I fully entend to move back to Australia when I'm done with school in just under a year. Due to Australian gun laws only a select few of my firearms would be able to come with me(bolt action rifles and handguns smaller than 40 caliber and with less than 10 round mags). I'm up in the air with whether or not I should sell everything that would be ineligible to come with me before July 1st or if I should hold on to them until just before I leave? With a few exceptions most of my firearms are accompanied by "hi cap" mags under the new laws and therefore I would be unable to sell those mags with the firearms. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated. Also for the record, I'm not just going to give them all to one of you for safe keeping [ROFL2]

I don't think the market is going to get any better than what we'll see as July 1st approaches so I say dump them.

agreed, going to be a sellers market until July in state. after that you can only sell them out of state and the nationwide panic will probably have continued to subside.

Maintain a storage locker here and keep 'em for the day when you've missed 'em enough to return.

serialize the mags (have to research, but pretty sure a label will satisfy) put the firearms in individual trusts, get the trust notarized, then just add the buyer to the trust and they become the primary on the trust, and can then take you off the trust. The trust still owns the firearms, and there was no transfer of ownership.

You can sell magazine repair kits In state. Once 7/1 rolls around why would i pay $15-2K for a Used Ar when i could buy on at my LGS for less. Hell wallyworld has them, occasionally for $1K
Swap the guns you cannot take for revolvers.

How are you allowed to own guns here? Or if youre allowed to own guns here, how are you allowed to own guns there?

I thought both countries wouldnt allow non citizens to own guns, and you must be a citizen of one or the other. And surely importing guns into australia is damn near impossible?

I think ill probably end up picking up quite a few bolt guns before I leave and bringing them in. It's crazy expensive to buy them over there.

One other thing, if I have ITAR regulated items, I'm assuming they can't come with me either. Anyone have experience with this?

Sell in June when the panic is in full force and use the funds to buy "Australia friendly" weapons to take with you. [Awesom]

I have dual citizenship, technically more if you want to get into it. When moving to Australia I will become a permanent resident at which point I can bring in my weapons after aquiring the correct paperwork. Everytime I fill out a background check I fill in the section asking about dual citizenships and have never had an issue. I've also run it buy multiple sources and they all say I'm good to go.

Nope. I saw a guy from Mexico that didn't speak a lick of English buy a gun once. He was a non-citizen but somehow he was still eligible to buy a firearm because he resided here. Or something to that effect. I'm sure an FFL could clarify.

Good thing no one paid for that advice. [pileoshit]

Similar opinions have already been shared, but I say find as many firearms as you can legally own in Aus, and barter. Bolt guns, revolvers, small semi pistols. An S&W shield in 9mm was the first thing that came to mind when you listed your criteria.

If I could bring a crate of mosin nagants and 20 spam cans of ammo with me, I'd be living in australia right now. I cant own shit there though. Citizenship means something there.

I can't carry or use handguns for anything other than target shooting so a Shield might be a little small for what I'm looking for but Ill definitely start coming up with a list.

Sell them all to me now.. You don't want to have to continue to worry about that kind of stuff. Let me take it off your hands for you -- put your mind at rest.

well other than the criticism, what is invalid about it? If it is wrong I would like to know so I am not operating on the concept that it is viable.

Luckily I was born into my citizenship in both countries so I got lucky in that area.

That is incorrect. You do not need to bea citizen to own guns here.

Here's a question that might belong somewhere else, but how hard would it be to convert a 45 1911 to 38 super. I have a Dan Wesson Valor and I'd love to bring it but I can't have a firearm in a caliber equal to or greater than 40.

Sell the upper and buy a 22 conversion kit for it.

I purchased my first gun when I was a foreign student here. As long as you are legal resident of US by Fed standard and CO resident by State law then you can.

well other than the criticism, what is invalid about it? If it is wrong I would like to know so I am not operating on the concept that it is viable. Wrong on so many levels. Go to the library and check out "American Jurisprudence". Look up words like possession, transfer, intent, reasonable man test. Or, ask an attorney.

You think that if you buy a kilo of heroin but put it in a trust that would be okay too since you don't "posses" it. There are definitions in the CRS that you would run afoul of as well. It may sound "slick" in your mind, but unless you are a wealthy liberal, the difinition of the word "is" will not be open for interpretation.
