Try running white vinegar through it 6-8 times, then plain water with no K-cup in it 6-8 times.

My parents have sent theirs in twice for repair, so you're definitely not the only one with a faulty one. Hope you can get it sorted out without too much more stress! Nobody should be deprived of their coffee!

I've been using them since 2001 at home, and they've been great. Each I've had have lasted 4-5 years without issue. Since you're out in Calhan, are you on a well? If so, and the problem is that its possibly clogging up, filtered water helps.

Here's what fixes mine every time. Open the lid where the cup goes and look up inside for the needle that pokes the whole in the top of the foil.

Take the tip of a knife or a toothpick and clean out the hole and the slits in the side of the needle. It gets clogged with coffee grounds and won't come loose no matter how much you deacale if.

Cofi, that sucks. If you're on your third coffeemaker, I'd see if the missus would be interested in a different appliance. Unless you plan on buying water to out into it, in addition to the fancy coffees and etc, it doesn't sound like a new one will work.

percolators are bad because basically they recook the coffee over and over again.

A french press or an AeroPress will make a great cup of coffee (but the downside is they're a PITA to clean up after).

But honestly the easiest is still the best; The Chemex Coffee Maker (http://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/).

http://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/images/product_classic_8cup_01_large.jpg

We currently have a drip coffee maker at home that works ok but will probably be dead soon ... once it dies we'll switch to the Chemex.

On a side note, I can see where the Kureig machines might be useful if they work well with these (http://www.amazon.com/Keurig-K-Cup-Reusable-Coffee-Filter/dp/B000DLB2FI). Any of you Kureig users use the "K-Cup"? If so how's it work?

Those cuisinart ones are great and will last forever.

Single cup coffee makers like a Keurig are cost effective if you only drink 1 cup of coffee a day (especially if you buy the cups from a wholesale place like Costco or use your own grounds... gets it down to about $.40 per cup or less). If you drink more than one or two 8oz cups a day, you should probably just brew a traditional pot of coffee. If you like good coffee, buy a french press and learn to use it.

I have a couple of french presses. Tastes more like an Americano...but cleaning those things is a pain. Also requires a coarser grind.

With the drip maker, you just have to wipe it out once every couple of months whether it needs it or not. Just dump the filter with grounds and rinse. The one we have also has a timer to automatically brew in the morning and an adjustable thermostat to keep the coffee hot for hours.

We fill our travel mugs and put the rest in a thermos. Keeps us in excellent coffee through the day. The cost probably averages to less than $.50/pot.

Ditto. Makes great coffee. We have a Delonghi 15bar for espresso (Latte for her, Americano's for me).

Meh, I've never been impressed with the coffee out of Keurigs. It does cost less than Starbucks for a single cup portion but a whole pot of fresh ground Hawaiian coffee costs me about $0.80 - $1.20 depending on which beans I buy (Guatemalan or other gourmet beans can be half of that) while a single K-cup is about $0.50. The one thing it has going for it is convenience, particularly when you have an office of people with different preferences, but I'd just as soon make a pot of fresh-ground even if I toss half the pot away.

We got one a few years ago and it crapped out after about a year and a half. They replaced it for free, even though it was past the warranty. I understand that they don't do this anymore

The new one has been working fine since and we use the hell out of it. My wife likes the fancy k-cups with all the flavors and stuff. I use the screened cup that you can put your own grinds in. I'm a bit of a coffee snob, so I like to grind it every morning.

I had a similar experience with Keurig and Cuisinart coffee makers. I ended up with two different options:

One is a Grindmaster OPOD that uses coffee pods. The pods are FAR more versatile than K-Cups and the quality of the brewer and finished coffee is miles ahead of Keurig. Photo is here -->
http://the-gadgeteer.com/assets/grindmaster-opod-1.jpg

The other option requires more work to extract a cup of coffee, but it is well worth it. The process has some similarities to the French Press mentioned upthread. Here is a link to the seller's website --> http://aerobie.com/products/aeropress.htm, and a photo -->

Pretty sure you will like the results with the Aerobie. A few things I found:

* Use a decent grinder for the beans. The cheap ones leave quite a bit of 'dust.' If you buy beans at the store and grind them using the store's grinder, use the 'fine' setting.
* You will use quite a bit more coffee than with a brewer - BUT - the flavor will be vastly better. Some people compare the result to an espresso, though coffee purists take exception to use of that term to describe it. In any case, it makes one hell of a strong and flavorful cup.
* Clean up is a breeze. Takes maybe 30 seconds.
* I've given some of these as gifts to people I know love coffee. Everybody raves about it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

A coworker of mine likes the Keurig. He's had 2 or 3 crap out on him over the years but has managed to get free replacements every time so it doesn't bother him because he likes the convenience of a fresh cup when he wants it.

