Would it be possible to have a members only section within the forum?

I suspect making parts of the forum private etc, could/would open the site up to more trouble than it's worth. Mainly because we have open discussions about so many things firearm related and by being public we are able to say "We aren't hiding anything, and we are happily expressing our 1A rights, legally."
If you are worried about saying something on the forums here, chances are pretty good you wouldn't want to be saying them anywhere else either.

Yes, I know it's possible.
Discussion area out on the floor, and a separate area for members only.

To me, it's not as much about that, as it is about non gun people being able to see what enthusiasts are talking about.....Not that what we say has to be hidden, but it doesn't need to be available to just EVERYBODY either, ya know?

I do see your point. But even though I am not saying anything wrong doesn't mean I want to share every word with everyone. Just like I wouldn't want every conversation I am having with my friends posted for everyone to see and open to their biases or interpretations. Not everything necessarily needs to be shared. I know that with a public forum it goes with the terriory when you post something which we all are ok with or else we wouldn't be here. There is also nothing wrong with a closed door conversation at times.
I often wondered about that as well.
I have a few theorys about it.
Some of it I think is some people that want to discreetly look up firearm info and knowledge and not be attatched to the"gun crazies".Then of course there are the ones watching from g broker and arms list to see what outrageous prices they can get away with.
Typical spammers seeing what they can peddle. And most certainly the agendist who is looking for more points for their side.
Oh and yes big brother...[tinhat]
So we have to act and post somewhat civilly and show the "guests" that we are a group of respectable and responsible law abiding Americans...[Flower]

I think for the most part, (WE) folks at sites like these.... DO post and behave responsibly when seriously discussing gun related topics. Sometimes though, the threads that are off topic, and we're having fun, sometimes can cast a somewhat suspicious shadow upon the participants. Depending.
It's like the difference between your mother knowing what you're doing to that woman in your bedroom, or what your mother suspects you are doing to that girl in your bedroom.
Capice?
lol

Lol!I know what your saying.Sometimes I read stuff on here that's like realy? And you own a gun???Just looks bad for us.
But no matter what, you will have a few bozos like that no matter where you go.
For the most part this is by far one of the best sites that I have seen where we as a group act with respect and decency.
And we do have fun :D And thats what it's all about[Beer]

Yeah, I think it's a cool place here with good folks I think.
I almost got in trouble in another thread a minute ago though. God forbid tits. I'm too used to posting on private boards.
You know, one other thing I wonder about this being open.... it's great when you and I are excited about when we get our email from Magpul...and find out our stuff is coming to our house... Any swinging prick with a computer can sit around and keep tabs on all that stuff.
Another board I am on, the General Discussion section only shows up when you are logged in. We could do that with GD, Politics, Concealed carry, and a ton more subforums, but all you have to do to see them is join the site, which takesonly seconds.
I didn't start this post with the intention of making it a closed site. I'm all for anonymity but with the current climate 200+ lurkers does make me wonder...
What would adding a "login to view" really change? I doubt GunGrabber would start an account with their official email account.

We should make the site private to members only. If you want to see what we talk about, sign up
What would adding a "login to view" really change?
Nothing at all.
I think part of the potential problem would be that people would derive a false sense of security from posting in the "Members Only" section, and might voice some posts that would be better not offered for public consumption.
I'm waiting for the "guests" number to spike after the hearings.
Be cautious of another spamocolypse..
