So I've been watching a bunch of SEAL movies lately and was wondering what do you do will all that jump gear once on the ground? You surely don't carry it on your mission. That stuff must coast a bunch of money, do you just leave it behind?

from my understanding they cut the chute and the rest stays on them. Believe it or not.

Seems like a lot to be humping around.

The guys in the picture seem a bit underdressed for a jump from 30,000 feet. HALO is on my bucket list; is there any way to do something similar in the civilian world?

Pack it out. But that is all dependant on the situation. Leaving stuff behind that can tell people you were there is a bad plan.
Sometimes the stuff you jump with walks itself out... See pic below.

HALO does not mean 30,000 feet. Even jumping from 3,000 above the ground can be a HALO jump.
The pic in the first post is a training jump at Yuma. The below is a training jump elsewhere. That stuffed animal weighs about 70 lbs.

I'm not an expert, but it doesn't seem like "high altitude low opening" would gel with a 3k AGL. It would have to be in the 15k+ AGL range. You can jump at 3k AGL and do a low opening, but that doesn't make it a HALO jump.

Crazy stuff. Perhaps if I were younger.

Sure is. Just start skydiving. After 100 jumps you ought to have enough experience to jump with O2... this opens up some pretty sweet opportunities!

It might now be what **you** would consider high altitude, but the Military does. Higher is always better, but it does not always work out that way.
You get out with a freefall parachute, get stable and dump the parachute. Hop and pop.
Then there is HAHO...

HAHO would be fun... Personally, I enjoying flying under canopy the most.

Where you put a lot of skills to the test and cover lots and lots of miles! [Coffee] The ODA we supported did a HAHO in Germany for a training op, I think they said they jumped 12mi from the DZ... Crazy stuff- I'd love to have that job!

After almost 25 years of unpressurized high altitude stuff, nope. I avoid it at all costs.
Sucking on 100% oxygen sucks. Then the ear crackling for the next 12-18 hours is no fun either.
Two questions zoomie , how many people have you thrown outa the back and how many times did you follow ? Listen to the zoomie guarantee the picture of the trussed up beast came from his camera and the guy in the picture is wearing what looks like navy desert camo , a clue .
The decision to pack out or leave gear is METT-TC dependent. Obviously in training, the equipment is recovered if possible. In recent combat MFF (Military Free Fall) jumps, there is usually a follow on unit to the location and the chutes were recovered by them if possible. Leaving a $4K rig is a drop in the bucket compared to how much money is spent for any particular mission (think hundreds of millions). Any jump without a static line deploying the chute is considered a MFF jump, regardless of altitude. Even the staic line jumps from 8K feet were called static jumps even though they were under canopy almost the entire time. A hop & pop from 3K feet where you deploy your own chute is still considered a MFF. The classificatin is determined by equipment and parachute deployment method, not altitude. The difference between HALO and HAHO are determined by parachute deployment altitude, both being MFF jumps.

they should take all politicians on a HANO jump.
they should take all politicians on a HANO jump.
You would make a lot of money if you could make that happen and sell tickets..
Is there open betting on the number of bounces?
My BIL did this stuff in his younger years at very high altitude. Just hearing about the night-time HALO jumps he did made me pucker.
