About a year or two ago I picked up a SAR3. Thing has been very reliable, fun to shoot, dead nuts on out to 300 yards.

Butt ugly. I like wood, not the black that it came as. I just never got around to doing anything about it.

Well, the shop has been dead. Very dead. Every since I moved into the fixed location it has been dead. I currently have a 4700 sq ft game room so I can play on the computer. So I figured it was time to spend some time on the butt ugly SAR.

So I tore it down.

Stripped the wood.

Sanded it down a bit with some 220 grit.

And applied some Tung Oil.

Now I have 24 hours of letting it set and it gets another coat of the Tung Oil. I think I could have spent a bit more time on the buttstock though. It came out a bit dark. Some of the varnish from before the rattle can didn't get pulled out with the paint thinner. Ah well, it is supposed to be in the trash can so not a big deal.

Very nice! I was going to offer to swing by tomorrow and help out with that. Would've done it today, but I got called in for a gig downtown.

I could mosey back up that way for some pizza. Oh wait still have the in-laws. Only 24 more hours to keep myself from hurting someone!

OP said he likes wood!

I have been handling my wood for the last three days and I can say with great certainty that I prefer hard wood.

That looks classic![Beer]
Hardwood is so much eaisier to work with.
Now all you need is a leather sling to give it the right look ;)

I am actually toying with selling it. Not putting money into it.

Looks nice! I am toying with refinishing the underfolder I just picked up. Just the metal.

I decided not to sand the buttstock a second time. Just left it as is. Put another coat of Tung Oil on it and went with it. It isn't like the furniture is the best out there.

My sar 3's. The red one had the stock wood replaced with laminate. The other one has the stock wood with just a light refinish. Stock SAR 3's came with solid wood in the normal light yellow shellac finish. The one on the left was the wife's but she did not shoot it much so I sold it last year. Both of them had the ability to wipe a 200Y HP target prone. Both were bought new. $249 for the one on the left and $289 for the right one. Both were dated 2000 and within 300# of each other. 2160121603
