View Full Version : Where do you keep your home defense weapon?

My gun safe is in my bedroom, but thinking about the time it takes get to it... I want quicker access. There are no children in our house. I keep my Glock 35 in the night stand but my wife likes the shotgun. I'm thinking about making some sort of hanger (out of bookshelf hangers?) to mount to the bed frame to keep the shotgun off the floor but under the skirt and slightly hidden?

Glock in the nightstand and shotgun in the closet. Really want to do something different with the shotgun though.

Nunya bidness haha But seriously, you could be creative and put one in different locations throughout your home.

Nightstand or on my person. I don't keep any long guns in the bedroom.

Funny you should ask as I set up my safe this weekend.
I keep the safe in the bedroom which takes the place of my night stand. When I come home, I drop my keys and wallet in a bowl and then unlock the safe. I keep my PDW AR-15 and HD shotgun in the front rows. When I leave for the day, I grab my stuff and lock the safe.
I keep a Ruger LCP hidden elsewhere in the house and generally grab that when I'm going to walk the dog quick around the neighborhood but it also gives me a quick access if someone tries to push through the front door and getting the bedroom isn't the best option. (I mention pushing through the front door because an armed intruder did that two blocks from my house a few weeks ago and I thought I lived in a 'good' neighborhood.)

I like the safe in the bedroom as I feel that most home intrusions happen while people are away at work or in the middle of night (but obviously I have to rethink that with the above incident).

Both my wife and I CCW (but I work for .mil so I can't carry while at work) and we have no kids and don't have friends.

Seriously? Thanks for the replies that answered the topic. No one forced you to open this thread. If you're so paranoid you think I'm some how going to track down your address and target you because "now I know where your guns are!" Maybe you need to relax a little bit and have a beer.... or move to a safer neighborhood. I'm well aware of violent crime... spent 27 years in the great <sarcasm> city of Chicago where I was robbed 4 times both at gun and knife point. This is a thread about sharing ideas and what works for you. DavieD55, that is exactly what I was looking to make, but underneath the bed skirt. My wife sleeps on the side of the bed that faces the wall, so even if it was exposed like that there is no reason anyone other than us should see it.

I have a 2.5yr old son, a ninja master could not get through the house in the middle of the night in the minefield he leaves without waking half the town or breaking an ankle. Plenty of time to open the safe, choose a weapon, have coffee, read the paper, and oh yeah, shoot bad guy.

I can't think of what they're called, but that's a commercial product made to fit between the mattress and box springs, and hang a shotgun on. Then the comforter covers it up. Basically flat steel straps with hanger hooks on the ends, connected together with another strap across the back, and coated with something to not scratch your gun. A guy could make something similar very easily.

Found it - called The Back Up. They make them for pistols too. My wife would shit down both legs if I put one on our bed. But she lives in a Condition White world.

I have a 70lb pitbull... you could probably smash a semi through the front door and he would sleep through it [LOL]Great for intimidation, but more bark then bite.

I'll just say this- My 12GA is within reach at night, my AK is within reach at night, my EDC (Sig P229 9mm) is no further from reach than the snooze button on my alarm clock, and my Glock is in a drawer in my nightstand... My house is safe (especially since my brother has a Nighthawk Custom GRP 1911 on his nightstand).

I bought one and like it pretty well. I like that it is hidden by the bedspread. Usually a AR by the headboard when I sleep, couple handguns in the night stand. People can do bad things to you when you are sleeping, so can politicians.

Kraven251

My brother had a setup where he had mounted his AR behind the headboard which I have been thinking about doing. He modified a truck rack and it worked pretty well.

The other thought I had was about putting a set of drawers under the bed to hold a rifle. I like shotguns, but I would rather have the AR in the bedroom, the wife knows how to use it, is effective with it, and isn't afraid of the recoil.

There were a couple guys at Tanner a few months ago selling a thing that pushed under the mattress and came up the side of the bed with a "dowel" that the barrel of the pistol slides on to keep a pistol tucked tight against the mattress.

