So, the wife decided it would be good to have some window well covers for our 4 window wells that are about 5 feet deep. doesnt want our son to fall into them while playing outside!

I looked around and it seemed like most places wanted $350 per window well for metal covers. the plastic ones were flimsy or not big enough. plus we have an emergency escape ladder on one so it would need a door...about $450-500 for just that one cover!!! :o

took me about a day and a half to get them done. total cost was about $160

obligatory pics!

I think I am going to change the color to black though. bought this textured rustoleum paint and i really am not impressed. with the texture or color.

Did a similar job for my last home. I used angle iron for frames to set on the wells rather than your finger brackets. Nice work. Wish I'd had a shop and tooling like that though. Knowing me I did it outside in today like weather with a hack saw and a 115v wire feed.

Nice work! Exactly what I had planned for my one window well. I probably won't make the ladder hatch though, just so it's loose enough to toss off in an emergency.

I was actually thinking about this. Could be a pretty good little side gig! I'll see how they fit next week after I get the exact paint I want. I have a few things I would do a little different, but overall these turned out awesome.

Paint them green or what ever the surrounding area is. They do look nice and sturdy.

Could even secure them to the bottom of the window well to be another burglary barrier. Put a quick release pin/hook down there, so you could still get out in an emergency.

Yep already in place. Chain to the foundation with quick release clips so they can be thrown off. The door has a piece welded on with a loop to attach a chain or wire as well so you can unhook and toss it open. Also considering a gate type attachment so when the door swIngs up against the house it latches in place.

Nice work! They will pay form them selves instantly. My house was broken into through a basement window. We have since installed window well covers.

I have always said I wanted to learn how to weld. Most of the answers I got were, "Why?" Well, we've just seen here why. You can create stuff that doesn't fall apart, it's permanent, and it's usually, hopefully useful. Good work Sniper7, looks really good. Functional as all get out.

My wifes principal is next in line. he wants me to build 3 for his rental and 2 for his new house. I need to make some extra money to finish my basement! and planning on finishing the garage. got it all insulated. probably do that first to learn the skill or knock down texturing.

I'm trying to figure out a good price to charge on them. Seems they vary quite a bit online depending on size. I know when I checked home depot for mine they wanted $300 for the smaller ones and $350 or a little more for the bigger ones and not sure what the door one would have been. probably in the $200-$250 range for the basic ones and more for the door style i think would be pretty good.

but to answer your question I would definitely be down to do stuff on the side. I just don't want to do much. I only have so much time at home and don't want to be an old man welding and grinding and bending over this stuff!

thanks, yeah i only had a short try at welding in my high school and college years working for the county parks. then I got little bit more helping my buddy on various stuff at their shop working on trucks and building various accessories for them.

I can tell you these things are strong. my buddy and I stood on the one with the door today, so about 420 lbs between the two of us, no bends, no flex, nada!
