View Full Version : Glock 9mm - Night sights vs. Light, and which one

I have at least one Glock 9mm pistol and would like to either put night sights on it or a light.
1) Which would you recommend? Night Sights or a Light?
2) What brand and model do you recommend?

I would recommend both, but if you are on a budget, night sights. When shooting low light the muzzle flash will give you enough of a outline for you sights. Sights are what you prefer either a 2 lamp or 3 lamp system. Surefire lights all the way.

Front night sight and a flashlight would work well for night shooting as it will give you the most options.
My carry pistols are all front night sights and I use a handheld light.

My bedside (and EDC) gun is my Glock 23, and I keep my EDC flashlight (Fenix LD10) next to the gun too. I am planning (if I stop buying reloading gear or other crap) on getting a pair of Ameriglo night sights, yellow rear and green front. That way, you are lined up with yellow green yellow, whereas if you have all 3 green dots, you could have the gun angled and in the heat of the moment, not notice and completely miss. Probably works better in theory but I've never been involved in a nighttime shootout, so what do I know. lol
On that note, I do plan eventually to get a Streamlight TLR-1 (or whatever that $99 model is) and keep that mounted on the gun, and have the option of having the handheld flashlight as well.

In my opinion the two are apples to oranges. Night sights allow you to identify your sights in low light, a pistol mounted light allows you to identify your target. I think you'd be better served with night sights and a handheld light.
Go with night sights first and a handheld flashlight. You don't need to point your firearm at everything that goes bump in the night.

I've got tons of pics. Would you prefer lolcats or Astronomy Pictures of the Day?

Weapons mounted light.
A simple technique is to splash the floor which will illuminate your target enough for positive ID without inadvertently muzzling something that doesnt need to be shot.

...unless you're upstairs and the unknown is downstairs (as most homes in Colorado are multi level). Then you've illuminated yourself and not identified the unknown. Handhelds work for almost every situation and are less confusing for the shooter to use under stress; not to mention less expensive, can be used by others present (even kids) and still work if you change/forget/drop weapons. Also, light draws fire...

Yup, I never understood the allure of a weapon mounted light. If your mark is armed what would they use as an aiming point?
The light.
I feel you have more options with separate light/weapon.

This. If you want to take another step, add a weapon mounted light. If you train and know how to use them, they are very effective.
I would (and did) replace my stock G19 sights with night sights first, then I purchased a surefire x300. Stock Glock sights are crap (my opinion) and should be the first upgrade to a HD handgun.

Mine is close to this. G30 with yellow rear, green front (ameriglos) next to an Olight m20s-x

Spend the money on good tritium night sights. You can get a decent rear activated hand held flashlight for about $11 at wally world.
Personally, I've found turning on the light switch to be the easiest way to see what's going on. It's worked in every situation I've arrested someone, why not in your house. Cheap ass lamps left on at night to illuminate areas of your house so you aren't fumbling around is the smartest IMO.

I plan on getting Ameriglo Pro Operators, they are just like the Operators but don't have the white outline around the tritium vials. I had some trijicon night sights on my old G22 and didn't like the white outlines, hence my reason for the Pro Operators. I believe southernpolicesupply.com still has them in-stock for around $112 shipped. Only place I have ever found that keeps them stocked.

Do you like the yellow rears more? I am only thinking of this in theory and haven't seen a pair of yellow in person. But pretty sure I'd like it because its better than what I've got at the moment. And frankly, I hate the U notch Glock factory sight.

Simplest solution yet, and you bring up a very good point about a home invasion. Control your environment. Thats similar to leaving your doors unlocked but knowing that because you're a member of SWAT (or ex-special forces or whatever you dream about), you won't have a problem if someone breaks into your home.
We leave lights on in our kitchen, but nothing in between the kitchen and our bedroom. Might have to start leaving a small lamp on to help illuminate the other dark corners.
Yeah, I like mine, very easy to pick up with the different colors. The yellow is slightly dimmer, so it helps me out with the sight picture. I have the outline on the front, and no outline in the rear.

Ameriglo, warren, Trijicon, warne, do a search for "glock night sights". Plan to spend $100-$160, Bowers Tactical normally has some in stock. Like I said, I like the 2 lamp system. It lines up your night sights vertically. There are also 3 lamp systems, these line up 3 dots horizontally. I prefer the 2 lamp, because I you line up the 3 dot, you will tend to shoot a little high.

I've been a huge fan of the Warren Tactical sights. I put them on everything. Plain rear with a front night sight is the ticket.

Take a short drive over to Bowers and talk to them. They usually have a large selection of Ameriglo sights in stock (which is my preference), and will install for free, if you purchase from them.

Ameriglos on my Glock 26
Dwason front night sights for Glocks are $49: http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000C9A-1278686054
Skip the rear, and especailly don't do different colors. If you must have a rear night sight, the Heinie straight 8 style is the one to go to.

light. Target identification is more important than being able to get a good sight picture in the dark.
JMHO
Heinie, Warren Tactical, Dawson Precision are all good metal sights. As mentioned before, run a tritium in the front at a minimum. Whether or not you like vertical allignment or horizontal dot alignment is personal preference. I personlly shoot slower having to make sure one color is in between another 2 different color dots so I run a plain rear sight or the Heinie Straight 8s. Whether you are shooting in daytime, low light, or no light situations you need to ALWAYS have a clear sight picture as well as target identification. Weapon mounted lights require a little more training and are specifiic in their use. Upgrade your sight's first(approximately $100) then you can always go to a weapon mounted light like a TLR or Surefire afterwards ($200-300). Either way, practice with your set up in low light conditions as well as practice your home defense plan.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!!! I just ordered some Ameriglo Hack sights GL-433. If anyone has a sight pusher, I'd love to borrow it.
