View Full Version : February 23 IDPA Match at Colorado Rifle Club (Byers)??

The Colorado USPSA website (www.ecoususpa) match schedule page says that there is a IDPA match February 23 at the Colorado Rifle Club in Byers. Is that correct?

Will there be a new shooter's orientation at that match? I'm a long-time USPSA shooter who wants to try IDPA.

Thanks,

Chris

I can't find where I read it, but just the other day I read that MarkCO is running a "test" IDPA match at Byers. He would be the one to PM for the answer to your questions. My understanding is that if enough people show up, they may do a recurring event, and if not, it will be "one and done."

Here was one discussion: http://www.ar-15.co/threads/53075-Looking-for-a-few-good-People?highlight=byers+idpa

It's not if enough people show up, it's if a core of people step up to actually run future matches. MarkCO already has quite a bit on his plate.

I'm way the heck too new to help run a match, but I live on that end of Denver and would be willing to do what I can.

I talked to Steve L at CRC about this. I admitted that I'm not the person to MD the thing. I'm not responsible enough. I would, however, be willing to get SO certified and help out in that regard. Hopefully someone will step up to the plate. I would enjoy shooting another IDPA match per month.

Let me clarify a bit...

I started FRIDPA with Tom Judd and Michael Bane, was on the BOD and ran many of the matches the first few years. I don't choose to shoot IDPA at this point just becasue I have too many other things going on. I run 3 major matches a year as well as monhtly matches. The ONLY reason I put this "Test" match on the calendar is because I truly believe three things:

1. All trigger time is good time.
2. IDPA is a preferred form of competition for some.
3. CRC has the range and equipment to support multiple shooting disciplines.

The match on the 23rd is as much an interest meeting as anything else. If being involved in running the IDPA matches at CRC is something you want to do, then I don't care if you have never shot a match or shot 1000 matches. I am willing to help any group of willing volunteers get trained, equipped, etc. so they can run matches. Those wanting to be involed in running matches only need to be a member of CRC, be willing to get the required training from IDPA, have integrity and play nice with all the other disciplines.

CRC already runs a huge variety of matches including Zoot, SASS, USPSA, Rimfire, Steel Challenge, 3Gun, Sniper and all the traditional straight line matches. The East ranges matches fall under a director and two basic groups...Cowboys and Practical shooters. The range is capable of handling local, state, regional and national level events and is fairly unique in that respect.

Set up at 8am, shooters meeting at 9:30, shoot at 10. 5 stages, $20, about 80 rounds.

Range info can be found at www.crci.org (http://www.crci.org)

Let me clarify a bit... Set up at 8am, shooters meeting at 9:30, shoot at 10. 5 stages, $20, about 80 rounds. Will there be a safety briefing for those of us who have not shot a match previously? I could leave the hardware at home and help with setup/administrativia and learn as much as possible if not...

Can anyone say how sensitive will the CRC match be for weather cancellation?

We will do a shooters meeting, but we won't be set up to do an intro safety course at this match.

CRC is like any other front range location. We have concelled a few matches due to weather, but not a lot.

Does this result in noobs being spectators?

I'm looking forward to running IDPA at CRC and hope it turns into a regular event. It would be great to get another option to run the Classifier match near Denver. Now I'm kicking myself for signing up for the Rocky Mountain 300 in May before finding out when FRIDPA will run the Classifier this year.

Does this result in noobs being spectators? It's starting to look that way. It'd be worth showing up to see the range, help set up (if there's something to set up) and meet people, but I'd still like to know how to pack! Any official word from those in the know?

MarkCO
02-20-2013, 12:34
I appologize that we can not accomodate new shooters at this match. This is purely a test match to see if there is interest. If there is, then those who step up will have to get their ducks in a row and get safe shooter checks, natonal affiliation, targets and all the other scoring and admin stuff dealt with. I will help for sure, and as I told some who e-mailed me, I do know the IDPA rules. I started FRIDPA with Tom and Michael and shot it for several years, worked the state match as the RM and was classified as Master before I moved on to setting up other clubs and matches. The ONLY reason I am doing this is because CRC is a great venue that can use another action pistol sport and there seemed to be a desire. I beleive all trigger time is good time.

THERE will be plenty to do. I certainly want set-up help. If you are new and don't shoot, volunteer to stick with a squad and keep score. The more help there is, the more likley it will become a regular match. If there are 4 of us out there...