Personally, I think the coffee out of the Keurig is mediocre at best. I also prefer the American drip-brew method with high quality (I usually buy 4-5 lbs of freshly roasted Maui or Kona coffee beans annually when I visit the family) fresh-ground coffee using paper filters. I've found the perma-filters don't work as well for me because I like a very fine grind (almost but not quite espresso level) and they don't remove some of the oils that paper filters do. I'll drink French press in a pinch but am not a fan -- one of the few areas where I disagree with Alton Brown.

The one environment French press works for me is when I'm camping -- it IS much better than cowboy coffee and keeps the hot water pot "clean" so I can give the Scouts plain hot water for their cocoa but it requires me to carry another piece of junk with me. Generally, I'd rather just brew regular coffee and make the Scouts carry their own dang pot for hot water.

DHC

Where are you getting your pods?

These two online sources - Coffee Artisan (www.thecoffeeartisan.com) and CoffeeWiz (www.coffeewiz.com).

We use the OPOD for both coffees and teas. Kids and wife like flavored coffees. I tend to use single origin and stronger coffees.

We have the Keurig Platinum (from Costco) and LOVE IT! We experienced a couple of problems with it the first week... come to find out it was rectified by just pushing the pods down onto the spike when inserting them instead of just having the lid do the work when you close it. But we rarely use the pre-made pods. We have the reusable filters and put our own Starbucks coffee in there. Easy! No mess! Works great! It serves a dual-purpose for us... we use it as a hot-water spigot (perfect for tea or ramen).

Agreed!!! Works great....but if you return it to Costco you get another 60+free KCups.

I have been through 5
diff models... By far the most reliable is the 100 dollar tankless... I have that at work -zero- ftf's
i had the platinum... It was like my sig 556r.. Fte's, ftf's.. And severe inconsistent performance....
Elite, and one other were unreliable at best.
i just now aquired a vue.
4months about.. No issues so far...
my wife is amazingly adept at getting stores to upgrade her when the last model goes all sideways.
only ones i would even consider buying again is the tankless and the vue

I bought my wife one, and her mother bought her one. I got her one of the more expensive K-cup models, and her mom bought her a tankless one. Mine stays here at home, the other is at her work. No problems here thus far, took the time and washed the filter as you should. Whenever you use certain kinds of mixes, you should run another brew cycle with no cup in it to wash it out. She finds the more expensive one does a better job, but her coworkers are just tickled about having one in the building. Works fine for us, as I don't drink coffee, and all she ever wants is a cup here and there. If we both drank coffee like my mother, then we would need a commercial coffee maker

I read the whole thread and don't have a Keurig but I do drink coffee and care about how it's made and where it comes from. I can't stand Keurig-style coffee, have never had a good cup of coffee from one although I've had a few cups that were barely acceptable. In High altitudes, you have to push the cup and pierce the bottom of the cup first to let out the air. Otherwise every time the top pierces first and the grounds go up into the unit.

We had one go bad after about 1.5 years. Kuerig replaced it no questions asked even though it was way past the warranty, but I understand they are holding true to their warranty these days.

The replacement worked fine for about a year, but we got tired of the crazy cost for the cups. We figured it out to be about $0.70 a cup if you buy the standard boxes from Target, King Soopers, etc. We got the "fill yourself" cups but that was messy. If you drink one or two cups a day, that's fine. We drink a LOT of coffee around here so we back to the old fashioned drip type to save a few bucks. And our friends got a free Kuerig and love it. I didn't read through all the replies so I don't know if this has been said yet but our altitude puts those little cups at a pretty high pressure. When you put the cup in a close the lid the first thing to get puncture is the foil top and the high pressure inside the cup can and does make coffee grounds shoot out. Those grounds find there way into the little tube that puts water through the cup and can permanently clog it. Sometimes a neddle will clear it sometimes it won't. The better solution is to press the cups down by hand before you close the lid punturing the plasstic cup bottom where no grounds can come out. This releases the pressure and you don't have to worry about the water tube getting clogged. Sounds long winded but it takes literally no more time to push it down by hand.

Interesting thread. My sister bought my mom a kuerig at Christmas. Mom lives alone and has a couple cups of coffee each morning. After reading this thread awhile back I told her to only use filtered water from the fridge. Well, last week her 5 month old Kureg sh*t the bed and is no longer working. I'll need to read up and maybe give it a cleaning for her but not sure what other options there are other than to send it back. I was debating getting one but with 3 coffee drinkers in my house I think the lifetime on these just isn't worth it.

I don't see how that's any different from cone-filtered drips which are my preferred brewing method. Their special filter is the key IF you want that much filtration. Personally, I've never found anything wrong with the brown paper filters I get at Sam's Club. I don't like the "permanent" filters as their pore size is too big but the brown paper filters I pick up have just the right density for my tastes. The glass carafe in that Chemex brewer doesn't look like it would retain heat well so you're going to have to pour off into a thermal carafe or keep it warm somehow -- and burners are what kill good coffee over the course of the morning.

