Chancellor's Corner: An update on concealed carry and CU-Boulder http://www.colorado.edu/sites/default/files/styles/medium-feature-image/public/features/article/ChancellorDiStefano%20Feature_4.jpg

As I know many of you are interested in the status of permitted concealed weapons on campus, I want to update you on recent actions in the state legislature. This past Friday, the Senate ended further consideration of a bill to ban concealed weapons on college campuses across Colorado. The bill’s sponsor, Senator Rollie Heath, pulled the bill because the votes to support it were not there. As a result, both the law and the campus policy on concealed carry remain in effect. Any changes to the law would have to come through a future state legislative process.
Just as a reminder, in 2011 the Colorado Supreme Court determined that the University of Colorado Board of Regents lacks the authority to ban weapons from campus. Therefore, the law allows those people who possess a Colorado concealed-carry permit to carry a concealed weapon, including on campus. Carrying a permitted, concealed weapon is not, in and of itself, an illegal, disruptive or threatening act.
As with any other law or court ruling, CU-Boulder is obligated to fully comply with all elements of the State’s conceal carry policies. The CU- Boulder housing regulations do not permit the storing of weapons in residence halls, with certain exceptions. CU-Boulder also does not allow weapons into ticketed public events and performances on campus. You can find more information about the law and campus implementation at the following website: police.colorado.edu/services/weapons-campus (http://police.colorado.edu/services/weapons-campus).

BUllshit...
They had the votes to pass HB-1226 .. hell they passed the rest of em .

HB-1226 was killed to get Salazers and Hudaks comments out of the news cycle which could have harmed the other bills as congress critters scattered to keep from smelling like the shit those two spewed.

Betting CSU won't mention it.. it won't be an issue either way, since the only ones that really know/care are the ones that have their CCW.

I still think it's wrong that they ban guns from "ticketed events and performances". What in the law gives them the right to do that? NOTHING. Same for the housing, though I think that's less of an issue due to the fractional percentage of people over the age of 21 who live in on-campus housing to begin with.

Their "logic" on their ability to ban guns from events is no different than on anything else, it's just that they haven't been sued on it yet. Makes steam come out of my ears.

CSU doesn't allow firearms in it's dorms either. OR do any if not most .mil bases.

Aren't most ticketed events, outside of campus, gun-free events as well? Avs, Nuggets, Rockies and Broncos games are all "no weapons allowed". Anything at the Pepsi Center as well as [I think] Red Rocks is also "no weapons allowed". There are a few ticketed events that don't have that policy... but most that I've seen do.

I'm not saying I agree with it... just saying it is like most other sporting and concert events around town.

But maybe you are getting at... since they are a public school... they don't have the right to make gun-free zones out of ticketed events? That brings up a good question. Since many arenas, fields and stadiums are paid for at least in part by bonds and taxes... I wonder if it could be fought to make it where you can't turn them into gun-free zones. After all... since the public paid a big chunk for those venues... aren't they in a way partially public owned and/or city owned? We should look into that. If it isn't "private" property... do they have the right to turn it into a gun-free zone?

All they can do is ask you to leave. If you don't leave, then legal issues may arise. Concealed means concealed.

That's exactly what I'm getting at.

The law is clear that the university does not have the right to restrict legal concealed carry, but they are doing it anyway.

I also think that any public place should not be allowed to prohibit concealed carry, but that would require changing the law. Places like malls, retail, grocery, sporting events, anywhere that's a public place should not be created as self-defense-free zones. That's a different issue though as the law allows such prohibitions, although at least it's a good law with minimal repercussions.
