Can anyone give a good reference for a smith. I have a Rem 700 7mm Mag and I bought a take off 700 7 Mag barrel off gun broker. Now need it installed for me. Also would like to have the stock bedded. Have no idea who to take it to.
Thanks for your help

Some people I know have been satisfied with the work done here. Gunny Bob Newman on KOA pimps their services out on the radio. I have had work done on my shotguns there and was satisfied,

I have heard good things about these guys, but have no personal expierance with them. They are in Aurora.

Keep in mind that take-off barrel might not just screw on and headspace up fine. It could turn into a $100-200 project.

My M14 experience with TJ's was less than stellar. They took a horrible gun from West Texas Armory and managed to upgrade it to a very poor gun. But still..

Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, but I personally would not, repeat not, chose Gunsmoke.

If Milt Morris was still working around here I'd recommend him, but I think he packed up and got out of Denver.

I'd be ok with paying up to 200 if that's installing the barrel and glass bedding the stock. Also that's not having some hack doing the work.
This is a Remington 700 that I bought from a friend. His grandfather bought it new in the 60's I'm told. Serial number is a little over 46,000. So far I've bought a new light weight laminate stock, new rings and bases, scope. Also bought an air brush and duracoated all the metal. Looks like a new gun. The trigger on this gun is awesome. Assuming that's just how all guns came out back then. Took it to the range and wouldn't shoot for beans. The barrel had a ruff spot in the last inch near the muzzle. Cut it off and put a home made crown on the barrel. Have yet to shoot it, but I don't have high hopes. Mostly just fooling around. Also I don't want a 22" barreled 7 mag. Didn't check velocity at 24", but also thinking about chopping it down one inch at a time till I hit 16" checking velocity along the way. Then I'll have this new barrel put on.

I will second this. I have had Dr. Mikes men do many things for me with much satisfaction.

Prairiearms it is. With Gunny Bob that's three votes. I think I may have used TJ's before if they were the shop that used to be located in Hoffman Heights shopping center. Anyways they fixed an old shotgun for me that was given to me by my grandfather. It worked for half a box of shells and then broke.
Didn't bother going back.

I kinda like TJ's...he quoted me $20 over the phone to get off a stuck receiver extension and when I brought it in he took it back and wrenched it off and only charged me $10...plus he has that cool clock ringed with 5.56 rounds :D

anyone hear of any other good gunsmiths? Other than prairie arms and tj's. Prarie arms website lists olympic arms as the best of the AR 15's. If they think Olympic arms is the best ar you can buy I am a little suspect of them.

if a smith listed Colt as the only AR i'd look elsewhere.... either way what works for some doesn't work for others.

regarding your rebarrel.
1) i wouldn't hold my breath on $200 or less.
2) unless it's something small most smiths do larger work at their own pace. if you're told 2- 3 weeks plan on that many months, easy
3) knowing you're on a limited price range, i doubt your project would get as much attention as others.

YMMV

The Browning rep in town has told me that the Bass pro has a really good gunsmith although I expect it won't be cheap.
