Too funny. They don't prosecute the federal laws already on the books, and they want more. Call an ATF agent and ask them how hard it is to get a straw purchase case prosecuted. They will tell you, it's almost impossible. It won't reach the AUSA's threshold. Been there, done that. It's simply an overloaded system right now.
straight down the list support of the D recommendations, the head of the ABA supports it.
did the committee rubber stamp it? Because I strongly doubt they are speaking for all 400,000 members.

Chairman Leahy, Ranking Member Grassley, and Members of the Committee:
I am Laurel Bellows, President of the American Bar Association (ABA). I am submitting this statement on behalf of the ABA for the Committee’s consideration for its January 30, 2013 hearing on “What Should America Do About Gun Violence?” The ABA, with nearly 400,000 members, commends the Committee for holding this hearing and its early scheduling. We also commend President Obama and Vice-President Biden for their leadership. They have acted responsibly in instituting and conducting the Administration’s recently concluded comprehensive review of recommendations to end gun violence in America, resulting in the issuing of the far-reaching report, “Now Is The Time: The President’s Plan to Protect Our Children and Our Communities by Reducing Gun Violence.” . . .

From the attorneys I talked to, their membership was dropped years ago after these nutbags went on some other crusade.

This one is simple to figure out... More Gun Control = More Victims = More Lawsuits = More Money for Attorneys.
ABA is all about mo' money for their members!!

Lawyer and politician are often one in the same: 18 of the past 41 presidents have been lawyers.
Look, the anti-gun people like to paint all gun owners as nutjobs and all guns as evil because a few nutjobs with guns have done terrible things. Let's try to be better than that. If you are going to slam lawyers because of the ABA position, then you better find a dark corner somewhere, because the American Medical Association, the National Education Association and just about every religious organization including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Council of Churches, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, PICO National Network, the Islamic Society of North America, Hindu American Seva Communities and the Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Jewish movements have taken the same position, along with dozens of other organizations.
Keep in mind that when there are legal challenges to these new laws it will be lawyers fighting those battles and when good people get falsely accused or accidentally run afoul of of some gun law it is a lawyer that will try to get them out of the mess. When the NRA files briefs or supports lawsuits on gun issues who do you think writes those briefs and appears in court? I can tell you it won't be the doctors or the teachers.
More often than not, organizations such as the ABA do not represent the view of their members or of the occupation as a whole, anymore than some of our elected representatives actually represent our views. We have all seen the police chiefs and others who come out in favor of these laws, but I can assure you that in many situations they do not speak for the views of the rank and file.
Sure, most politicians are lawyers, but most lawyers are not politicians. Heck, some bar owners become politicians...There are plenty of pro-gun and pro-constitution lawyers out there; don't lump them all into the anti-gun group.

I hope your lashing out reply wasn't aimed at me or Hatidua?
If so re-read my original post, I make no such "lumping" of all lawyers in one catagory, I specifially made reference to "gun friendly" lawyers. What Hatidua said is true, a high percentage of Politicians ARE/WERE lawyers.
It wasn't meant to lash out at anyone. I am very frustrated with the current political situation and that frustration probably affected the tone of my post. I am sorry if my post came across as harsh.

No offense taken, just your tone in the reply. I fully understand the frustration! [Beer]
