Something sounds off about his story. He hears his dog barking and sees two masked men leaning inside an open window . . . but there's more: they both point guns at him and tell him to "close the door and go away" or some nonsense. Sounds to me like he fired a couple of shotgun blasts through an interior door through stupidity then needed to think of an excuse for why he did that when the cops showed up.
