Well, I took the gun class today- four hours of classroom training, and four hours range time. I got my certificate! Next step: CHP.

I am also sore as hell. :) Shotguns kick like an angry mule.

Hell ya I go to the range tomorrow for the second half of mine. I wish I would have gone with the guys on the board who hold classes though

Grats on the class, now the long wait for the CHP to be processed. On a side note, my first time with a shotgun was when a buddy of mine handed me his grandfather's breach action 10 gauge from the 1920's with a metal butt plate and a 3 1/2" mag #2 tungsten shot loaded and said "here, try this." Congrats! Douglas County Sheriff's office does a good job with the CHP.

Congrats! Is you CCW of choice a shotgun? Or just making it a full day at the range?

I don't see any contradiction there.

Congrats now while you wait for the CCW all you can do is train train and yep you guessed it train some more. I would recommend you looking into IDPA. It's a great way to get some real shooting done instead of paper punching.

I can't even imagine that. I'd never shot a shotgun before, so a 12GA was a real shock that almost knocked me on my ass. A metal butt plate whould have beat me black and blue. Apparently my stance was not quite what it could have been...

As to the other questions: the instructor tailored the class to a variety of weapons- rifle, shotgun and pistol safety. I've found that it's a catch-22; you want to have some familiarty with guns, but they're a big expense, so you'd better like the ones you buy. So a number of firearms were studied and fired at the range.

As to practice: HELL yeah. I can't quite describe the feeling I got while shooting. Watching some of the more skilled people made me realize that I'd started on quite a fantastic journey.

IDPA- thank you! That is excellent advice, and much appreciated. I will be looking into that.

Congrats Grey! +1 on what Mazin said, Idpa is a good traing tool. I would also recommend Defensive Pistol matches, they tend to be a little more relaxed and most ranges hold them. Also if you liked the shotgun may look a 3 gun.

Who did your class? It sounds like they did a good job. I had a tight schedule and took one of the $50 4 hour classes to meet my schedule. It was a huge disappointment. Story time and opinions with a very small sprinkle of useful info. I have a lot of shooting experience and qualified as an expert marksman in the military so I am very comfortable with guns. I took the course for Conceal carry info, laws, restrictions. It was a waist of time and as I looked around the room of everyone from grandmas and soccer moms, to dirty Harry wanabes i thought the huge majority could never pull the trigger and if they did then good luck. I am a strong believer in 2nd amendment rights but sitting in that class made me feel Conceal carry courses should be required to shoot, like yours did.

Hi Shredo. I'm delighted you asked. His name is Stason. My firearms instructor's website is here: http://overwatchcolorado.com/ He took a lot of time and explained things carefully, as well as asked us questions to see if we understood what he was teaching. He encouraged us to ask as many questions as we could.. Personally, I don't think he'd tolerate Dirty Harry wannabees. He's very keen on a person's mindset. He also will work with your schedule, and will not release a certificate without Live Range time. It makes me uneasy to think there are classes out there that have no live range time- how can you be certified to use something you've never tried? It's scary to know there are some people are walking around with the wrong attitude.

Congratulations Grey. Always happy to see another person ready to defend themselves (and maybe me!) from potential bad guys.
