Dear 82ndShooter,
Thank you for contacting me about 2nd Amendment rights and your views regarding my position towards gun violence prevention. I appreciate hearing from you on such an important issue because it enables me to better represent the beliefs and values of our district.
I believe in and value the 2nd Amendment and the rights of responsible gun owners, and we can protect these lawful rights and still work to ensure the safety of our kids and our communities. I am working with gun owners, community groups, families, and law enforcement to consider and act upon common sense solutions a majority of Coloradans and Americans support such as addressing mental health issues, and enacting criminal background checks on all gun purchases. Also, I am sponsoring a measure to stop future sales of military-style assault weapons and high capacity assault magazines like the ones used in the Aurora movie theater shooting. This measure closes loopholes which plagued the 1994 ban. This measure does not take from or limit the use of these weapons already owned by law abiding citizens. As a nation, we can uphold and protect our Constitutional rights under the 2nd Amendment AND take needed steps to make gun violence less easy, less frequent and less deadly.
Although we were unable to find common ground this time, I understand and am respectful of your strong beliefs on this topic. I look forward to working with you in the future on the many issues where we are in agreement
I still encourage you to continue to contact me about the issues that are important to you.
