I dont know why....but I've just had the random desire to own an AK...
Could someone enlighten me as to what would be a good manufacturer to go with and what a reasonable pre-panic and post-panic price would be?
I had one before for a little while but sold it...cant remember what it was, I think it was a Century Arms..but this was a couple years back now.
Sorry for Noobie questions...I just had that random desire to own an AK...
I guess I just really want to bitch about the bolt being on the wrong side of the gun and loving every minute of it...
These are getting excellent reviews:

Pretty much anything on this page.. notice there are no Century rifles listed.

I had this same random urge a few months back. Tried looking into building one from a parts kit, then go so freaking confused with the entire thing and how expensive everything had become, that I decided to just say screw it and stick to ARs. If they came back down in price and were sub-$500, I might look into getting one again, but something tells me those days are over.

I feel like I might find myself in the same boat...I cant justify a thousand bucks for a 70+ yr old wooden rifle...

Build one then. Very easy to do. And NightCat, you live spitting distance from one of the top importers of AK parts kits in the U.S.

Everyone bitches about CIA , I've never had a problem. I like the Yugos. Specialty SPorts had Arsenals for a $1,000ish and some others for $749. The hard part is finding ammo. GL

Interesting. It seems to me that some compliance parts would need to be swapped with this combo, yes? Are any other parts needed? Sorry, new to building AKs.

I had the same random urging about a month ago and ended up with an Arsenal 5.56 AK. Always wanted a AK74ish rifle and found a decent pre craziness price on one. As far as AK's go, this one is the nicest I've owned and actually shoots pretty decently too. I was interested in the 5.56 caliber as I have the ability to reload for it vs the others which rely on imported ammo. If you can find one, the Saiga made, Arsenal converted SGL series were some of the best deals going.

Well I never include compliance parts when showing a combo since people like to change out different parts but the easiest would be an American FCC that's 3 parts an American receiver and an American piston but some people rely on American mags (a mag has 3 countable parts) also milled ak's have 15 countable parts so only 5 parts are needed to get down to the required 10 parts while stamped ak's have 16 countable parts
I like AKs, mostly because I have plenty of cheap, steel-cased, non-corrosive ammo and I never feel the urge to clean it (as I do all my other weapons). Before owning one, I heard they were inaccurate, but I can shoot my AK (iron sights) better than my AR. It always accompanies me to the range; it has replaced my .22LR as my fun gun.
BTW, its a Romanian WASR with canted sights. Also have a Bulgarian AK74, which is also fun to shoot, but I take it out less since I feel the urge to clean it...since it so purdy.

People are paying $1500 average for a parts / built AR. Now a days you have to pay to play. If you're patient deals happen. not as often but they are still out there.

I have an AR, and I thoroughly enjoy it, Just every now and then I get that urge for off hand bolt manipulation and cheap ammo :P lol
I own a century firearms ak47 and I love it. Shoots whatever ammo I feed it, is pretty accurate and is just fun to shoot.

My Arsenal SAM7 will be here tomorrow. I got it direct from K-var for $1340 shipped. I was worried about the lead time but I ordered it on Sunday and tracking shows it in Commerce Shity already.
Already bought close to 1200 rounds and 8 mags for it.

i wouldn't mind one of those sam7 pistols
I hear great things about those Arsenal AK's, but have never laid hands on one. I have a WASR-10 that I got years ago before the silliness for like $350 back when boxes of Wolf were like $2.95 each. It has jammed twice (stuck shell when the lacquer melted due to a hot chamber) over thousands of rounds and very little cleaning. Would love the opportunity to see what a higher end AK is like one of these days.

Just like the wasr only more money. It took arsenal sometime to rectify feed issues on the slr-106. The finish sucked and it still cost close to $1K without the same high priced bulgy C10 5.56 mags.
While arsenal was dicking around with CS and feed issues a simple fix was done and posted on arfcom. 20-30sec with a dremel and no more feed issues.
Up side was accurate as hell fun to shoot chrome lined bbl and oh yeah, not everyone had one.
You could do some filing here, polishing there, replace the trigger, have zteknik redo the furniture and slap a nice finish on your wasr and you'd have a "higher end" AK.
A little makeup, hair styling and everyone's dating a movie star.;)

So true.
With a little fine tuning you can make a WASR just as good as any Arsenal
And I can make them crappy stocks look like a work of art! ;)
Wow, thanks for the info guys. You may have saved me from making a bad impulse purchase.
Maybe back to looking for another Saiga .308.

When you consider wasr's are now listed @ $799 on most vendors web sites, you do have a High End AK. Skip the saiga and invest in a VEPR in .308. They are rock solid accurate shooting irons. They even run circles around the M1A groupies

a vepr is hands down nicer than a saiga, they have 1.5mm receivers true rpk bulged trunnions and theres an american company making steel vepr .308 mags

If you do a internet search for "left handed AK" you will get quite a few hits on left handed parts and complete AK style guns. I don't know if any of them switch the ejection to the left side though.
Have Fun.

Ejection is still the same. Only the charging handle has been moved.
