Anyone know of a source for affordable 3/8"-1/2" AP-500 steel plate ? I need to make some more targets for my range, plus im working on a design for a self resetting rifle target. Just need to be able to get 8-10" round plates so used scrap would work.

Thanks for any help
Mike

Mike,

I made a bunch of targets some years ago and used an alloy of steel that was made for earth moving equipment. The properties were almost exactly the same as AP steel, but it was much less expensive since it wasn't rated as AP. I've forgotten the precise designation, but a little research at Ryserson steel would probably yield the answer.

If you can find an old, scrap bucket to a front end loader or something, I'll just bet the steel in it is just what you want.

DenCol steel sells it. No scrap that I know of tho and its pretty pricey.

send hoser a PM he buys alot of AP steel. I would say just spend the money on the AP500 if you plan on shooting it a bunch.

he is in some far flung place fighting fires right now. I am sure he will get back to you as some as he gets near an internet connection.

DenCol has an awesome scrap section to pick through.. I've bought lots of iron/steel from them in the past..

I keep thinking about them as I pass by on I-70, but it's always on a day or time that they're not open.
