I've been up there a few times in the past few weeks after work (4:30) and it wasn't bad at all.
I think its the weekends that get a out of hand, at least if you go later in the day......

wasnt bad, wasnt paying too much attention to the time but when we got there there was only one guy on the rifle side, we had the pistol side to our self for about an hour.

I might have to check it out again. I haven't been there for several years because
(1) More and more dangerous/careless nuts were going there who either didn't know range safety at all or eyed my guns just a bit too closely (ended up having to leave someone armed with the guns when I went down-range to adjust the targets).
and
(2) Folks cleaned out their homes of garbage to shoot up and never bothered to clean it up befire they left.

I totally agree with on range etiquette, seems like some have the slightest clue and IMO shouldn't own guns.
I went on a Saturday a few weeks ago, on one of the shorter ranges we counted a total of 13 people. One shooting an AK over his head like you see in the movies....now that makes me nervous.
Went this past Saturday early in the morning and it was totally fine, started to get crowded around 1pm.....
There is a lot of trash up there no doubt, I did see a few guys cleaning up the ranges though....thats always good to see.
I don't mind shooting up there as its close & a convenience but if I found another place to go I'd probably go there on weekends.

Cheers

I finally just decided to spend the few bucks and go to Dranon Arm's (aka Dragon Man's) off of Curtis Road and Hwy 94. It's an easier drive than going to Rampart (actually use less gas) so it's almost a break even deal.

It gets a little crowded by 11AM on the weekends but it's safer and a lot less hassle.

Like I said in a previous post though, I my give Rampart another shot for a change in scenery.

if the dragon man wasnt such a prick, i might feel better about giving him my cash, but he is, so i dont... lol

That was always my take on the guy too, but the last 2 times I've been there he has been very friendly and cordial.

Rampart isn't bad during the week (most of the time). The only problem I've had up there lately was a guy offering unsolicited advice about shot placement. ("If you shoot into the lower abdomen instead of centermass you'll have a good blood trail to follow" [Eek3]).

Hmmm, I have heard some people giving others advice/tips on shooting techniques, but never heard shot placement yet.
One guy gave me about 20 ballistic 223 rounds, he didn't have a 223 caliber so he passed em on to me.....

I know you used to be allowed to shoot up at Saint Peters Dome, anybody know if thats still the case? I might go have a look in the next few weeks.

St. Peter's Dome has been closed to shooting for at least 10 years.

Hmmm. It sounds familiar. Is it along Rampart Range Road? As I recall, I went hiking around there about 12 years ago.

St Peters Dome is up off of Old Stage Rd.

Closed huh, yeah I haven't been up there since 96.... guess I won't be heading that way.

Going through some old posts and saw this one.

I go to Rampart every once in a while. I totally agree that it is much better to go early and on weekdays. I made the mistake of going there once on a Saturday afternoon with the wife. I will never make that mistake again. Between the mall ninjas and gangstas, I thought the range was about to become two-way.

As for Saint Peter's Dome, it's a shame it is closed to shooting. I live just off Old Stage Road, so it sure would be convenient. To the best of my knowledge, you can shoot within the confines of a National Forest, as long as you obey all the rules, however, there is no place in Pike National Forest to shoot inside of El Paso County. I wonder if Teller County has some places to shoot farther up Old Stage Road?

I've seen people shooting up off of Forrest Road 379 more than once and a guy that I know at work goes up there to shoot. I'm not sure its allowed but I have never seen any problems up there.

I've seen people up there this summer shooting......I go Mtn Biking up in that area, Jones Park, Cpt Jacks up that way.
