I want to do the 24 hour Snipers CHallenge in New Mexico in July but need a partner for the event, preferably for the Precision/Long Range shooter. If you havent heard about this info can be found here http://competition-dynamics.com/ . So if you think you wouldnt mind a very long difficult hike in terrible terrain with some shooting along the way then lets talk!

Yes even with zero long range experience. If love to do it but with no experience, maybe next year if I had the time, $$$ and expertise to train up.

JM ver. 2.0 says that he'll do the challenge with you if he can use your guns - he doesn't have any. [LOL]

Damn... this sounds extremely fun... this is something I would like to try and do, but there are many required skills on this that I don't have... sh*t, I even get lost downtown.
I would like to think I can shoot, but I saw the "advance" endurance... man.. I only wish I could....

If I'm on leave at the time my .300 WM and I would gladly join you. Summer leave is general sometime in July.

Very cool, keep me in the loop! Have had some interest but no commitments as of yet, so still open.

Man I hope so. I have read pretty much everything that was written about last years event, and it sounds like a good time with a lot of tough terrain and conditions thrown in. Its beena very long time since I pushed myself much at all, so I am pretty determined to put this one in the books.

Physically I am about 20lbs overweight myself, and my endurance is not where it needs to be. I started training a few weeks ago and despite still being stiff the next morning the old body is responding well enough that barring injury or external intervention the endurance and strength will be where they need to be. My "day job" requires a specific mentality that quickly removes quitters, as a perfect day at the track can quickly turn into an all-night thrash, and no matter how tired, sore, hungry, hot, or cold you are you just cant quit or give up, because all the time, energy, and money spent to get you that far will be thrown away. I just never quit. I also ignore a lot of pain. In last Saturdays rimfire match I managed to stab a metal staple deep into my trigger finger at the second stage, ignored it shot the rest of the match.

I am also brutally honest with myself and everyone around me, so believe me when I say that I am not the guy who needs to be on the long-range gun. It has been literally 10 years since I shot out past 700 yards, and I have NEVER shot my current .308 out that far. It is possible that I could set up another gun and practice up and feel competent in time for the competition , but I already have a lot on my plate.

Last thing is it would be great to get a partner early so as to have some opportunity to train together and ensure there is the ability to work together.

Should set up some sort of try outs for this...

Here's my little resume:

I've shot out to a thousand yards on regular up at Pawnee with my .308.. farthest I've hit was about 1400 yards... and tried stretching it out to a mile, but ended up putting expensive holes on the ground.
Shooting inside 800 yards is not exactly a breeze but is a lot easier for me.

My endurance level is up there... but I don't have the endurance of a horse or semi-pro athlete. I am capable of staying on my feet for long periods and can carry sh*t around. I have a mind set of finishing what is started even though it takes longer than planned... it will be done.

I lack the navigation experience, field crafting, and the knowledge of'em sniping gadgetry (ballistic calculators, kestrals, etc..)...

I'm up for a try out if there would be any... Pawnee is a spot I do all/most of my shooting. Let me know... [Beer]

I warned him about boating on Dillon Reservoir, the wind makes for some choppy waters and it's real easy to have a horrible boating accident. [ROFL1]

I'm already booked with my teammate, but we'd be happy to have some discussion about training methods or even try to train or shoot together. I hope you find a team mate.

FYI they hung 7 or 8 , IIRC , IV bags last year , 2 of them on one of the stages I was running . There were a bunch of teams there totally out of their element . The biggest suggestion would be work on route selection , sometimes the shortest distance isn't the best choice . Also most teams carried way too much shit . Lastly take care of your feet and try out your new speed racer boots ahead of time .

The difference between 1st and 2 nd was 1 or 2 steel hits . The 2nd place team last year were not shooters but adventure racers , practice more than trigger pulling and be able to think on you feet when your wasted .

Oh , also only one guy that got stuck was pulled from the course . The rest had their bag pushed and went on about their business . The first guy was seeing grizzly bears that didn't exist . Expect to have to put out at a high level .

