View Full Version : Tanfoglio Witness in .40S&W
So I finally pulled this one out of the safe. I have had it for about 10 years after paying 150 for it from a friend. Fired about 150 rounds through it with the 10 rd and 8 rd mags it came with to make sure everyting wroekd and had no issues. The mags were from the ban era and the 8 rd I was told was to comply with MI hunting laws saying that sidearms could hold no more than 8 rounds in a detachable magazine. So I was looking around for a newer, higher capacity mag recently and there seems to be 2 versions of this pistol. The older steel frame like mine and a polymer that looks like it has smaller dimensions. Maybe my Google skills suck tonight, but I am having trouble finding out if they use the same magazines as a few say they do, but others have listed a 12 rd for the polymer and a 14 rd for the steel frame. Should I just grab the 14 rd ones and call it good? I haven't messed with this much since it's the only .40 cal I have and I have 4 9mm and 3 .380 guns.
I'm fairly certain all of the mags are interchangeable.

What matters is the frame width and that is relative to its age, as you discovered. A serial # search will give you the vintage. Google EAA Witness Tangfolio and you will find bunches of info.
EAA's website can be a pain but they do have mags for both widths.
I stand corrected. [Beer]

I had a full size steel EAA Witness with interchangeable top ends in 9x19 and .40S&W. Worked well for me.
Baby eagle mags also work in it. At least me EAA witness in .40 took them no issues.
OK, so after asking Tanfoglio about my pistol, they said it was made in 1997 and gave me the part numbers of mags it can hold. Apparently, there were two types of steel frames made at that time. One came from factory in either 9mm or .40 SW, the other came in either 10mm or .45 ACP. The ones that came in the smaller calibers have a slightly smaller frame than the larger calibers and have different mags even though they can be swapped for different calibers. The 9mm and .40 ones can swap between each other and to a .22 LR kit as can the 10mm and .45 be swapped with each other. The main advantage to the larger frames is that they can also be swapped back and forth with kits for 9mm, .40 and .22, but this created the need for having different magazines depending on what the pistol was originally chambered for. So now I'm thinking I might either sell this one, or try and find a 9mm change over kit.

Good info and thanks for posting that, I was always told the variance was due to age.
I believe EAA has conversion kits but they want you to send them the frame so they can fit it.
