Hickenlooper unable to join Gardner on Magpul tour Thursday

Posted on: 6:10 pm, February 20, 2013, by Eli Stokols (http://kdvr.com/author/kdvrelistokols/), updated on: 09:09am, February 21, 2013

DENVER — Early Thursday morning, GOP Congressman Cory Gardner toured Magpul Industries, the Erie manufacturer of high-capacity magazines that’s threatening to leave Colorado should legislation banning magazines of more than 15 rounds become law.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who Gardner’s office invited on the tour Wednesday, was out of the state and unable to come along.

Magpul, which employes 400 people, is a $400 million business that primarily manufactures accessories for the AR-15 and M-16 assault rifles for private use and defense contracts.

House Bill 1224, the ban on magazines of more than 15 rounds, passed (http://kdvr.com/2013/02/18/house-passes-universal-background-checks-ammo-limit-mesaures/) out of the House on Monday with an amendment specifically for Magpul that will enable ammunition manufacturers to continue making high-capacity magazines in Colorado for sale in other states.

On Twitter, Gardner announced that he’d invited Hickenlooper on a tour “so we can learn about the unintended consequences of gun control leg[islation].”

Hickenlooper told (http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_22592143/colorado-governor-hickenlooper-says-he-is-ok-gun-magazine-limits) reporters last week that he supports the high-capacity magazine ban; but, during a panel discussion about gun restrictions Tuesday night, the governor appeared to waffle on the matter.

“We haven’t taken a position on that bill yet,” Hickenlooper said. “But I from time to time have said contradictory things on it.

“It’s a tough issue: I mean, how many lives do you save, and how real is the inconvenience to the people who want to have a larger capacity magazine and feel it’s essential for defending their house?”

Hickenlooper’s spokesman Eric Brown told FOX31 Denver Wednesday afternoon that he was unaware of any official invitation being extended from Gardner.

Gardner’s spokeswoman, Rachel George, told FOX31 Denver Thursday morning that their district director had spoken with Alan Salazar, Hickenlooper’s Chief Strategy Officer, on Wednesday before sending out a press release announcing the tour, which was planned at the last minute on Wednesday.

Hickenlooper’s former legislative lobbyist, R.D. Sewald, who left the administration last year to start his own private lobbying firm, now represents Magpul.

With the legislation likely to pass the Democrat-controlled state Senate, Magpul’s only chance to prevent it from becoming law appears to be a veto from the governor.

Already, Republican politicians in other states, including South Carolina and Texas, are appealing to Magpul and asking the company to bring its business there.

Toe the line. He is the party line with sights set on a potential senate bid if not bigger come 2016. A signature for tougher gun laws / bans etc will give him a major rep with dems nation wide.

PREDICTION HERE so remember who said it. (ME)
I believe Bloomberg will be heavily involved either for himself or a "Name" in an 16' presidential bid. The candidate? none other than Gov Johnny. A good VP pick.

His career is being fast tracked. The aw shucks, funny election campaign commercials, former (ahem) owner of the first? trendy brew pub. Hipster and middle age voter appeal. Wife wrote such an appealing book about "hispanics" fitting in to our education system. All he needs is for some one to come out and say they had a homosexual tryst / relationship with him AND he's be elected by a landslide. few pics of him toking up would be a lock.

He used to be a small business owner and entrepreneurial. Then the DNC in 2007 he came up on the spotlight. Its unfortunate, he has gone more to the big government side as opposed to the free market. Oh how the state has changed.

We need a Libertarian candidate that loves guns, weed, and is gay. That'll teach those stupid democrats!

It would be great to see him veto it, but his words are full of bullshit. just enough to make you think he would consider veto, but in all reality, he knows Magpul is already working on securing a location and he doesn't give a shit about the citizens of the state, he wants bigger things. Bloomberg, Obama, Biden....all probably talking to him in front and behind the scenes letting him know he is set.

I don't think he'll veto it. These folks take to each other on the side. If all of this goes away with no significant law being passed it will involve some sort of face saving excuse. They'll blame the NRA of the "gun lobby" or whatever, doesn't matter; I'll take the victory.

We might be having an effect. Magpul leaving might be having an effect. The fact that manufactures are taking a stand might be having an effect. Even NY going too far could be helping. This isn't going as well for them as they first thought. Some dems were against it from the get-go and they need them all. Maybe they thought this was a slam dunk from the beginning but it's turning into a minefield with unexpected resistance. Keep up the pressure. It might just be working.

/cautious optimism.

Adams County Sheriff website, in the ccw section, says that it is a class 6 felony to carry a gun onto a college campus. Seems like they already know how that particular bill will be voted on...

Jim, has it squared up. Chickenlooper, is being groomed by the VP and the DNC as we speak. He HAS to sign the bills we have been protesting or else his career is over.

Based on the reply I received from Sen. Mary Hodge, she is not waffling. She will vote for all these unconstitutional measures.

I believe a case can be clearly made that at least two of these bills are clearly unconstitutional. Sure all four of them have been tried and are already destined to fail, but we can't focus on that. We need to continue to pressure members of the state senate that we are neither legal or moral or effective measures. However, we also need to be mounting a court battle and let it be known we are ready to take the fight to the next level.

I think you are right. We need more recalls in motion to show them we need business. Maybe with their job security at stake they will get the idea

Can the governor be recalled?

You don't remember Governor Rick Scott in Michigan? The Unions tried to pull a recall on him and he won anyway. Same thing could be done here. California has done it several times too. It can be done, and it can be won.

?

Bill automatically becomes law if the gov doesn't sign it/abstain for 10 days during session or 30 days out of session. That's why the CO Senate is the best place to defeat these bills.

...or just haven't updated their website after the last time this was debated and CCW on CSU and CU was upheld.

Remember, the people at ACSO are busy processing all of those CCW applications at the blindingly fast rate of "20 per week".
I can't see them having ANY time to update their website with accurate and up-to-date information.

The new bill would only cover campus buildings and not the campus itself.

Anyone who thought he was a "reasonable" Democrat and not anti-gun and voted for him is an idiot. He hasn't waffled or changed his views. This is who he is, just like all the other Democrats. STOP PUTTING THEM IN OFFICE!!! This is what they have always believed in, they just needed an excuse or "crisis" to let their views out in the open.
