View Full Version : Daughter Follow Up
Earlier this week I asked for help for places to take my Daughter shooting and received a ton of great advice and wanted to share how it went. I ended up taking both of my girls to Left Hand Canyon and I lucked out and we had the place to ourselves for almost 2 hours. My Dad and I set up 3 target stands on the hillside and placed 20 or so clays all over. They started on 22's, but it didnt take long before they wanted to try other calibers. My oldest, who was intimidated by the "looks" of a HK MP5-A5 ended up absolutely thrilled by it and loved the instant feedback of blowing up clays(she got pretty proficient at it). My youngest got a kick out of the larger caliber handguns, especially after she hit bullseye with a 357 from about 15 ft away, she ended up shooting 9mm most of the morning. It was a lot of fun for everyone, and they both want to do it again. I got to impart some really good safety rules and drive them home repeatedly with examples of why they were crucial and I think they both have a better understanding of where I am at with guns and shooting. I am not scary or reckless and the guns arent either, they both have a basic understanding of how guns operate, the respect necessary of that, and the fact that they can be a shit load of FUN. It went far better than I hoped and I posted a couple of pics for the first time here that I hope show up below. Thanks again to everyone for your advice and support.

Sounds like a great day!
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent! Good Daddy! Now teach the girl with the MP5 to lean into it a little more, and it'll be even easier and more fun.

I thought the same thing... Lean into it! I know it is only a .22lr, but it's good to start early.

Lefthand looks like a garbage dump. So sad.
Sounds like a good time was had by all. It is nice when you transition from you having to ask them if they want to shoot, to them asking you to take them shooting [Beer]
Well done Steve. Glad u and ur girls had a good time.

Sounds like a good time! I was going to suggest Left hand put that place get's so packed with people. I didn't want to suggest it, it be busy and then your day was ruined! Glad it wasn't and you had a good time........
It was close and the price was right so we tried it out, I think it being a weekday morning and the weather helped. We left around noon after a couple of twosomes showed up. The trash was the biggest bummer and we packed up our target stands (large boxes) to avoid them ending up in the trash pile, I'll re-use them next time. Her form got better with some instruction but by then I was playing too and the camera was forgotten. Vossman knows a little how bad I am when I get geeked out...lol, sorry vm.

Good job Steve. It just takes an open mind and someone willing to teach them right to change folks minds from anti to pro.

Agreed. It looks horrible. Steve, I hope you showed them how to responsibly clean up after yourself and expressed your disgust in the condition of the site. That can make a big difference in people's opinions of shooters too.

Awesome news. On a side note - what a bummer about all the trash.
Perfect, now, on to some matches. :)

I was going to make a comment on that also. I think my next shoot will be up there and a rake and some trash bags will be with me.
Looks like a fun time. Lefthand is best when it is empty.

Thanks for the followup, and the pics.
Great to hear they had a good time.
PS. earplugs?
Reading this makes me smile as I have a 23 month old son and a new born baby girl. I can't wait to teach them how to shoot
