I got this today in a trade and cant find any marking on it other than a serial number that is pictured below. it is super heavy chambered in .308 with a nice stock but again no clues as to who made it or what model it is.

I'm hoping some one here will recognize it and help me figure out what i have here.

Thanks for the help!!

Mazin thanks been looking in to that but can't find a list of savage serial numbers to see of this fits in some where. Kind of looks like their format for a SN.

I'm guessing its not a Savage based on the safety.

Maybe a marking on the receiver under one of those rails. But that's one HELL of a barrel! Nice looking beastie too, I'd give a good workout and get to know it.

What does the top of the base say?

1950's vintage Weatherby is my guess, obviously somebody rebarrelled it.

That's kinda where I'm at, the only thing that leads me to that is the bolt.

I'd pop the stock off and see what the rest of the action looks like.

I was thinking it might be a marlin, but I am having a hell of a time finding older pictures of their bolt guns. Has more to do with the safety, the bolt and the sweep on the front of the stock, but I can't verify it.

Pull the bolt and post a pic. That may be telling.

Judging by the stock, looks like a Weatherby. But defiantly take the scope rail off. Also take the stock off and look for markings on the bottom of the barrel.

Why is that one piece scope rail cut?

Good catch ray, I was thinking weatherby because of the stock but said savage.

Pretty sure the only things that are original on that rifle, is the receiver and the bolt. I will bet that the barrel and stock were both made around that action. Have fun figuring out what it is. Take off that shitty aftermarket mount on top of the action also.

For real it looks so haggard

Take off that shitty aftermarket mount on top of the action also. actually its a Badger ordnance rail. They are good quality. Someone had an old action that nobody makes a picatinny rail that has built in elevation for. So they destroyed it, by cutting, grinding and or hacking it, to make it fit. It needs to go. or if its actually stable pull it off and clean it up.

i would say its a savage.

" Any serial number starting with a letter will have been made after January 1, 1969. Savage implemented the letter prefix on their serial numbers to designate guns made after the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 took effect.

Prefix letters A to F498820 will span the years of 1969 to October 31, 1995.

Serial numbers higher than F498821 were made after November 1, 1995 under the current Savage ownership and are eligible for factory repair/warranty work."

Well i had a guy look into it and take it a part. Turns out it is a Howa action from 1993 outside of the range or serial numbers affected by bolt issues. The barrel is a Kieger profile #13 2 inch diameter throughout chambered in .308 unsure on the stock either Howa or Weatherby nicely done to accommodate the HUGE barrel.

Thanks for helping!
