View Full Version : primers and powder - best place to get them?

I have figured out that the hazmat fees for shipping primers and powder pretty much negates any savings unless you buy a LOT of them, which I cannot afford at one time. I need to buy in small increments, like 1000 or 2 of primers and a pound or 8 of a particular powder.

So, is Sportsmans Warehouse or a gun show the best place to pick those up locally?

Thanks,
MtnWalker

Sportsmans has CCI small rifle primers for 24.00 per 1000 (off the top of my head). But powder is just a lost cause around here. I think we should arrange a group buy from Wideners and split the hazmat. Anyone in?

Mail order here usually has better prices than Wideners:
http://www.powdervalleyinc.com/

They don't have military bulk bullets for reloading but better prices on everything else.
Also freight is less from Powder Valley in KS than Wideners in TN.

Don't forget to check out Big R if you are near one.... prices on powder and primers is about on par w/ Sportsmans.... most of the rest of their shooting supply inventory blows.
I did buy a MEC Jr. shotgun loader for $106 when everyone else has them for $140 though.
Check for red tags... mark downs.

I might might be in for something like a group buy. Depends, of course what we could get or have to get, pricing, etc. Somebody better at organizing than I am would have to put it together. Thanks for your ideas.

Well, I reload .223 only for now, I'm going to concentrate on that, and maybe work up a good 6.5 Grendel load as well. Due to the difficulty of getting Varget, I'm probably going to go to Hodgons' BLC-(2) since it apparently feeds very well as a spherical and has a burn rate very similar to Varget. It's 117.50 at Powder Valley, and unlike Varget anywhere else, its actually in stock. Plus they have CCI #41 5.56 mm MILITARY PRIMERS - per case of 5000 for only $140.00. Hell thats about the same as 1/2 box here locally.

But, .223 bullets are cheaper at Wideners, 55gr coming in at 345.00 for 5000 rounds, thats only 3.5c per bullet, which is pretty hard to beat anywhere.

I'm up for taking about 3000 rounds of primer and bullets if someone else wants the other 2k (or two people want 1k each). And we can all get a powder/primer shipment from Powder Valley. Hows that sound?

I have ordered from Powder Vally before. Pricing is what it is. I do not think anyone has a better price. I do know that many of the competitive shooters do a bulk purchase once or twice a year.

Ordering 1/2/4 lbs of powder is just not cost effective. My last order was 19lbs.

Also understand that the Hazmat fee is per package up to (I believe) 50lbs. That means 6 jugs of 8lbs can go on one Hazmat fee.

I am thinking about another order here in the near future. Your welcome to drop me a PM if you would like to get in on it. I am in the springs.

Well, Wideners has bullet and wolf primers at a better price, but slightly higher shipping. It really only makes sense for folks that are near eachother to do a bulk order, cause otherwise, its just as costly in gas/time for me to drive to the springs or vice versa. I know I'm down for the bulk purchase for 223 stuff tho. I'll just do a bullet/primer order with Widners and a powder order with PVI.

I'm interested in bullets and primers. As far as the bullets and primers go 1K would be good for me.

For powder I need to do some research and find out if there is a powder that will work for both .223 and the 5.7x28mm for my PS90 before I commit to buying anything. Or maybe just have to get two types of powder.

Think Pistol for the 5.7X28. I load for the 7.62X25 and in doing some checking AA7 seems one way to go. One of the fastest rifle powders (AA1680) is way too slow for 5.7 and too hot for anything over 40gr in .223.

I'd be interested in getting in on a group buy from PVI. Of course, this is assuming that the delivery point is somewhere near the Denver metro area.

I think we need to try and get two groups going. Now for those in Castle Rock they need to flip a coin. I am OK on bullets and primers.

I am going to have to stand this one out. I can't do anything until the spousal unit goes back to work. She's looking, but hasn't landed one yet.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas, guys. Hopefully it won't be too long before I CAN join in and get some quantity.

I'm getting ready to put in a powder/bullet order with PowderValley. Anyone want anything? If so we need to make arrangements to get money to me.

Anyone interested in a group buy let me know.
I don't know how much of a savings I can offer, but I will do it for cost. Off the books so to speak so no sales tax.

I can get milspec cci small rifles primers for 18$ per k.
IMR 4895 and WIN748 is 133 per 8lb

just for example
