View Full Version : So I won a rifle!
I won a RMEF Rem 7mm mag at the RMEF dinner. Nice rifle with a camo stock. I wish it had open sights. I already have a 30-06 that I love and shoot very well for elk. My next pruchase was probably going to be a Marlin 45/70 for the dark timber and backup rifle.
7mm and 30-06 being so similar, should I trade it for a 45/70, or just keep it as a backup?
What do you like for dark timber elk guns other than the Marlin?

I would keep the 7mm as your primary and keep the 06 as a back up. The 7mm shoots much flatter and has a lot more energy. I have nothing agianst the 06 I own one my self and took an antelope last year with it.
I would use the 7mm as your primary and use the 06 as a brush gun if it was me.
just my .02
I would use the 06 as opposed to the 7 Mag for my GP rifle esp is elk is on the ticket? My main reason is heavier bullets. IF you had tostick with the 7 for eld I woudl run the 175 grainers from Barnes.
For dark Timber guns I runt he following.
Marlin 45/70 in a Scout configuration.
Savage 99 in 358 Winchester with a 2x7 burris
Winchester Mod 70 in 338/06 Ackley OImproved with a 2x7 Burris
Winchester Mod 70 Classic in 375 H&H with a Luepold 1.5x5
Savage 99 with a 2.5x Luepold in Scout configuration in 308
Styer Scout in 308
Sauer 200 in 9.3x62 Mauser with a Swaorwski 3x9.
All of these make great timber guns.
