A motorist traveling through the Oise department in France died Sunday after receiving a bullet in the head. His death was the result of an incredible accident. According to French news sources (http://www.thelocal.fr/page/view/freak-boar-bullet-ricochet-kills-passing-driver#.UQk07L_AfAK) on Jan. 30, hunters were tracking a wild boar (http://www.examiner.com/topic/wild-boar/articles) when one of them took a shot at the animal and the bullet ricocheted off the boar, hitting the passing motorist in the head.
When police arrived and investigated the scene, investigators could not understand how such an accident could happen. "Everything is still to be clarified," stressed the prosecutor.
Throughout the day investigators carefully scrutinized the ground in search of a projectile, which would be a clue that might explain the tragedy.
According to preliminary investigations, the shooter was a 68 year old experienced hunter. The man was perched on a small portable watchtower several hundred meters away when he shot the bullet that richocheted off the boar, then traveled 2 km to kill the man.
Guy Harlé d’Ophove, president of the local hunters’ federation had this to say about the freak accident,

"It’s unheard-of...the bullet rebounded [off the boar] at almost a right angle. In terms of probability, it’s very unlikely.”
The results from the autopsy of the victim should be known soon.

Ok, there's so many problems with this, I don't know where to start. The hunter would have to be using a LASER GUN in order to fire a round fast enough to impact an animal, rebound off, and carry on for another TWO KILOMETERS with enough juice to kill somebody, without dropping into the dirt long before. Don't know too many hog hunters who use lasers. Not to mention whatever's left that a Frog can legally own, probably amounts to black powder and spitballs. lol.

Something's rotten in Denmark...

What I don't understand is that how does the bullet not penetrate the boar but is strong enough to ricochet and kill someone.

You see, even using guns for 'hunting' needs to be curtailed!

Exactly. I have no problem believing the ricochet bit. But I can't think of a small-arms round out there that would impact something that hard, and then have enough energy left over to kill somebody two clicks away.

Yeah, that doesn't add up. To get two kilometers out of a ricochet, it would have be arcing like artillery fire. At which point, presumably the body work of the car would stop or at least slow down the bullet enough to be nothing more than a (very) painful, but non lethal impact.

I have hunted boar in France, Belgium and Germany and they can be big and take a couple of round to be put down..... But I have never seen a bullet ricochet on their hide! This is crazy.

Oh wait: I just followed one of the link and it says the boar was hit in the head (and died), that the bullet ricochet and hit the motorist at 250 meters.... Not 2 km. The shooter was in a tree stand, his back to the road. The 2 km value was given by the local gendarmes as the practical lethality range of the round....

^see, I knew I didn't believe that bogus story at face value.

Yeah, somewhat a tough time believing this one. Many years ago, I caught a ricochet, I was a lot closer than 2 km and it barely broke the threads of the pants I was wearing. I admit, I bled like a stuck pig for awhile, and still have the scar.

Thanks for clarifying. The 2km thing threw the entire story away.

I'm not believing it either. If you've ever worked in the pits at a military range, you've likely either been hit by a ricochet or stood next to someone who was. I caught one in the thigh that ricocheted off the steel target holder and it hurt like hell but didn't even break the skin. This was a 5.56 NATO ball round, fired from 300 yards from an M16A2 and hit me less than 10 feet from where it hit the carriage. Soooo. . . [bs]

Motorist hit in the head. Convertible top down ? Through an open side window ? On a motorcycle or scooter without a helmet ? Possibly died from the resulting crash from being struck in the head by the ricochet ? Too many unknown facts.

Remember a few years back, that 10 year old girl that got killed from a BB that came through a screen on an open window ? And another child that was killed while sitting on a living room couch from a bullet shot at a street light across a park then passed through an exterior wall ?

guy in a car, driving his wife to work, window rolled down because he was smoking.... Random. Now the interesting part: the 50 year old guy who died was a local green party member and had several clash with the local hunting club....

I took a ricochet in the throat once, but it was only from a pistol at an IDPA match.

Is it bad that I don't actually know how long a kilometer is? Also to catch a ricochet from this makes you basically the most unlucky person on earth.

It is like 4/5 of a mile. A 5k run is 3.1 miles. I'm sure you already looked it up by now.

Closer to 0.6 miles than 0.8 miles.
