View Full Version : question about carry on a military base...
A buddy of mine who is in the Army, is taking another buddy of mine who is a Sheriff's Dep. to the PX at Buckley later today. Just curious if my buddy who is the LEO can legally carry on the base, or if he should just leave the baby Glock at my place? Anybody know how this one works? I couldnt find a number for the police on base so I havnt been able to get find a definate answer. Just to be on the side of caution, ill probably make him take the shit off and leave it at my place before we all roll up there!
Nope, no unregistered weapons allowed on bases, IIRC...

The military has their own rules regarding weapons on base. I personally do not know enough about them to say one way or the other.
My advice would be to leave it at your place. Your buddy may be a LEO, however a military base is federal property.
yeah, thats what i ended up doing. just had him put his weap. and badge in my safe. although when i got up there we asked the guys at the main gate when we were filling out a visitor pass and they said they were fine with an leo carrying if he was in uniform, and he wouldnt need a visitor pass. odd!

I think you did the right thing. If he was in uniform, then it would be assumed that he was working and on offical duty, and he was not.
In uniform *and * on duty is ok.
Anything else is bad juju.

I recently retired from the Air Force and still work on Schriever AFB (hush-hush stuff).
I was an Air Force cop for a while @ Peterson and the rules were (this was in 2002 - I doubt they've changed):
Firearms can be carried by civiliam LE personnel in the performance of their duties when in uniform (the "uniform" thing was sort of a grey area because some "uniforms" are street clothes). BUT, they all had to check in at the LE Desk of the Security Forces Squadron and coordinate their activities PRIOR to engaging in said duties.
Now, places like Fort Carson and the USAF Academy allow hunting on the installations. This presents a whole different set of rules (at least @ the Academy) but the gist is that the individual can direct carry their firearms to the pre-approved hunting location unloaded and locked.
Military personnel living in base Family Housing are allowed to keep their weapons in their homes and may direct carry from their home to the gate (& vice versa). Military personnel with firearms on temporary duty assignment (TDY) must report the firearm to the gate guard and are usually escorted to the armory where they must be checked in for the duration of their stay (the armory guys HATE checking out personnel firearms for TDY folks who want a little recreational weekend shooting).
Like I said, that's what the rules were for AF bases as of 2002. Your friend did the right thing by not taking a firearm with him. As someone who has had 19yo kids with a loaded/chambered (and safety off) M9's pointed at me, I no longer like to give them ANY excuse to get nervous around me!
last 2 post are correct for Army posts as well.

Holy crap! I'm prior service army(11B) and NEVER thought about it this way! That is pretty damn scary when you think about it!

You've got better odds against one of those kids with an M16 - while there is a full mag in the rifle, there are no rounds chambered!

I got in trouble when I first started shooting. I was in the Marine Corps and had a Sig-220 in my locker. Wouldn't you know it? We has an inspection and I had no clue.
All sorts of discussions while we waited for my senior nco to arrive...Like Leavenworth ect. I was pretty suprised when I recived an njp and a slap on the hand...and 2 hours to make the pistol "go away"
In the end, I lost 6 months on my 1st good conduct medal and that was it. And I lost 150 bucks reselling the weapon to a dealer...a bummer but thats not to bad I suppose.
I would NEVER carry anything loaded or unloaded, conceled or not onto a military base. I wouldnt even hunt in one if I could. You lose a lot of your protection and rights when your on a military base. You fall under thier rules and regulations and rather than face something small, EVERYTHING becomes a felony. You were smart to leave it at home ...
