How to fix the repost epidemic?
First, I suggest people dont start a new thread.
Second, If you opened your email or facebook account and found something you think is cool...dont post it.
Third, if you saw it on the news and its older than 5 minutes old, dont post it.
If you are unable to follow those suggestions, then try this...
Look at the wording of the title you want to post. Then put the most important words into the search. This will probably tell you that whatever cool thing you found, has already been posted. Then all you have to do is bump the older thread with your new "gee whiz" comments. Thus starting the conversation all over.
If you dont find anything that matches your new found cool topic. Post a thread about it.
*****ATTENTION******
How to post a thread...
POST the NEW Thread in the correct Sub Forum. Dont put legislation, handgun, hunting questions in the general forum. The mods have created sub forums for that purpose.
USE A DESCRIPTIVE TITLE, TRY TO INCLUDE THE KEY POINTS OF THE TOPIC INTO THE TITLE.
none of these vague, stupid, creative titles. This is why we have so many reposts. Dont try to be cute, you arent.
Once you have a great title created, then you need the body of your message.
NO BLIND LINKS...If you post a link, include where the link takes you. and what it contains. IF it is not safe for work, then post NSFW. Some of these guys work in environments that monitor their internet usage.
Then to really help the forum. There are TAGS at the bottom of the thread, to help with the search. This will help eliminate reposts.
To search on this forum, use the key words associated with the thread. not conjunctions. You may actually be successful this way.
Maybe we should explore deleting threads older than a certain amount of time.
Thank you for your time and lets make this forum a better place.

How about a section on spell checking titles?

I seriously don't stay awake worrying about reposts. Sadly I get most of my news from here and an occasional update on a story is nice without having to sift through 10 pages of banter on a slightly related topic.

How about a section on spell checking titles?
I think you found the issue! If I do a search and it is spelled wrong; my post runs a good chance of being a re-post....
But I guess if I spelled it correctly, it wouldn't technically be a re-post.... Right?

How about we don't sweat them? Sounds good.
I like the history of the site. It's fun to search for a subject and read up on how things have changed over the years. I said "Never".
If folks had titles that were more descriptive than 'I can't believe it...' or 'Check this out', it would be helpful.

I should amend my thread to say... if your thread is about you or your experience only, then cutesy titles are ok.
example...if Sniper7 is flying and has to beat a passenger down, because they took his parking space and then drank his coffee. Then its ok to make a thread saying OMG Had a Crazy day.

I don't bother even thinking about new posts here. If I don't see something, I just wait and either someone else will post it, or someone will get flamed for reposting. Either way, it pops up and I'll see it then. Folks should be more careful about a descriptive title, but that's one of those "eye of the beholder" things too. Someone may think they're being descriptive, and others don't. Too damn much drama here about this stuff for me.
If you delete threads immediately, everything will be new and there will be no reposts!

Hahahaha, I couldn't either. I stopped after the second sentence. He started a new thread to tell people not to start new threads. Hmmmm...
I know the reposts can be frustrating, and people should take the time to search, and having a good title can go a long way. But the threads about reposts are now reposts as HB pointed out. Whatevs.

that was my point really.
we have reposts that are down the page 4 threads and have comments that are less than 12 minutes old.
i used to never post. i read and read. UNTIL all the new members showed up and arent taking their ADHD medicine. Now, they are super hyperactive and cant focus. All they do is repost, continually, refuse to search and then get mad when they are called on it.
i would love for the forum to go back to being calm. not a bunch of spastic people who got into the gun "game" last month and are spazzing about the future.

This^^^
ETA: A polite link to a similar thread would be helpful, but trying to squash a new guy who doesn't live on here (as obviously some of you do) is going to keep the community small and stagnant. I also think actually titling a thread correctly would help a lot. "This drives me crazy!" or "Who woulda thunk it?" etc may be fun to write but are useless in trying to figure out if something is already being discussed.

I'm on board with those comments; I have better things to worry about. I also think it's unfair to assume some people who have only been contributing lately are "new to the gun game". I'm glad more are contributing and are worried.

it really has nothing to do with new guys. or people who spend all day on here. which you obviously think is dumb. but those people must spend all day on facebook, because they see the topic and instantly post it here. instead of even thinking to look and see if it was already here.
and I am 100 percent behind people creating good, descriptive thread titles. read my thead. but, some people are still too lazy to look first.
right now we have something like 5 magpul threads going on. why? it would be alot easier to discuss it in 1 thread.
and for mrghost, if you arent the problem, then I wasnt talking to you. new or old, its important to keep the reposts down. it makes the forum difficult to navigate. i know you said you guys dont spend much time here. well then just read here, dont feel the need to make duplicate threads.
I'm 100% in agreement on the constant blind-link Facebook-article-du-jour stuff. The only problem is that occasionally something good might not get the attention it deserves - like the Magpul bit.

Yeah, me either.
I actually don't care at all about reposts
^^this, it don't really bother me much either, sometimes I miss the first one and I catch the second or third, I don't have all day to sit here and catch everything nor do I have the time to waste when I get home to read through 10+ pages of new posts for the day, so if something gets posted 3-4 times it gives me a better chance to read it.

Just based on my observations, it's usually the guys with very low post counts that are "guilty" of reposts, but maybe I'm wrong. That's what I meant by "new guys." Based on your poll and this thread, it looks like reposts aren't as important to most of us like they are to you.
Great job titling this thread, BTW[Score]

While that's normally nice. You may have missed an important piece of update to the topic because there are multiple threads on the same damn thing. As we are facing many anti gun bills, we need to be more cohesive. I think the main issue is the most don't take the TITLE too seriously when he/she creates a thread. TITLE it properly, and we will eliminate most of the reposts here. Title is the SUBJECT matter..not the beginning of the first sentence of your post.

I've certainly missed some stuff because it's spread out everywhere it seems. But, I'm new to the board NOT to gun ownership.
You've got a ton of threads in a multitude of sub sections, it's going to be really hard to micro manage how a member searches, or phrases his new thread. Obviously one should look around before starting a new thread, but most folks are now now now and me me me.....it's human nature. Reposts are going to happen at a site of this size dealing with a very hot topic in society right now.
Maybe shit will chill out after some time goes by.

naw... mp.net arfcom along with other pioneer forums still have the same issue. Once awhile some members get slapped on the wrist..but it's all up to the mods to keep up. Our mods are very responsive compare to some other sites out there. Wtg mod /brown nose.com

You could also make this a private board and screen the members first. Apply to the board and follow strict guidelines, or you're out.
You could revoke the ability to start threads without approval first.

No, it's just that I run a few boards myself, but they're not open to the public....and nowhere near this busy. Just throwing out ideas.
Hell.....if I was Obama, I would be sending checks to everyone and forcing them to join this board....after I changed it from AR's to "Sex toys for same sex Couples" or something just as retarded as that.

How about when you submit a new Thread, the forum automatically does a search and lists the related existing threads and kills the new one. If no matches, then it allows the new thread. (or something like that)

I'm no computer guy but that sounds like a super high-tech piece of technology for a board that should just accept that all these people together are bound to bring up the same thing from time to time. Especially when there are so many news articles for things that are near and dear to our hearts, like the topic of guns and gun control.
