NASCAR’s Newest Race: the NRA 500
By Andrew Johnson

March 5, 2013 4:05 P.M.

NASCAR drivers will compete in a newly named race on the Texas Motor Speedway this season: the NRA 500. The speedway and the guns-rights group signed (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20130304-nra-to-sponsor-nascar-race-at-texas-motor-speedway.ece) a one-year partnership this week, making it the first NASCAR race to feature the NRA as a title sponsor.

The speedway’s president doesn’t seem concerned about political backlash to the deal, calling the partnership “a very natural fit” between NASCAR fans and NRA supporters. The winner of the Texas Motor Speedway race is traditionally photographed holding six-shooters and a cowboy hat, so the NRA does seem like a good sponsor.

The partnership comes as the NRA is the center of the intense debate over gun violence, which has touched NASCAR, too. Last month, driver Michael Waltrip honored Sandy Hook Elementary School victims with car decals with information on how to donate to a support fund.

Politics has managed to find its way onto the NASCAR stage in the past: For example, Texas governor Rick Perry sponsored (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/state&id=7367711) a car leading up to his 2010 reelection.

Perfect. What better way to disassociate the average gun-owner from the racist, hillbilly stereotype we are already labeled with, than to get Skeeter and Jethro out at the track to represent us publicly? This will do wonders for the NRA's image. /sarcasm

If there is a sport that is even close to a realistic cross section of the actual American public, it is NASCAR. Was not always so, but it is now.

BRILLIANT move! Nascar is one of the only sports on the planet where women make up over 40% of the fan base! Nascar has a huge conservative fan base (though that doesn't mean liberals don't watch it). I think it is the perfect group of people to market to. A good number of conservatives but still plenty of liberals to try and attract. A good 58/42 split of men and women. I, for one, am glad to see this move! It will start attracting even more women with women drivers like Danica.

Ok, I looked up the actual demographics for NASCAR fans, and it appears the hillbilly stereotype is the one that's wrong. As of 2010, roughly 41% are women, and roughly 20% belong to a minority group. Maybe this is a smart move after all. I retract my earlier, ignorant comment.

I wonder what anti-gun car team sponsors will do. I'm not sure how many there are but there is at least one, Jeff Gordon has AARP as a major sponsor.

I like the idea as long as it doesn't cost the NRA too much.

The sponsorship is very low key. Hardy could tell they are sponsoring it.

The cowards at fox didn't televise the victory lane celebration with the six shooters. I though fox was unbiased. Well pc won the night. The NRA was an invisible sponsor.

Man dies after shooting self at NASCAR race in Texas, medical examiner says FORT WORTH, Texas – A medical examiner says a man who died in the infield during a NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway shot himself in the head.
The Tarrant County medical examiner's office on Sunday said the death of 42-year-old Kirk Franklin of Saginaw was a suicide.
Fort Worth police have said a man who was camping in the infield died of a "self-inflicted injury" after getting into an argument with other campers. The incident happened late in the Spring Cup race.
Police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight has said alcohol may have been a factor. Knight said several people witnessed the incident, but nobody was in danger.
Track spokesman Mike Zizzo say the death occurred "in or around a pickup truck" in part of the infield near the middle of the backstretch.

...the death occurred "in or around a pickup truck"
Brilliant reporting. So you're saying it happened anywhere in Texas.

The incident happened late in the Spring Cup race.
Was alcohol involved in the reporting of this piece? "Spring Cup"?

...and in other news, 300 million guns harmed no one.

If you Google NRA 500 the first 4 pages are full of articles about the suicide.

I'm with Ridge on this one... Call it whatever you want to, it's still left-hand turn club NASCAR, not really my thing.
