Where I work I created and instruct a police honor guard and we do small ceremonies for the town or the police department such as posting the colors at awards ceremonies. We also have beautiful M1 Garands on loan from the US Military.
The other day, 6 of us, including me, went to another city building to practice for an upcoming ceremony. 4 of the 6 people were wearing police uniforms as they are patrol officers and arrived in fully marked patrol units in the front of the building. The other two were in civilian clothes, one is a detective, wearing a badge and gun, the other was off duty and showing up to practice.
We entered the building and advised the person at the front desk that we were going to use a room in the facility for honor guard practice. Two of the six people had the M1 Garands. This person then proceeded to say, jokingly, "I will only unlock this door because you pointed that big rifle at me." I wasn't joking...and will probably get a complaint...when I said, "Just to be clear, no one pointed any guns at you at all." I don't like it when people say that stuff especially people who technically have the same employer as I do because they don't realize what can happen with statements like that.
A short time later, as the honor guard was practicing in this room, the director of said facility came up to us and told us that we caused quite a scare because no one knew who we were...as if the uniforms and cars couldn't have given it away. On top, I was annoyed because the rifles we had were M1's with blank firing adapters. I know that people don't know what that is or know the difference...but this certainly isn't the demon rifle that has been in the news. And the extremely shiny wood stock could be a huge clue that these rifles aren't taken to the range.
Thanks for listening...I'm just annoyed with everyone.

America's unfamiliarity and fear of guns will only get worse.

Sad commentary...but I see it all the time. Even with people who should know better.

Was a time in America, when walking into a public building, or even in public, with a firearm would only elicit interested comments and some gun-related conversation unless you were menacing people with it.

That was a time when individuals were more responsible, resilient, and self-reliant. Talking about this with a friend the other day; we discussed the different mentality of city vs. country living, and how being way out there breeds a sense of responsibility and self reliance. Conversely, I think people in cities have more of a mentality that relies upon others to do things. Maybe it can be boiled down to "gimme" vs bootstrapping.

So true. America has a responsibility problem. People always looking for others to blame, and keep doing so even if they can't find an actual scapegoat to blame for their failures - just generalize it to "the man" or "society". Shit goes wrong, doesn't matter if it's your fault... it's probably still is your responsibility to fix it if it affects you and your family.

This would still scare these people. It's got something that resembles a pistol grip. Could be worse, though if it was all black.

makes you wonder how many people would go septic from a 1 inch cut on their hand...
Though I can see it now, you will be asked to transport the rifles in a case. Makes me miss my home town, 4500 people over 2/3s of them were either veterans, active military, or family of one or the other. No one would have even batted an eye.

Well I scored a lot higher than I thought I would...thanks.
And an update, my lieutenant pulled me aside today and said, "I heard you guys gave the people at **** quite a scare. He was laughing so I know he is aware of how stupid it sounds. But seriously, do these idiots realize what kind of trouble I could be in by making a statement of "They pointed rifles at me?" My supervisor told me not to worry and I am not really worried, just annoyed. I wanted to punch the lady and say, "we work for the same people, you idiot!"

No problem. [LOL]
Having a firearm and brandishing a firearm are two different things. The fact it went beyond "her" station is just ridiculous. Glad to see your lieutenant saw the stupid.

America has motards teaching in classroom, we have motards doing social work, we have motards running things that should be run with common sense folks. My father was not a shooter or a hunter, his bro-in-law taught me hutning and firearm safety. I have had a rifle rack in my room at 12 years old, nothing stupid or ignorant ever happened. I was a city boy but was raised with common sense.

Sad; more indications that progressiveness is turning America into the socialist paradise that they want. Keep people from understanding guns, to make sure they fear them. And demonize anyone you see carrying one; they must be one of "those loonies". The state our country is in is deplorable.
Give it a month. You know you were dealing with well trained sheep when a new city policy goes into effect; "No open carrying of long guns in city facilities, unless there is an actual emergency. All long guns must be carried in a case and concealed."
Five or ten years later, no one will remember why this rule exists and administrators and citizens will believe that they need to vet individuals through a background check before granting them permission to carry concealed. Five or ten years later, an ordinance will be passed that no one will be permitted to carry concealed without a specially issued permit. The government will charge you a few hundred dollars and make you wait 90 days for this permit.
Five years after that, the carrying of any gun, either open or concealed, into any government facility by anyone other than a trained law enforcement professional will be completely banned.
Five years later, people will call for the ban of high capacity magazines and guns that look scary. It's for the children.
Everyone will call these "sensible" gun regulation and no one will remember that it started out with a few cops carrying non-functioning, parade rifles. Many people won't care that they have lost the rights they were born with. They don't own guns and they don't understand why anyone would want to have something like that in their home anyway. Even if the have those dangerous guns, they know that the gun laws are "sensible" and they would never carry a gun outside their house anyway.
Incrementalism or boiling frogs, one degree at a time. Whatever doesn't pass this year will be attempted next year. The longer a law exists, the less likely it will be challenged. Just call it "sensible" and everything will be just fine.
Be safe.

It is the same in other places. You would think that people that work for the DOD understand what we do. I have heard many comments but a good one was a couple of years ago after we hired a bunch of new staff and many had no connection to the Military at all.
She mentioned that she had to stop for a bunch of troops that were crossing the road. She said "They all had camo paint on and were carrying GUNS. It really creeped me out" .[Bang][panic]

Jerry, there is a recent photo in the "funny pictures" thread that might make your staff feel more comfortable dealing with "men" in uniform. I would post a link, but that photograph creeps me out. [LOL]
