I found this article about the "Blade Runner" and his murder charges interesting:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/23/world/africa/south-africa-gun-violence/index.html?hpt=hp_bn2

The statement I found most interesting was, "In 2000, South Africa passed the Firearms Control Act. Since then, violence by handguns, Taylor said, has dropped (http://www.africacheck.org/reports/did-gun-control-cause-fall-in-gun-crime-the-data-backs-the-claim/) steadily, often by double digits (http://www.gca.org.za/HomePage/tabid/1120/ctl/Details/mid/8209/ItemID/1163/language/en-US/Default.aspx)."
Please note, "Since then, violence by handguns, Taylor said, has dropped (http://www.africacheck.org/reports/did-gun-control-cause-fall-in-gun-crime-the-data-backs-the-claim/) steadily, often by double digits (http://www.gca.org.za/HomePage/tabid/1120/ctl/Details/mid/8209/ItemID/1163/language/en-US/Default.aspx)." And see how they don't say the stat on just violence but specifically point out gun violence? There is CNN for you.

The Gunpolicy.org website they reference was pretty interesting too when you start comparing USA and SA.

Start comparing gun ownership-
USA: 88 per 100
SA: 12.7 per 100

Rate of gun deaths (2009)
USA: 10.22 per 100K
SA: 33.8 per 100K

Rate of all Homicides (2009) [what I ultimately care about]
USA: 5.48 per 100K
SA: 33.8 per 100K [Wow2]

I guess that's why, "In the past year, more than 50% of South Africans told the country's police force (http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/crimestats/2012/downloads/crime_statistics_presentation.pdf) that they're afraid. The number of home burglaries across the country of 50 million have more than doubled. They totaled 9,063 in a 12-month period spanning 2002/2003; seven years later, it was up 18,786. And in a similar period ending in 2012, reported break-ins dipped to 16,766, according to South Africa's crime reporting body, the Institute for Security Studies (http://www.issafrica.org/).'

Sorry, I couldn't post the whole thing without a bunch of formatting and of course I'm not telling anybody in here something they don't know. I also haven't done the research on how scientific and unbiased gunpolicy.org is but I have my suspicion.

Post is more a geewizz and maybe a quick reference for when I hear about how safe all these countries are that went and banned guns. I'm going to go dig for some other countries later.

they said last night on the news that SA has a less than 10% conviction rate for murder cases that go to trial. below is a copy and paste from usa today.

In murder cases, the number of convictions in South African courts is "staggeringly low," said Rodney Uphoff, professor of law at the University of Missouri. He estimated that less than 10% of murder cases end in conviction, in part because of a lack of resources in the system. "The vast majority (of cases) will be dismissed for want of prosecution," Uphoff said, adding there are often delays in trials and witnesses sometimes don't show up for testimony.

Isn't it amazing how much progress South Africa has made as a country since the African National Congress won power in 1994?

Call me skeptical but I have a nearly impossible time believing that percentage.

Don't know how accurate an anti-gun report is. However the folks i know in SA tell a different story.

If you think that is bad just look at what has happened in Rhodesia. [Bang]

it would probably be something like that if all the firearms in america were distributed equally to each citizen lol

I think that number is simply taking the number of guns owned by americans and dividing them up by the total population. Last I heard, there were 200+M guns in our great country of 300M. So that kind of sounds reasonable if you look at it that way. But, it skews the numbers to fit the agenda, whether they want it to look like USA is better off or worse off for having the guns.

Rhodesia was the pearl of Africa. Zimbabwe has 100 Trillion dollar bills. You do the math on majority rule in Rhodesia.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and no racism intended- just a statement of fact- but if my history is correct, Rhodesia and SA went downhill when the whites left power... Now look at America (see: POTUS)... [Peep]

The whites never LEFT it was taken from them via "elections"and world wide outcry to end Apartheid, with the promise of ALL people sharing in the greater good. Until the elections were over, history speaks for itself . SA really is not that bad compared to Z. Crime is off the charts in a large portion of SA however, what you do not see in media reports / propaganda, is how armed those who cherish their freedom & SAFETY are.

I didn't want to say something insipid like "ever since the white Africans were forced from power." You're right, they didn't leave by choice. I have a couple of buddies I try to keep in touch with that were contractors in Afghanistan that are both from SA. There's a section of road (IIRC "Devil's Highway") that has the highest number of violent car jackings, robberies, and kidnappings of any road in the world! They said they don't travel that road at less than 150KPH (about 95MPH or so) and they don't stop for shit. Yep, really a nice place to visit... kinda like Chicago.