The short version of the tour...

there are turkeys out there. Lots of turkeys. Don't shoot the turkeys. Some snakes too. Don't shoot them, unless they are rattle snakes... In which they threaten the turkeys. In that case, protect the turkeys.

I am interested in this- a lot. I would like to be in on this and can help organize. I have some family issues for this first match, but am doing what I can to get out there for Sat. Hopefully, see you on Sat.

The short version of the tour... I have my membership app printed out, I'll get it sent in next week. This is a long winded way of saying "no clue where I'm going", so I'll ask the obvious...where do I go? If there are berms on three sides, an occasional whizzing sound, and puffs of dirt kicking up all around me the assumption will be I'm in the wrong place... Aren't rattlesnakes protected? They ran into protected sea lions eating the protected salmon on the Columbia, and in true government fashion still haven't come up with an intelligent answer decades later...they tried putting the sea lions through sensitivity training but that worked for them about as well as it did me.

MarkCO

Here is the directions link to CRC: http://crci.org/Ranges/Directions/tabid/623/Default.aspx

Rattlesnakes are not protected, but you do have to possess a valid small game license to shoot them. The range is a game preserve.

You will go down the road after the entrance gait. Stay right. Staying right when you can turn right will take you all the way to the appropriate berms. When you see a parking lot -park. There is a fence seperating the berms from the parking lot. See you there!

I am not certain about this but, at least on other ranges that I know of, you need to wait a few days for your new membership application to be processed before they let you shoot as a member. Attendance to the "New Members Orientation" may also be mandatory before your membership card can be released. I just say this so that you make sure that you check with whomever the Safety Officer is for the range on that day before you start blasting away.

A lot of members here are CRC members but no official forum. 4th Saturday would be great because its two weeks off FRIDPA, and is open for the east berms. There's a couple other options but in my opinion this is the best time.

There is no decision on which day to hold any future IDPA matches there. Among our group I think the consensus was to probably hold it this day, the 4th Saturday of each month. That way it doesn't interfere with FRIDPA, NOCOIDPA, and Sunday AGC USPSA. That sounds good to me. First Saturday is taken by Multi-gun at CRC, otherwise it could be a candidate. IMO, 4th Saturday is pretty ideal.

BTW, thanks so much to Mark and Steve for putting this on for us. Our group may be able to contribute a pretty good amount, as we talked about after the match. Regardless of who takes this on, I volunteer to get certified as SO and help out in that regard at a minimum.

Also, thanks to everyone that came out and shot the match, and even those who helped setup that weren't able to shoot. We had an awesome turnout for a "trial" match and questionable conditions. The weather turned out great and I started on my tan early this year.

So far I know of another two matches that take place on the 4th Saturday: 1) WHAC Defensive Pistol Match and 2) PSAC USPSA. I'd like to shoot more IDPA this year but that Saturday of the month is already taken for me. I would certainly be in if you folks would consider holding it on the 2nd Sunday instead. The only other pistol match that I know of on that day is Pueblo USPSA (which btw is a great match but a farther drive).

Regardless of the decision, I wish whomever takes over this match lots of luck. I also know a thing or two about holding pistol matches so, if you guys (or gals) need any help figuring how to get everything rolling, feel free to contact me.

Yes, thanks Kris for taking the role as “THE GUY” to lead the team and also for those 5-6 that are willing to be “A GUY” on the team. It was also very impressive to see the turn out for setup … of 28 shooters, about 20 were there at 8am for the heavy lifting. This is extra impressive considering a cold starting temperature and several inches of snow in the berms.

All three ingredients (a leader, a motivated core team and an energetic, helpful populace) should prove to be a great foundation for another successful sport at CRC.

Setting a title might be good. Having a domain might be good; is Eastern Colorado IDPA the official name? I can start hunting up options if that's the case. Piggybacking on FRIDPA seems a bit presumptuous, so either asking Hoser for permission to ride or the board admins for a forum would also be good.

Eastern Colorado IDPA is the official name being submitted to the IDPA. It was requested by the designated match director to use ecoidpa.com for the domain which has been completed. Hoser has been contacted to request info about the forum as to it's intention of either serving the entire "Front Range" or specifically for the FRIDPA club.

Where do you see that FRIDPA's is in May? I'm curious and have considered emailing Mick to see if he has decided yet. I would really prefer that FRIDPA's Classifier be in April, weather permitting, since the RM300 would conflict. I'm already signed up for the RM300. I don't expect a change in date just because I can't make it, but if the date is still flexible, April would get my vote.
