Range cleanup for brass...

I haven't contacted the Forest Service about this yet, does this sound like it would be a viable idea?

My thoughts are that brass is hard to come by these days for decent prices, and the BLM ranges are always trashed. Why not contact the Forest Service, see if they'd be willing to dispatch an officer for 5-6 hours to close the range down, and have a few of our guys come by to clean it up? This could be a monthly thing, and the benefit to us would be all the brass we could need. I'm completely broke, and not above scavenging. :-)

The only downside to this that I could see would be the proliferation of steel-cased stuff that everybody takes to the range, it might not be worth our time.

Seems logical. Throwing the steel in your own garbage would be a small price to pay for a bucket full of brass. Bring your pickups though because the amount of trash on the other end of the range is plentiful.

I love the idea for the basic principles of cleaning up the BLM so it doesn't get shut down.

I don't reload so I don't know the technicalities, but I have a feeling that of the actual brass you pickup, maybe 1/10th of it would be "fresh" and be able to be cleaned up, the other 90% would be so beat up/crushed/tarnished that it'd only be valuable as scrap?

I think it's a great idea (there have been cleaning days), but maybe just scavenge the spots where nobody is shooting at the moment?

No need to have them shut down. I visit certain National Forest shooting sites and "clean up" brass frequently....even if I was not there shooting. Anytime I drive by one of them I stop and if no one is shooting, I help myself.

Most of the brass is scavenged regularly at least in the places I shoot. It is almost a game to get it. The places I go, Buffalo Creek and Harris Park are cleaned often by several different crews as well as individuals. We usually just close the range without asking anybody. if somebody doesn't like it, tough shit, grab a bag and help.

Plenty of people do this at Pawnee already. I was talking to one of the rangers the other week and he said people will drive up, unload a bunch of kids, and let them go to town. They'll pick the range clean. Only downside for the BLM folk is that they don't pick up shotgun shells, which are the most trashy-looking.

I'd like to get in on this in NoCo. I don't reload...yet, but would like to start collecting brass, plus it's good for the environment and the image of shooters.

Better late than never? Great image, brass curves. I'd be willing to give 10% of my total pick up and any calibers I have no intention of reloading to anyone that would "show me the ropes" at choice spots in NoCo.
