That's NOAA's doing, not the politicians. They want to be more relevant, and by naming every storm system instead of just hurricanes/tropical storms, they get it done.

They are one-in-the-same. NOAA is a lot more about political policy than it is about true science. All you have to do is look at how they've adjusted historical temperature records to make the case for "Anthropogenic Global Warming".

Looks like the typical morning commute out there, except there's too much space between the vehicles.

After living out there for 2.5 years - and many significant storms, I can almost see where the .gov would need to step in. Sadly, most motorists out there have ZERO common sense (becoming increasingly commonplace here too). Once they clog up the roads and leave their vehicles sitting until the storm passes, it's a logistical nightmare to get them re-opened. Couple that with the fact that now emergency vehicles can't use the roadways to respond once the morons have the roads blocked.

Interesting word choice... and no, we're nothing like those east coast pussies (sorry to all you former east coast pussies [Coffee])- anyone remember '03? Evergreen saw 7.5' of that white stuff, but it didn't stop us, and we didn't need to declare a state of emergency and threaten people who drove with jail time. Fukin east coasters.

I only brought this up because I have family that had to go out there this weekend to deal with a pending loss. That's hard enough as is, but even harder when you risk jail time just going to see a loved one for the last time.

Even without that issue, I think it's utterly absurd that the government banned driving. I understand driving is not a right, but hey, the best solution to every problem is to ban things for everyone to prevent a few from making problems, right?

ADDED: And yes, that place has without a doubt has the WORST roads in the nation and the people must be some of the worst winter drivers...but IMO that still isn't a reason for an outright ban.

I guess there are people in this country that need the government to let them know what they should and shouldn't do. I on the other hand would look outside, say to myself, that is a lot of fucking snow and turn on the XBOX and plow my driveway every few hours. I guess its the same morons who think a firearm is too damn scary unless its the government....it is the nannie state after all.

How about some personal responsibility?

Instead of being a nanny, how about recommending that folks stay off the roads. You may be risking your life which you, and only you, are responsible for protecting. If your vehicle is abandoned on the roadway, you're taking responsibility for it. If your vehicle is on the roadway, it will be pushed off to the side with no consideration for minimizing damage to the vehicle.

They should remove the warning tags off of all consumer items. No circuit breakers on hair dryers. If you think it's a good idea to dry your hair in the tub, go for it. Let's cull the herd. Perhaps it would have a positive result on our elections.

Millions of guns have hurt nobody or have defended life...but lets get rid of them because a few criminals have used them to commit their crimes. Legislating or dictating based on the terms of the few that mess it up for the many is what got us here.

Not Agreeing with the ban but to play devil here...

People Don't Listen . When they get stuck they will call for help and risk first responders. IF first responders don;t respond. they will be in the media ( and likely court) explaining why not .. and losing more then likely.

As to just knocking the cars outta the way .... damages the plow and likely the roadway .

I figure that if they just recommend folks stay home .... maybe 40-50% listen ... if they ban it like they have .. 80% will listen .. and the only ones that will get the fine / jail will be the ones that didn't have proper equipment / skills to be on the roadway and they have to go save .. the ones that go out and make it back home safe will be left alone..

That's my guess anyways .

Fine, you're welcome to go out and do whatever you want. But don't expect any help from the government emergency rescue services when you get stuck in a snowbank and have no food or other provisions.

Chain up bitches.

I've been here since 92 and braved every storm we've had. Yea, those wimpy little back to back +40" storms too, and never had any trouble getting around with any decent 4x4 truck and AT tires - chained up for the deep stuff. I was the DD for running neighbors to the Grocery Store (what little there was) and hauling my wife's Nurses friends home (unofficially).

The fuz couldn't catch me if they wanted to.

What if someone doesn't own a TV or listen to the radio? "Ignorance of the law" surely cannot be applied for a temporary measure.

A day of wind over 70mph in Colorado doesn't make the news.
A day of wind over 70mph on the East Coast get's the "storm" a name and constant 24 hour news coverage, replete with the media telling folks there to "stock up and prepare for the worst". It's actually quite amusing.

The storm naming is the Weather Channel, not NOAA. NOAA is specifically distancing itself from it and has advised the NWS to NOT use the storm names.

Also, this can and has happened in Colorado. I remember all roads being closed in Colorado Springs after a major storm in 98ish.

We also close I-25 in bad weather. A friend of mine was trying to get home from Denver to Colorado Springs when I-25 was closed. He was following a snowplow and got ticketed and sent back.

Correct, it isn't uncommon for Colorado to close some sections of interstates or some state highways during big storms. Banning driving (in other words, ALL motorized travel EDIT: Maybe snow machines are OK...I don't know) all together statewide is an entirely different ballgame and IMO can't possibly be legal. But, those folks that live over there don't mind the government telling them what to do so that's their problem. But it becomes everyone's problem when that mentality spreads.

02-10-2013, 14:12
Again, I definitely the remember the City of Colorado Springs shutting down all travel after we got a particularly big storm. I think it was 98 but am not 100% certain on the year. It does happen and can happen here.

Don't know about statewide, but the state could certainly shut down all state and Interstate highways. Seems unlikely though - Colorado is big enough that the conditions differ across the state.
