I have been looking for a decent used cabinet for some time and every one of them in the 500.00 price range even if used is tiny and sold before I even blink.
Therfore,I have decided to build one myself.
Does anyone else want to build one as well? I am looking for others to co-build with. I find that when you stick several people together you can get better results in creative design.
I am in the North of Colorado but I would consider going to you if you have an awesome area to build in and a table saw.
Feel free to email me or call. 970-292-8595 Thanks,Dan

i'm up north and have welder (small wire feed hobart) plasma cutter and compressor.
you can price steel from a few different sources. the place on hwy 14 by wally world, then we can see what my local guy can do.
how big a cabinet you thinking of ? if you don't have a 60-80 gal min tank your compressor will be running 24/7 and burn out real quick.

A Camel was a Horse designed by a committee.
Haha, how often do you get to use that one....

He's waited his whole life, underlined the passage in the book he read and ran giddy like through the house after he posted it. Let's not all ruin his high. [Stooge]
I was thinking of making it out of wood to save money. Metal costs a hell of a lot compared to wood. Unless someone has a source of cheap steel, then I am all about that!
I have both a 60 and 80 tank. Compressor is on the 60 I plan on using the 80 only for sandblasting so I dont go deaf inside the garage.
I know I want the entire setup on wheels, for the back of the unit to hold my pressure pot and vacuume (hepa of course)
So unless someone has 3-4 4x8 sheets of steel (thatI can have at a steal), Im going wood. I am thinking big as well. 4.5x5x3.5 maybe. I want to also explore the idea of clamshell opening or side door.
I am open to ideas as I am unsure how I want to design some areas like media recovery and filtration. I didnt see anything from you yet CJ....Come on...send me some plans! [Muaha]

You are going to need something more solid than wood for inside the cabinet or you will blast through the sides. As for collecting the medai, a simple drop system should work well. If you are going to use steel, have you thought about aluminum? With all of the beer you drink, you should have a cabinet within 2 days.
Could could cover the inside with a thin layer of sheet metal....?

well in that case i have 2 glue guns and wood screws.
you'll impregnate the wood with so much silica, it will be like sidesteping 10grit sandpaper.
i suggest sheetmetal liner. the wood will weigh as much if not more than a decent metal one
here's 1 alternative ready to go.

and another. for the asking price of $100 delivered i'd probably off set some of your money for a copy of the plans??

Yeah, I did look at both. I can even get a decent quality one for 400 off ebay. But I am not looking to do some rifles,I am looking to do everything I can with my rebuild of a Scout. If I build one out of wood and line it or not it should last me for as long as I am looking for.
I want to do hoods, fenders, axles ect. AND smaller parts as well.
No one I know of has any "in" with a steel dealer or I would bang it out in metal. For the price of a small shitty HF cabinet, I should be able to make a mondo sized one that will do more and cost the same or less.
Several of the online builders that have made thier own boxes all say that plywood holds up fine on its own.
I am considering some steel or aluminum just to act as a protectant.
Having build custom cabinets for kitchens in the past, I have a pretty good idea of how to build the box itself. I am hoping for some ideas on the ventaliation, how to clamshell the box, ect. Just some of the finer points of its design.
Also, I am not setup for building wood cabinets. If someone was, It would go quickly at thier place. I am hoping someone has a desire to help out and maybe a desire to see the finished cabinet.
We will see. [Bang]
