KUSA - Denver Police evacuated House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from the Grand Hyatt hotel in Denver Saturday after a man carrying two long rifles and two handguns walked into the lobby of the hotel.

Denver Police spotted the man, Joseph Calanhini, 29, of Pinedale, Wyo., walking through the hotel Saturday around 4 p.m. He is not a registered guest at the hotel, according to Grand Hyatt General Manger Ed Bucholtz.

Calanhini told police he is in Denver on business and is planning a safari to Africa. Police say Calanhani had just had two of his rifles scoped at a nearby gun shop and carried them in cases through the hotel lobby, where Pelosi is staying, according to Lt. Ron Saunier, Denver Police Spokesman.

"We don't know why he was walking through our hotel," said Bucholtz.

Calanhini was legally carrying the long rifles, but did not have licenses for the two handguns, according to police. He was charged with unlawful carrying of weapons, a misdemeanor. Calanhini is being held on $10,000 bond at the Denver City Jail.

Denver Police swept Calanhini's vehicle and towed it from the hotel, according to Lt. Saunier. Meanwhile, police moved House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D - California) out of the hotel until Calanhini was taken into custody.

"The Speaker was never in any danger. And she appreciates the quick and professional response of the police," said Brendon Daly, Pelosi spokesman.

Calanhini is the first person to be arrested that is DNC-related.

We were a few short blocks from that hotel a couple weeks ago and yep, I had a pistol with us & yep, it was loaded.

Would I be a criminal and arrested for walking through the hotel now even though I have a Wyoming CCW that's honored in Colorado? Since when do you have to have a "license" for a handgun in Colorado???

Who gives a crap if he's a registered guest at the hotel, could it be he was going INTO the hotel to check in???

Why impound/tow his car?

Best question of all, why the fuzz would ya evacuate pelosi, yet ya leave all the other guests in place, would it not be better to just shelter in place, or is this all something Denver PD made up for the drama and to "look" good

This is an insult to everyone who respects the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

What I really want to know is what license he didn't have. The only thing that would even make sense is if he was carrying concealed with a CCW, but knowing Denver the police have no clue of what it takes to legally carry a firearm and assume anyone who even thinks about a firearm is a criminal.

I sent an email to NRA-ILA.

How much money does this state make on hunting? I mean seriously, if the story is true, what an embarrassment to the state.

How are you supposed to carry rifles and handguns on a trip if not in a locked container as the article states?

Just wrong IMO

Mayor Chickenlooper is just the bestest! [Love1]

I know I feel safer.[Stooge]

It's nice to see that the DNC with the cooperation of the City & County is doing everything in their power to piss off the populace. Just wait until they shut down the interstate highways at rush hour. It'll make us all proud to be a part of these shenanigans.

You know I can see people be a little jumpy...maybe even the hotel offering to secure the weapons in the safe but throwing the guy in jail...COME ON!!!! Either something huge is missing from this story or DPD just screwed up big time!! As I understand it even if this guy had pistols in his luggage that isn't illegal as they would not be available for use quickly or on his person. Honestly even if the pistol was loaded or whatever I doubt they could stick him with anything. They had no reason to search him anyway. He was not breaking any laws to draw attention or warrant a search.

They don't care. They'll throw anybody that they feel like in the slammer. When the convention is over you'll get the, "Oops. Our bad. An honest mistake, we're just trying to be careful."

Hmmm. Sounds a lot like what China did to people during the Olympics that might have embarassed the communist government.

WTF? His handguns were not registered there is no such thing in CO or Denver. My guess is the media twisting things and reporting BS. I go in to Denver every day with guns they arrest my a$$ and they will damn sure wish they had'nt when my lawyer gets done with them.

No I do not go to downtown and at this time would rather be soaked in gasoline and lit on fire than do so.

Ok, heres the real story:

My fiancee was one of the arresting officers, so I MIGHT be speaking with a bit of knowledge on the subject.

Guy walks into the hotel with cased rifles. Gets questioned by the clerk who's been told to report any weapons he sees. Guy gets contacted by the PD to make sure he's not a threat. Guy is carrying a concealed pistol ON HIS PERSON WITHOUT A CCW PERMIT. Guy gets cuffed and stuffed for said misdemeanor.

Its not hard to get a CCW permit in either state if you've got a clean record. He waltzed into a dignatary hotel rolling along a gun case and packing without a permit. The decision to take him in for a misdemeanor CCW on the part of the DPD was far more courteous than what the Alphabet Soups wanted to do (from what Heather has told me).

Failed to obtain the permit he needed.
Failed to properly maintain a discrete profile.
Failed to gather reasonable intel on his destination.

Epic fail on the perps side. My main departure is this developing theory that the DPD were 'fascists'.
