As the title says. I am new to Match Shooting and it was reccomended that I start off with IDPA. I have signed up for the national IDPA membership and am just waiting for my membership number to come in so I can submit my Front Range IDPA membership form.

What else do I need to be ready to go? My goal is to get all of the paperwork done before the Aug 9th Match at Clear Creek so I can participate.

Any and all help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks in advance!!!

How many rounds should I bring to the match? I am going to be using a Springfield XDm-40. I have 4 magazines, two standard and two high capacity. From the rule book it looks like we can only have 10 rounds in the magazines for the matches and no stages should take more than 18 rounds to complete. When I looked at the results from previous matches it looks like there are around 4 stages. So I think 100 rounds should be sufficent. Yes, No?

wfwsorge

I always have at least 150 rounds, but sometimes I might shoot more. 100 should be enough.

Even though they are 18 round stages, you might need all 31 rounds to complete. :)

So typically you have three magazines. One in the pistol, and two on your belt. But the pistol can have one in the chamber along with 10 in the magazine right?

You are correct. For a total of 31 rounds.

An 18 round stage doesn't always equal firing only 18 rounds.
I have watched MANY people use ALL 31 rounds, and NOT finish the plate rack, or the Texas Star.
But, you will learn about that. [ROFL1]

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies and answers to my questions!!! It is much appreciated.

I think I will bring at least 200 rounds just in case I need them. I would rather have too many rounds verses not enough.

Ok, here is probably a stupid question. Do you also bring your own table and chair to setup your stuff for reloading and what not?

pickenup
07-24-2008, 00:41
I, along with several others, always bring a fold-up chair, no table.

Don't get to sit in it much with "re-setting" the stage between each shooter. (taping targets, re-setting steel, etc) But I do get to sit in it when reloading mags.

Thanks, that makes total sense.

make sure you also bring snacks, plenty of water and sunscreen.

One more question. During the FRIDPA matches do you guys require the pistol and magazines to be concealed during the competition? Such as wearing a vest or long shirt?

wfwsorge

Vests are encouraged but not required.

One last question. What time should I show up at the Clear Creek range to get the new member orientation class before the match?

I just wanted to make sure to let you guys know that I am still going to the match this Saturday and will be showing up early for the training class. Is there anyone in particualr that I should be asking for / looking for when I get there?

Watch out for the guy with the 9mm on his side.
He "may" wound something. [ROFL3]

Everyone congregates somewhere around the big table, you will see it.
Tell just about anyone there that you are there for the class.
Someone will direct you to it.
It is about 15 paces south.

Tell the first person you see that you are there for the new shooters class. Leave your pistol in a case until your instructor tells you to go ahead and uncase it.

Also, during the class, no ammo or loaded mags on you.

Remember to have fun.

Thanks to all that helped me out today. Even though it was a long day and we got rained out I still had fun and everyone was really nice and helpful. Is the Pueblo IDPA match this coming Sunday next week?

Hoser

Glad you had fun.

The rain deal is just part of hanging out with Sorge. We have got used to it.

Pueblo is next Sunday. Bring a rifle like an AR for the side match.

Rain.......you call that rain?
You could call it a........downpour. [Mad]

Good to hear you had fun.
The "classifier" usually only happens once a year at Clear Creek.
Most of the time, there are stages "like" the blind stage set up on every berm. Then your squad rotates to each berm to shoot it.

What did you think of the blind stage? Did they let you take the bucket off your head, BEFORE you started shooting it? I heard they let some people shoot WITHOUT the bucket on their head. That is cheating. Just kidding. I like blind stages. NOT that I do that well. [ROFL1]

There is a handgun match next Saturday at the Boulder Rifle Club. (Side match, precision rifle) then the IDPA match in Pueblo on Sunday.

Have fun.

pickenup> I didn't get a chance to do the blind stage so I missed out on that one. Oh well, thats how it goes some times. I am pretty easy going so I wasnt too worried about missing out on it. Can you give me some more information on the Boulder Rifle club match? Is this an IDPA event? I would like to attend that event if I could and any information on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Boulder match is NOT affiliated with IDPA (or anyone else) in any way.
Information sent via PM.

We start at 10:00. The new to IDPA class starts at 8:00 and set-up begins around 6:30. Depending on how many people show up to help with set-up, it will be a 6 stage match.

The day before in Pueblo is the Sniper Match.

Hoser> Thanks for the info. I will get there early and try to help you guys set up. I took the new to IDPA class at clear creek this last saturday so I don't think I need it again.