Stray thoughts;
Pack light.
I lost 8 lbs AFTER rehydrating.
The march to MCP1 last year was SO MUCH FUN.

If this is your first time out, shooting will not be your greatest challenge.

Yeap, already realized my current pack is too heavy and am searching out a replacement now

I completely believe that. In discussion with Tim K we figure that at the end of the event you could run as much as a 2000 or so calorie deficit, so spending some time remembering how to operate on nothing.

The march to MCP1 last year was SO MUCH FUN.
In my youth we had to carry water 1.5 miles from the showerhouse to campsite, in a very large cooler. I figure that cooler weighed 110lbs full up (80llbs of water, cooler probably 10, plus the 2x4's and harness we concocted so that two guys could carry it) every day. Builds character, especially in the rain, snow, and mud. Wish this was 20 years ago...

Already there. Racing means I am often functioning on little or no sleep, in a lot of heat or other bad weather, after working very hard in miserable conditions, and I forget or get too busy to eat very often. Also have done a lot of research into how and why we lose focus, like sleep deprivation and temperature extremes in figuring out how to keep the drivers alert and sharp during a race.

If this is your first time out, shooting will not be your greatest challenge.

Shooting should not be the challenge, but shooting with a high heart rate and fatigued muscles should be, and I am doing all I can (still need some input) to try and train with that in mind. As I said earlier, my endurance is not where it needs to be right now, but barring injury or external issues it will get there. When I was a younger person I did a fair amount of training along those lines, shooting after sleep deprivation, lack of nutrition, and just generally beating the snot out of myself. I still remember talking to a shrub for about 10 minutes thinking it was my teammate, explaining how we were going to move forward around the bend and take position under those trees.. and so on... and didnt realize it until I reached over to tap him on the shoulder and realized I was talking to a bush. Good times...

I'll definitely keep you posted on it, I'd love to do something like this.
As for my "resume"... we've gone to the field almost every day for the past few weeks preparing for EIB. A week and a half ago I partially tore my Achilles' tendon, and I've been keeping up with everybody else through the ruck marches, a few dozen miles worth of land nav, etc. and did well enough on the PT test testerday which included a 2 mile run (and a 2 mile jog there to take the test, and then back) to stay in the game. So my endurance is there. I haven't missed a single point on land nav, day or night, minus the ones I didn't bother to try finding, so if we have to find our points on this competition thing that's no problem. As for shooting, I haven't been able to let my .300 out to play for a while cause the terrain in NC is a bit restrictive... I can't find anywhere that I can shoot past 600m, it ain't like CO out here. You'll just have to trust me on that one.

This match is fairly straight forward and good fun. A great opportunity to get some sun and lots of trigger time. Everyone should give this a shot! The shooting aspect is much more important than the physical or land nav parts

This would be awesome to do, but I won't even kid myself at the moment that I could accomplish this (about 20-30lbs too heavy and I'm working on my calf to get back into running shape) but could you give a bullet list of fitness requirements? (ie be able to hike 30 miles in x hours). Just to get an idea of what it takes for the physical aspect.

I won't know for sure when the exact dates of leave are until a month or so prior. I wish I could give you a more solid answer than "sometime in or around July." I can almost guarantee that I'll be around for it but there's always that small chance with the Army, and I can't make a commitment to someone that I don't know for sure I can follow through on.
I guess the best I can do is, if your team mate for some reason can't make it I will gladly cover their cost and fill in for them.

ETA: Kestrel, the Army's standard is 12mi in 3 hours max, or no slower than 15min per mile, with a 45lb pack. Most people I know can do it in 2-2.5 hrs.

Well obviously they are not telling us anything more than they have to, but a few things can be deduced fairly easily. Last year in addition to heat, there was a lot of elevation change, 2000 feet on one stage. This year the event is in New Mexico so different terrain. A more arid environment, along with high temps, so hydration will be important. Rolling hills and brush, so footwear and clothing will be important. Looking like the equipment will weigh about 45-50lbs, depending on rifle and other details.
Physically, its a 30-ish mile hike in 24 hours, which in and of itself is challenging, with shooting while tired thrown in for good measure.
