bipod's and distant shooting

I did a search and didn't really see much info on them.

I am thinking of doing some long(er) range shooting with the AR. Out to around 300yrs, and eventually work out further. I have nice Vangaurd Equalizer bi-pod on my .308 long rifle and enjoy it, but my question for the long ranger shooter:

What is a decent bi-pod to use with the AR-15 platform? And what are the Pro's and Con's of having a Bipod?

Harris bipods are well regarded. I own a few and like them. Get the tilting version and put a pod-lock on it. Depending on your fore end, you might need extra hardware to get it attached.

There are no cons to bipod use except cost and weight. You don't say at what size target you will be shooting, but assuming a full size sillouhette, hits at 600 are trivially easy with a bipod and a decent rifle assuming steady wind.

Harris tilting bi-pods are good, but heavy.

Atlas are much lighter, they pivot and pan, but not spring loaded like the Harris and they wont attach to a swivel stud.

I have a couple Harris bi-pods laying around, but pretty much just use Atlas anymore.

I have the Vanguard equilizer that does 3 axis pivot/turning, which is very nice. I have used only the bi-pod and prone out to 300 to take out bambie without a problem.

I would love to have a smaller bench bi-pod for the 6.8 that could reach out to 500 if possible.

For target size... I used the 6 or 8 inch splatter targets. I want to start to get into long range shooting. I sight in my hunting rifle to 250 right now, but would love to hit 6" @500, and then ring the gong at 1000 eventually.

I love my bi-pods and will never give them up.

The Atlas is not worth it in my opinion. Stick with Harris.

I have a 6-9" harris bipod and it's functional and sturdy, but a bit expensive. I also have a $20 (Winchster?) bipod from walmart and it seems to function just as well. The Harris is definitely stronger and a little bit more solid. I prefer the Harris when shooting long, but the furthest I've ever shot was 450yds.

Obviously I either need special hardward to go from rail to sling pin(swivel stud - or what ever it's called), or are there any bi-pods that attach right to rail?

I have a set of shooting bags, but didn't know how they would work with the longer Magazines

I think Harris with have the highest following, but others are out there and normally have higher prices; Atlas ext... I run Harris both in 6-9 and 9-13 with and without the swivel option. I think the biggest thing with using a bipod is in bench and prone is using a rear squeeze bag. I would take 2 squeeze bags and some 550 cord over a bipod any day, but having bags, bipod and cord is the best. If you know how to use them you can support in just about any weird or off position.

Bolt guns normally get 6-9" and my AR15's get the 9-13". Really depends on what your going to be doing with the rifle as well.

Use the cord to get it wrapped around the bipod or other part of the rifle to sink in and reduce the wobble.
