View Full Version : what kind of Pmag should I purchase?
I don't own a rifle yet due to lack of funds but I think I should take advantage of the Magpul deal right now to purchase some.
I'm looking for some quick purchase advice since I have very little AR experience. I fired one once and it was fun enough. I actually want a SIG 556 but the price might force me into an AR instead. It accepts AR mags so I should be fine in the future unless they both get banned before I can afford one.
Windows? yes or no?
what's the difference between generation 2 and 3?
the most basic seems to be a 3rd gen, no window, 30 round.

5 of each type of 5.56 magazines. Differences don't matter.

Gen2, no window, MOE. You can buy more for your $$ and they'll do the same thing any of the others will. Unless a very high-dollar HK is in your future.

Now is not the time to be choosy. Buy all available within your spending limits.
Get 5 of each flavor and 10 of the LRs. Sweat the details later.
Gen 3 just fits a few guns other than the Gen 2 as far as I know. All of them will fit in any AR. The windowed versions look really cool when loaded, but honestly.... just go with what Robby said, and buy as many as possible. If nothing else, you can undoubtedly sell them at a profit just prior to the ban. Or even out of state.

This.
Windows just make them shine in the sun and cost extra money. You cant see the last ten rounds in there anyway so I think that the windowed ones are a waste of money for something that allows everyone a good look at how many rounds you have left in your mag. Just my 2 cents. I would order 5 of the window-less. I think that the instructions on the site are clear that it is 5 TOTAL mags for the order not 5 of each, but if you want to take advantage of a company that is doing good by us then so be it. Maybe I read it wrong.

What type of PMAG? Any one you can get your hands on.

it was recommended to me and I'll pass it along, try to get 20, 30rnd magazines. 15 here is a good start. You can try to get more than that, but 20 gets you in the game for quite awhile.
Agreed. If all you ever intend to use it for is plinking, 5 would do you fine. In a SHTF scenario, you're not going to have time to reload each mag by hand, and it might be nice to have several in a pack.

I dont see it as taking advantage of Magpul.
They are trying to take care of us. 10 years from now even the mags you didnt initially want could be important to you.

+1. It's not hurting them - they're going to get a nice surge in business to help them with the move. I'm glad they tried to help us out. Besides, the site already has limits in the checkout process for how many you can order - you can't order more than your fair share, to the best of my knowledge.

...but if you want to take advantage of a company that is doing good by us then so be it. Maybe I read it wrong. If they weren't selling them to us at MSRP they'd be selling them to distributors for less than MSRP so I don't see it as taking advantage.
The only disagreement I'd have to buying 7.62x51 mags is if you have a delivery platform of another flavor. M1A, for example.
...but buy as many quality standard capacity AR mags that you think you'll need + the ones you didn't think you would need but do.

I'm with everybody else, with HB1224 passing the house again today, I'd buy whatever you can get your hands on that you can afford. I've got my 15 coming in from Magpul (you'll be dearly missed) and will be on the look out for decent deals in the upcoming weeks. I'll have maybe 30+ by the time July rolls around. Just my $0.02.

Picked up 3 Lancers today. I've got 3 Molon Abe mags on pre-order. I've got a buddy in Texas sending me 13 PMAGs from his personal stash. That would bring my total mag count to 37, and I still haven't taken advantage of the Airlift yet. 50 is the goal before the law goes into effect. Any more than that would be gravy.
OP, don't forget that EMAGs will work for you as well. A lot of people forget about these when they're preoccupied clamoring for PMAGs.

in the end it doesn't even matter. Buy what you can afford.

better bump the number up... 50 seems like a small stash nowadays. [AR15]

Just got 10 ordered.
Ironic since I wasn't planning on buying more mags, but I figured that I probably should while I could still get those dangerous hi-caps!

Correction. I would actually be at 40 not counting the airlift.
You may be right, but I don't plan on owning more than five rifles which would accommodate those mags. So I'll be at 10 mags per gun, which is adequate for me. I shoot as often as I can, but not enough to burn through mags that quickly.
I'm hoping Magpul and the other mag manufacturers will offer mag repair kits, or maybe a 1 for 1 exchange program on mag bodies for those of us stuck behind the Communist side of the wall.