I didn't buy one at the show, and thought about it and was going to buy one at the next show, but they haven't been back. I tried making something similar myself and it didn't come out very good.

so for now, a pistol grip mossy 500 sits behind a bedpost

For those that keep a gun in the house, and their house/apartment/Etc. is a wood framed house with sheetrock walls: Please, buy a couple of 2x4's, a piece of sheetrock, and some insulation and build a wall that imitates what you have between rooms or separating you from your neighbors. What you read on the internet or hear in gun shops does not always equal reality. Most ammo will go FAR further through walls made of sheetrock than what gets passed off as fact on gun forums. Test it for yourself.

Mine are all collocated together in a locked safe. It is my goal as a true American to keep them locked up at all times and out of the reach of those that may wish to do me or others harm. We must after all follow the lead from our appointed officials who know what is in our best interest. You folks need to get on board and stop bucking the system if you want the bloody out of hand gun violence to stop.

One step further for me -- all of mine are collocated in a supervised and secure government facility where I can request them to be released to me (after a 10 day waiting period to ensure I'm not hot and bothered or have active warrants) for occasional trips to the range. At home I just have magazines with pictures of guns and can sleep at night knowing my family is safe from intruders who might use my weapons against me or others.

Not to hijack, but speaking of dogs....my brother made this when he got his puppy, Riley. Sweetest puppy ever. But something went wrong during his obedience training, the trainer traumatized him somehow, and this dog will fuck you up now! He turned into the meanest, human-hating sumbitch I've ever seen. If he doesn't know you, and know you well, he WILL rip you to shreds. And he's HUGE!

My poor brother is brokenhearted, he didn't want a mean dog, and he has to worry constantly about Riley getting loose and hurting someone, and causing a gigantic lawsuit. They can't even have visitors over without locking him into a very strong room. Pretty sad. Woe be unto he that breaks into my brother's house, Dave don't need to keep any guns handy.

Now, back to the shotgun holders.....

My wife made these fancy cloth valences to hang over all the doors in the house. I have taken truck racks aand hidden them behind the valence. An 870 and two 20 ga coach guns hang at strategic locations. After 3 years only one has been noticed. Pistols on night stands.

Early warning, 50 lb Heeler with 200 lb attitude. He will not allow anyone to hassle my wife inside the house. If we get into arguement dog has to go outside or get shut in bedroom. If I raise my voice to the wife he will growl at me. Sometimes he forgets, I sign the checks and he works for me.

Sounds like a great dog!

Between my dog, a basic security system hooked up to a LOUD siren, and the gun I always have on me, I feel pretty safe around the house, especially at night.

Shotguns are usually left standing up in the closet or behind the bedroom door. You could even mount it in the wall. If you want to keep it under the bed, a folded over Army blanket will keep the dust off it and provide instant access.

Guns? I keep my lightsaber on my nightstand.[LS] Not as clumsy or random as a blaster, an elegant weapon, from a more civilized age.

Can't keep guns outside the safe, one mention of a loaded gun outside the safe to her kids' dad and child services would be all over our house. Kind of odd how anti gun he is considering he was a Navy MP.

I have a couple compound bows in a wall rack in the bedroom. The neighbors complain when I make too much noise. My early alarm system is a basset hound that sleeps across the floor where ever you want to go. After you trip over her she glares at you and then moves to the next spot to set up for the next person.

I have several sprinkled around the house.
Mostly under book shelf shelves and underside of tables. I made some u-shaped straps out of aluminum sheeting and screwed them up under the shelves, below eye level.
The handguns slip into these retainers. We have very few youngsters in the house, if that happens I put them up on the top closet shelf.

Reminds me of a moot court. A couple of hijackers (this was before the term 'terrorists' became so fashionable) got into the cockpit of an in-flight 707. They were making demands and the speechless pilot stood up, looked the gunman right in the eye and...threw up right in his face. The crew regained control of the aircraft.
