I'm new to AKs and haven't been able to find much ammo.

What I have been able to find has been mostly Tulammo and Wolf.
Now I've heard the AKs will just eat them up with no problems but wanted to get some more first hand feedback.

Are there brands that are preferred?
Is there a difference between the steel cased like Tulammo and Wolf?
Are there brands to avoid?
Is brass even necessary for an AK if you don't intend to reload?

Thanks!

Its a AK. Buy the cheapest shit you can find and that it will shoot

I've never noticed any real difference in any of the steel cased stuff. I stocked up on Golden Tiger when I found it on sale for a good price. I like the fact that it is sealed on both ends. Otherwise , buy what ever is cheapest.

Mine prefered FMJ over JHP until I had Bert at BP Tactical go through it and give it some love. Now it will shoot anything I can put in the mag. :)

my Ak's have shot everything I have tried through them. I personally like Wolf but I can't say it performs any better or worse. In this day any ammo is good so if you can get it I would shoot that. I did see an AK once that did not like hollow point ammo but that's the only time every other AK I have ever owned or shot ran them fine.

Mine run great with 122-154gr,sp,hp and FMJ.

Honestly shoot whatever you can get your hands on.

Thanks for the Feedback guys!

I got my hands on 1000 rounds of Wolf today for $379 out the door.
I know that's not the greatest price, but since I only had about 600 rounds before that, I had to get it since I just picked up a second AK.

yugo m67 is the most accurate for mine and i also like golden tiger since its true lacquer and sealed mil spec, also golden tiger is fmjbt not just fmj so that might lend to slightly better accuracy at range

I also have had no problem feeding the beast whatever I could get my hands on. Wolf, tulammo, Romanian hot shot, russian surplus, the list goes on and on

My WASR eats it all. I mostly feed it Wolf, since that was (at one time) the most commonly available.

Like it has been said-get it cheap stack it deep!!
But if you find any Yugo brass case jump on it!.Good ammo,a bit expensive now but you'll be amazed at the accuracy you can get out of an AK with it..

I know for a fact an ak47 can chamber and fire 556 it wont cycle though. They're not real picky.

some say lacquer will gum up a chamber but I havent experienced it
some say yugo brass corrosive witth thrash your barrel but I havent experienced that either
everything I've seen and run tells me they run better dirty than clean
hose them down with WD-40 when you're done and run them again and again and again

i've left ak's uncleaned for weeks after shooting yugo m67 (not on purpose) and i have never seen the slightest signs of corrosion. we are so dry here that corrosive ammo for the most point doesn't apply like everywhere else. i have never cleaned the gas tube on my ak74 and after thousands of rounds it has never corroded

+1

a few other good ones I didn't see mentioned are Tulammo (http://www.gunbot.net/go/73441) and Brown Bear (http://www.gunbot.net/go/52402)

Tula and wolf are one in the same, I was curious to try the relatively new wolf from the Ukraine until I saw that the newest stuff isn't lacquer coated anymore I like golden tiger and klimovsk or whatever the other good stuff is

I've been told the Bulgarian brass case ammo are the most accurate. But I hadn't seen any online since 2012.

I've become somewhat numb to the the stories of AK's being buried in mud but still functioning - it's just repeated so often as to not have much impact on me anymore. However, the notion that they will chamber/fire 556 is downright impressive!

Now I want to try some experiments with sandbags & string :)

Accuracy with 5.56 is about the same as 7.62 too. Just kidding... sort of.

Ha! My AKs' grouping seem to increase by 1" per 25 yard or worse.

More key-holing and I'm pretty sure it looses some fps but I still wouldn't want to catch one.

Some of the Romanian surplus from the late 90's I would describe the bullets as roundish still fired.

One of my friends is convinced the guns do better when you feed them ammo from the country that built them. I.E. maadi's shooting Egyptian surplus.