I don't see how that's any different from cone-filtered drips which are my preferred brewing method.
Based on my limited observation (only had the thing a week or so) I think the way it works is that since you pour the coffee into the filter directly it pushes the grounds up and coats the surface of the filter with grounds instead of sitting in the bottom of the filter as a lump of grounds. I think this allows it to extract the oils from the grounds much more evenly (without "overbrewing" the bottom grounds and "underbrewing the top). So any other similar brewing method that requires you to pour hot water over the grounds instead of letting the machine slowly drip them should achieve the same result.

The glass carafe in that Chemex brewer doesn't look like it would retain heat well so you're going to have to pour off into a thermal carafe or keep it warm somehow -- and burners are what kill good coffee over the course of the morning.
I tend to drink the coffee fast enough that it's not a problem. And I've also found that well brewed coffee (regardless of the method) survives gentle reheating in the microwave ok. But like I said, it rarely sits long enough for me to have to deal with it.

I may be wrong about how it actually works, but all I have to say is that the coffee I've brewed in it is better than any other method I've used to brew the same coffee (drip, French Press or percolated ... yeah, I know percolating sucks but I have a steel percolator I can use on a campfire).

Aloha_Shooter
05-19-2014, 22:31
Mmmm ... most of the cone filter drip machines I've used do the same thing in terms of coating the sides of the filter as hot water pours into the cone and the Chemex website claims their special filter holds back many of the oils (where much of the taste is). Sorry, I'm a physicist and engineer so I have a tendency to look at physical mechanisms when people claim machine X is "best" and I just don't see mechanically how that glass carafe is really any different from the cone brewers I've used.

I will agree with you that gentle reheating in the microwave doesn't appear to damage good quality coffee -- it's the direct heat from pads under the pot that makes coffee "burn" (one reason thermal carafe brewers have become so popular).

My mom has had issues with her 6 month old kuerig. She called and they told her not only use filtered water but if it's from the fridge to let it warm up before using it. They told her not to use cold water. (figure that one out.) That and the paperclip routine on the nozzle and her's is working again. I haven't read the entire thread so apologies if the cold water tip has been mentioned already.

Update: 3 years and 3 moves later, my Keurig is still working perfectly. I push the cups down to break the pressure on the bottom of the cups, but I don't think Mrs. HB does (when we use pre-made cups... Which is about 1/2 the time). We just use tap water and have only "cleaned" it once by running vinegar through it several times because our old tap water left some mineral deposits. I think I've stuck a needle or paper clip up the water nozzle once or twice in the entire 3 years. I have the same Keurig in my office and it gets used 20+ times a day by people who don't take care of it. It's been going strong for 2 years now.

That being said, nothing beats a proper French press with quality beans ground to the right size. :)

Everyone once in a while, I have to stick a paper clip up into the nozzle that injects water into the K-cup to clean it out... but that is the only maintenance I have ever done on it.

While I agree with your sentiment regarding technology in general it's hardly Starbuck's prices. Though it is 3x the cost of using a traditional brewer, there are no wasted half pots, buying filters, daily cleaning and such. The convenience of also making iced tea, hot chocolate, etc. by the glass/cup makes it worth the extra cost for me.

If you fill your own cups with storebought grounds or self-ground beans, it cuts the cost as low as $.10 per cup at the cost of a little convenience.

I too was skeptical, all I know is that the coffee has improved over the drip coffee maker I used before (and it also had a cone filter). It might actually be the Chemex filter is better, I just don't know.

It might also have something to do with how I'm heating the water. My parents gave us one of these (https://www.capresso.com/water-kettle-frother-h20-plus.shtml)for Christmas...

I also have (B150) the same unit (sort of) as the one at work (B155) and it gets used and abused heavily at work. The guy that comes and services them says at high altitude here the trick is to puncture the bottom first like you said because when they invented these cups they didn't take into consideration the pressures involved in a k-cup as it gets sold in high altitude. He also says to run an empty cup of hot water through periodically. Other than that I have had very little issues with mine, and had it nearly a year now. It is directly plumbed to tap water.

The B150 and the B155 are technically "commercial" versions, and they do NOT tke the reusable K-cups that you can put your own grounds in without modifications, or at least not yet. The maintenance guy said that when they designed the commercial ones they didn't think anyone would bring their own cup attachment like that at work or whatever. (PM me if you find one!)

EDIT: I am also not a coffee weanie, so I am perfectly happy with the 100 k-cup box at Costco for 35 bucks.

We've had a Capresso electric kettle for several years. Does a great job at boiling water, but you definitely have to work to keep the scale off the inside.
