View Full Version : Any fellow Marines...

I went for a ride today, and stopped at the USMC Memorial in Golden. Our flag is in crappy shape. Are there any other former Marines who would be interested in pitching in to their flag fund? If not, I'll replace the flag myself, but I thought it would be cool if we could make a contribution from the Former Marines of COAR-15. PM me if you can help.
ETA: If we get $1000, we get a name plate on the kiosk. I know that's a lot, ...

----------------------------------------–-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETA: at the advice of th3w01f, I'm bringing the list of contributions from post #38 to this first post, so less people miss it. I'll delete post #38, and keep this post updated, at least daily.
From post#38:
Quite a few have been asking for updates on our total. I'll update this post daily to reflect current donations and a running total. If you are sending a contribution and there is not an amount next to your name, shoot me a PM with how much you plan to donate, so I can update the post.
Also, when I started this thread, I was really only thinking that former Marines would jump on board. I couldn't have been more wrong. Contributors include current and prior service members from each branch of the military, family of military, and stand-up-patriotic citizens. The response really shows what this board is made of. Thank you.
Deadline to contribute is Feb 9.

I'll make the contribution in the name of our entire site, not just the former Marines here. (As long as it's ok with the mods). If we get $1000, we can have a name plate posted on the information kiosk.
Can we make a deadline for contributions of Feb 9th?

Thanks for contributing. Paypal would require money sent to me personally. While I'd be happy to take contributions and then write a single check, I think for total transparency and to prevent any possible perception of impropriety, I'd rather take checks already made out to the association.

Agreed. I'm simply amazed, and humbled, by the response to this. I've gotten about 20 responses. I don't know where we're at yet, regarding a total. Most folks just said they'd send a contribution. I don't know how much. Several for $20-25, a couple $50's. I'll have to see what shows up. I planned to throw in $100, but I tell you what... If someone contributes more than that, I'll match it.
Seeing my flag in tatters really got to me. The response from the COAR community is just, well, I don't have the words. Thanks guys, you all rock!

What has the USMCMA said the money would go towards? Any guarantee or promise that they'll keep a proper flag flying? Is there a light on it at night? You can check out their website. Here's the page that has a copy of the brochure I picked up from the memorial:
http://usmarinecorpsmemorial.com/us-marine-corps-memorial-overview.html
I don't see any way for a "guarantee" that they can keep a proper flag flying, but I certainly hope they would, if they have funds. You can see on the brochure that donations can be earmarked for the flag fund, which these will be.
I have sent them a letter, informing them about this fund drive. I've not yet heard back. I would like to hear from them personally before I send the funds, but I'm not sure if that's a possibility.
I'll put you down for $20. Thanks!

10mm-man and I met with the president of the USMC Memorial Association today, and delivered $1255 toward the flag fund. He was sincerely grateful for our donation. As a way of thanking us, he would like to have some sort of a presentation when our name plate is added to the kiosk at the memorial. I don't know the date yet, but probably a month or two out. I'll post more info as I get it. It would be awesome if we had a good turn-out.
There's a lot more that goes into keeping that memorial up than I ever realized. Thanks again for all your contributions.
I will continue to forward any checks I receive, and will keep the first post updated to reflect our contribution.
For anyone who sent a check made out to me, or used paypal: I wrote out a separate personal check for each of you, with your screen name on the front. I will forward everyone copies of their cancelled checks when they are cashed.
Thanks again for all your help with this. We really came together and showed our colors.
