNT to use while playing army. PVC pipe painted red, black electrical tape on the ends. :)

Yep. Then they label those kids as nutjobs then start doling out prescription medication so they can deal with their so called violent tendencies.

We did the same- except we didn't do TNT, we made fake C-4 out of a block of wood painted gray, and duct taped a broken Casio watch onto it and some fake wires from the watch to the wood...

This is a great example of why liberals want to enact gun control. They can't stop themselves from yelling at a child over a piece of paper that looks like a gun or a Hello Kitty Bubble gun, so they know in their hearts that they'd probably shoot someone if they had a gun. And if they can't trust themselves with a gun, they can't trust ANYBODY with a gun.

-and then some. It's not limited to elementary schools either, it's on every single web forum I've ever visited.

Kids will grow up thinking guns are evil and bad.

They already do. I've met full-grown adult 'men' from the Northeast (MA/CT/NY/RI/Etc) that nearly went into panic mode when they saw a pistol in a storage hatch on my boat in Florida. From their reaction, you'd have thought they noticed a lit fuse approaching a stick of dynamite.

The agenda to demonize firearms is working very well. Each successive generation gets more neutered. I realize this forum might not be representational of the country on the whole, but if you polled 100 grade school aged boys, how many would have a bb-gun now compared to 30 years ago?

Shooting sports will die by attrition even if no new laws were enacted.

If/When i have kids i will not be enrolling them into public school. Public schools are turning into nothing more than social welfare centers. Seems as though the good public schools are becoming too few are far between.

Every single one? Which ones exactly? I've found most of the ones I'm on are mostly Libertarian/Conservative minded and not anal about political correctness within reason. Granted most are various car, truck, or motorcycle related.

The retard level is breathtaking. Not enough to JUST indoctrinate - they also must demonize, punish, limit 1st amendment rights, and make an example of anyone who doesn't tow the PC culture. Unfortunately, not enough parents care any more to take teachers and administrators to task, so the parents of a little girl with an L-shaped piece of paper are powerless to do anything except pull their child out of school and fina another school. Home school IF YOU CAN, but be aware that many progressives are trying to regulate homeschooling out of existence.

Charter schools are a good option if it's available. Our son is in one and parents are VERY involved in the way the school is run. That's been the biggest difference I've seen between our charter school and a regular public shool.

I carried my .22 rifle to high school when I was a kid! I was on the shooting team.

I've said it so many times: UN Agenda 21. No tinfoil. It's in place all over the country. been around since the 80's. Learn about it. Keep your kids somewhere other than the public school system, no matter what sacrifices you must make to make it happen!! YOU are responsible for your kids, not the gubment...

Friend of mine called me yesterday, he and his 7 y.o. boy were on their way to the store to pick up the brand-new Marlin 795 .22 rifle he'd just bought for the boy, and they were both so excited! Joel called me to see if I could take 'em both out to Ben Lomond Gun Club so we could teach the boy how to shoot it and all about guns and safety. I can't fuckin' wait to get that boy out there and make him into a Real American!

Joel also said he's ready to buy an AR-15 now, and maybe a 9mm pistol for his wife as well. I just had to chastise him for waiting until the worst possible time to go shopping for new guns, and he knows it. But he just kept procrastinating, and he knows now he's gotta pay for it. The wait on the Marlin .22 was 6 days! I told him the BG checks used to run from 15 to 30 minutes.

But anyway, I'm gonna do all I can to give his son a good day at the range, starting with the 4 Rules and as many sub-rules as I can think of, then what cartridges are and how they're constructed/how they work, have him shoot some soda cans full of water with .22 hollowpoints so that he understands just how dangerous those little things can really be, and then we'll get down to FUN! Gonna bring my scoped and red-dotted .22's as well, and maybe even an M1 carbine.

Gotta get me some cheap-ass crappy cookies and crackers and glue 'em onto some cardboard, those are wonderful targets for kids!
