I've read through all of the shipping policies from the carries and it seems like UPS might be my best bet.

Anyone done it recently? FedEx told me to f myself and USPS is a big no on handguns.

I'm shipping it back to Ohio so I can use it while there but my itinerary doesn't have me coming straight back here so I can't fly with it.

Hmmm. I've shipped handguns through FedEx before with no problems.

5 years ago I used UPS to ship a handgun to myself. I shipped it from CO to Alaska. I was required to ship over night. The ATF website had some good info on this and specifically showed that this was legal. I printed out the ATF stuff and the UPS policy pages and took it with me when I went to the UPS facility to ship. I did have to show this info to the UPS person before they agreed to help me!

From your description, I believe this is allowed, but that was my experience 5 years ago. Check the ATF site and be prepared to help "educate" the UPS or FedEx workers.

You going through a 'forbidden' state on the way back?

Pretty sure any FedEx or UPS distribution hub drop-off or company owned store is required. The franchise and many in-store counters won't accept them.

UPS has stopped doing this about 3 years ago. Your best bet would be to go ask but you might be disappointed. The girls that our hub used to have were great and knew the rules. I never had an issue but the last time I did it she looked at me and said "you know we are not supposed to do this anymore" She shipped it but it was a big no-no trying to send it back from Portland.

An employee of FedEx tried to ship a gun undeclared, it was wither picked up by an x-ray machine or a a dog. He was terminated by FedEx and fined and charges were pressed by the ATF. I don't know any more than that. He may have tried to ship it in a state that didn't allow the particular gun or for trafficking firearms, again I am not sure.
Not worth the risk to me. However, FedEx and UPS are some of the biggest drug traffickers in the US due to the chances of them not catching all of the packages shipped in a short amount of time. Some wild stuff gets through these companies.

With FedEx, you need to expressly tell them there is a gun in the package (not sure if that is their rules or ATF rules). I shipped a pistol a week ago w/FedEx and clearly told them there was a pistol in the box and there were no troubles.

Thanks, I've read that only certain fedex locations accept firearms. Just wanted a confirmation on one that has already worked for somebody.

The closest ones ARE not IS, I swear I went to school.....

Anyways either one of those are Express/Overnight Stations that will ship a firearm. Make sure it is fully packaged and ready to go.

I've shipped a polymer pistol to myself in NC from FedEx in Boulder, on at least one occasion. I simply field stripped it first, and wrapped each piece in cloth, then put them all in the box... no ammo was included, which is obviously an important variable, but I didn't have any trouble with FedEx.

I'v shipped to myself with FedEX and no problem, they could care less about motorcycle parts. Just kidding, I have had no issues, even to CA.

Was it declared as a firearm? Not wanting to be a nimby, just curious.

I honestly don't recall, but knowing my tendency to err toward privacy, I doubt it.

I think the other safeguard, which will cost you more money, is to disassemble it and ship it in two parcels. Then you are shipping parts and not a gun.

Anytime you ship the serialized receiver of a firearm it is considered a "gun".
