View Full Version : .22lr rifles that don't use mags
Thinking of picking up a new rimfire rifle that doesn't use mags. Any other good options other than the Mod 60 or Henry? Nothing worse than getting to the range for a day of shooting and finding out you forgot all those mags on the kitchen counter.
The model 60 is hard to beat. I know you asked for other recommendations, but my recommendation is for the model 60.

Remington 572
Marlin 39A , find an older one.
My mom has a Browning. It loads through a tube in the buttstock and ejects the empties out the bottom of the receiver.
Marlin 981 is tube fed, bolt action.
Remington 514 is single shot.
My other .22lr rifles have either already been mentioned or take detachable magazines.
If you get a tube fed, think about getting a Spee-D-Loader. Makes reloading much faster.

The Marlin 39A is a great rifle, but it does use a magazine--just not a detachable one.

Henry 22 lever actions would fit the bill.

My favorite is the older model Weatherby XXII semi-auto. Came in either a tube or mag fed version. Unfortunately they are pricey but they look good.
One shooter at our range...has an accurate single shot BSA Martini Henry rifle; in 22 long rifle.
An old single shot Stevens rolling block...was my first 22 rifle, when I was a kid; but it did not handle 22 high velocity's very well.
Some black powder enthusiast...just gave me his father's Marlin 39 Centennial lever action; which is one sweet little shooter.
+1 on the Marlin 981T
The only drawback about this model is the stock which flexes quite a bit. There are a handful of aftermarket stocks available but, to the best of my knowledge, none of them are "drop in" with tube-fed models.
Lots of great suggestions, but after doing a little more interweb research, I think I'm with Ray on this. Model 60 for less than 2 bills (even at Bass Pro), looks like a deal that can't be beat.
Although if I run across a Remy Nylon 66 (one that's loaded through buttstock) at a good price, I may not be able to pass it up. Everything I have read on the Remy suggests that it is one slick rifle, produced way ahead of its time.
You can't go wrong with the model 60. Plenty of plinking capacity, super reliable, and very affordable. I put tons of rounds through the one I had growing up.

I have the CBC clone of the Nylon 66 (from when Remi sold the tooling to CBC in Brazil). Cool little gun but feels cheap as hell because the plastic. positive is it is a great shooter for the little ones.
I do also have a tube fed Marlin model 60 that has eaten everything I have thrown at it for over 20 years. Been one of my favorite plinkers for most of that time.
I have two Model 60's, which is the same as the 795. The 60 has the tube mag and the 795 box mags. They function the same and they are both inexpensive and are very accurate right out of the box. Only a year ago you could pick one up from Dick's for just about $100 after the Marlin rebate.
You will get more shooting in with any .22lr rifle than you will with any other rifle.
I just can't wait till rimfire ammunition stocks get back to normal.
for me the Ruger 77/22 is the best, dammit, i sold mine a week ago :-(
I have a couple of Marlin 60's and swear by them. First round out of my 60SS was a headshot on a groundhog at 40 yards.
Another good one if you can find it is the Winchester 63. Loved my dads when I was young. Too bad if you can't find one these days they are over $500! Taurus made a copy of it, but I don't have any experience with theirs.

I cast a vote for the little Browning semi that loads through the stock. They are light, good looking and lots of fun to shoot. They also eject out the bottom of the receiver. Hard to beat in my opinion.

Marlin/Glenfield 75c. Carbine to the old style 60. Same size as a 10/22. http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/jerrymrc/toys/IMG_1137.jpg (http://s884.photobucket.com/user/jerrymrc/media/toys/IMG_1137.jpg.html)

Just picked up a Marlin XT 22TR (tube fed bolt action) for my boy. Holds 25 shorts, 19 Long, and 17 LR NO MAG!! Has the Marlin version of the acutrigger, was inexpensive and I hope to throw some lead range tomorrow for his first shoot!

Per some of the recommendations from this thread I picked up a Marlin 60 last week. I'm looking forward to getting out with my boy to take him on his first trip shooting...

Good choice. If you ever see a decent priced Nylon 66 they're great little guns as well.

I second the motion for the Marlin XT-22 TR. Didn't think I'd ever need another .22LR, then started pdogging and regularly come across fuzzys at 25-100 yards. The 17 capacity tube mag and reliable bolt action sold me, so I picked one up from Noah @Ark. Added a hunting sling, Weaver scope mounts and my Simmons 6.5-20x50mm, and it's ready to hit the plains!

The XT-22TR has benn fun and great out of the box. No sight adjustment using factory iron and my boy hits a golf ball on a string at 30 yds without issue. He picked it over the Henry Lever and neither of us regret it after about 300 rnds. I acturally prefer this over the Marlin 60 at times.
40195My CM-2 doesn't take a mag.. But something tells me this isn't what your looking for..

I'm looking to get the marlin 60 sometime soon, I love the idea of having a .22 that doesn't need mags.
About the coolest .22RF to me is the Browning SA .22. Remington copied it in the model 24 and Interarms in the ATD. Other than those, the Marlin 60 is the winner.

Browning SA-22 I have had one for years, still my favorite to shoot.

If you have the chance and can find, a Remington fieldmaster is a blast to shoot. Pump action that takes 22lr or 22 short. I love taking that thing to the range.

How would you go about selling a Marlin Model 60 if it is the older model where it holds more than 15rounds? Do you have to take it to a gun smith to meet the new laws of 15 rounds or is there an insert to use to make the capacity of 15?

I believe the .22 tube fed was exempt. Can't find those bills right now bit do a quick google search for the mag bill.

Found it yeah those are exempt.
I have a few good tube fed 22 rifles and they are all reliable: Marlin 39A lever, Remington 12 pump, 34 bolt, 341 bolt, 550-1 semi, Winchester 270 pump and 9422M lever. Some good tubes I've had in the past but don't have now: Marlin 60, and 75-20, Winchester 190, all good, plenty of choices out there, not a lot of new models though.

I have a JC Higgins Model 28, you know when you could buy a gun at Sears lol. The tube holds 18, I thought it was a Marlin Model 60 but I think that is at my dads house.

Liberty arms in ft fun has a few older marlin & winchester's i looked at the other day.
I've got a new Henry Golden Boy, and an old Marlin 39A original golden. Marlin is the winner by a long shot, but the Henry is still a very good lever action .22. Both smooth as all get out. 39A has a Williams peep sight, and boy is it accurate.
Of course the M&P 15-22 suppressed is a hoot too, but not the go-to gun for old school fun and accuracy. I keep thinking I should put a scope on something, but can't bear to actually do it. I'm not sure I could do any better with a scope than with the 39A and Peep sight. I think the Marlin might reject it, kind of like a transplant gone bad.
