View Full Version : Thoughts on a good red dot
So I am in the market for a good red dot for my new build.
I really don't want to spend an arm and a leg on an eco-tech.
But want something that is quality and will hold a zero well.
I'm open for any thoughts sense I don't know to much on
red dots. Want to try to keep it under $120.
Thanks.

Vortex optics. That's the best you're gonna get for not a lot of dough.
Sub $200 Vortex or Primary Arms... Otherwise get aimpoint.

If this is going on an AR that is going to sit in the safe and get 500rds a year through it, then vortex or Primary Arms should be fine because a failure isn't going to be that big a deal.
If you're going to be using this for a duty/HD gun I'd suggest saving up and getting an Aimpoint PRO. Buy once, Cry once.
Agree with above started with a vortex and then bought the aimpoint leaps and bounds difference

I have had very good success with Primary Arms. I have 2 red dots from them and 1 4x16 scope. Had a problem with the threads on the battery compt of one red dot last year. They sent a new one out next day air on their dime. Told me to send the defective one back when I had time. On their dime. New one works perfect. Holds zero better then I hold the gun.
Recently got the micro dot and it is flawless. The scope is also flawless and has held zero perfect with 100 rounds fired. The fit and finish has been outstanding on all products.
For the price and service, they have been perfect.
Thanks everyone for the information. I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to optics.
I will be doing a lot of range time, and my build won't be sitting in the safe. I will do lots
of research on the products listed that you guys suggested. Much appreciated.
I'm looking at the Bushnell TRS-25 or Primary Micro Dot for my 15-22. Anyone use these that can give some input?

On a .22 you can get away with a cheap optic. My 15-22 has been running an aimpoint replica made for airsoft just fine. On a 5.56/223 rifle it probably wouldn't last a day.
To the op, you can find an aimpoint pro for $300-400 on the used market if you keep an eye out. I think you'll be much happier than settling on a sub $200 if you plan on actually using that rifle.
I have a Bushnell trs-25 and 1" riser on my cheap doublestar 15 carbine... It's seen a 2-day carbine course with KellyTTE and another 1,000rd's after, without any issues holding zero. I did have a heavy ass UBR stock on it for a while though, so that absorbed some of the recoil that could affect zero... time will tell now that the UBR is on my Seekin's lower, but so far I have no qualms with my cheap bushnell trs-25.

if you are looking for bang for your buck, aimpoint and eotech will almost always be the long term best deal. The upfront hurt is what makes it suck.
I have had experience with Bowers Tactical (Centennial) and Mod Armory (Colorado Springs), both have had great prices, I settled on the AimPoint PRO for my needs and it runs about ~$415-$420 at those places. Mod Armory usually has them in stock and Bowers can usually get them in pretty quick.
The Bushnell TRS-25 is about the best you are going to find for less than $200.

Take a look at the Bresser Tactical micro dot (Aimpoint H1/T1 clone) selling at Midway. It's the same as the Primary Arms MD-06 micro dot and performs just as well. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/421145/bresser-red-dot-sight-1x-22mm-3-moa-dot-matte
