Anyone here have the ability to run a carfax for a vin by chance? I know it is a long shot but figured I would try.

2007 Dodge Caliber? Meh. I wouldn't. But then I am not a fan of the Dodge or the Caliber.

carfaux is a joke.
my salvaged Blazer is proof.

remember, it only reports to you what is reported to them.
and nothing is reported to them doesn't mean it didn't take swimming lessons after being stolen and get a junkyard engine.

It's only good if the vehicle has any claims on it.It wont tell you much otherwise.
Same thing with running the vin with the dealerships.Just tells you what waranty repairs and recalls have been done..

My old Tacoma was wrecked a minimum of 3 times and nothing appeared on Carfax.

I always wondered what the allure of Carfax was. Looks like my question has been answered. [bulls]

We did a focus group of buyers and non buyers from our group in December and the overwhelming number of them said they put no faith in Carfax.

Yet every person who walks through the door asks for it. People are conditioned to take it as gospel.

All good points!

Member ran one for this morning. Is it all there, maybe not. It did give me more information than a perviously had.

Still always takes a good visual inspection. As a body man my whole life, always always check jambs for tape lines from paint. Best indicator of an accident!

I'm just looking for a POS to bomb around anyway. And as mentioned above, people swear by Carfax. Could be a leverage point in making a deal.

Get a pre purchase inspection, they cost so much less then a post purchase inspection.

I have made people cry after they bought a vehicle and had me look at it. One that stands out was a old Bronco II that they had bought a week prior for 2500. I found 3K worth of work 2K of which was safety related.

Oh boy! Having rented a few nothing like having a slipper clutch Kart to drive. [LOL]

Contact your local PD. If someone runs a potential "stolen" vehicle and it bounces HOT. The person running it better have answers.

^^This^^

Peace of mind cost more than paying a tech for a safety check, PRIOR to buying.

Because the dealer will provide it for free, and there is the off chance that something shows up.
I agree - worthless - but if I buy anything but certified used or new, I want it as well. And not on my dime. :)

The software in my shop now reports to carfax. Meh. I could stop it but I really have no issues either way with it.

Carfax came up clean on my F250. Found out LATER that it looks like it was repo'd and got a whole new paint job for some reason. I no longer trust Carfax.

I tried the NICB link but it looks like those are car vins only (or at least my two previously stolen bikes' vins came up clean). Every other "free" website I tried to check said "yup we know the make model from your vin pay is $$ for the complete report!!"
