View Full Version : I tried to love it....
But the M&P just isn't wanting my love.
So, I recently acquired a S&W M&P compact in 9mm and took it out to the range today for the first time. Messing with it (unloaded) at the house I really liked the way it felt and pointed and didn't mind the trigger too much. But at the range today I couldn't hit anything with it.
Anyone have any pointers for me? I really like everything about it except for the fact that I can't hit anything with it.
Thanks.
Send it to me for advanced tactical training. New guns just don't know how to shoot anymore. Send along with 500 rounds of ammo and I'll train it, and return it knowing how to hit the freakin
target.

Get closer?
Get closer?
If I got any closer I'd have to stand behind the target.

This could be a viable option.
Focus on the sights more.
Go back to the fundamentals.
Apex trigger parts. I have one with, and one without, and it is very noticeable.
Side-by-side at a range, I chose the M&P over a Glock 19 for everyday carry based on how it felt in my hand and how well as how it put holes in paper.

Probably spot on with this advice. Although I was doing OK with my Glock.

I tried the compact. Wasn't for me.
I love me the full size M&P though!!! [Love4]

The M&P has a slightly shorter length between the beavertail and the trigger. This is a critical dimension and will probably cause you to have to pull your trigger finger out and away from the grip more to get the ball of your index finger on the center of the trigger bow. If you can't break the trigger and not move the front sight while dry firing, then there is a trigger press problem. If you can and still are seeing sporadic inaccuracy, you are not taking a hard front sight focus when shooting.
It took me a while to be able to hit what I wanted with my M&40c, and I still have to do my part. The biggest thing for me was slowing down and not jerking the trigger. IDPA matches intermixed with an occasional range trip focusing on accuracy is what really helped flip the switch for me.

I installed an Apex Duty/Carry kit and an Apex sear in my newest Pro M&P. The difference is unbelievable. Takes all of the grittiness out of the typical M&P take up. Lightens the final break and gives you a superb reset. I remember poo-pooing the Apex kits at some time in the past. I was wrong.

Amen, an m&p with apex parts is tits. They are unbearable without, in my opinion.

front sight, press. and make sure the pad of you index finger is on the trigger so your not yanking the trigger back.
I have to admit. I don't really like my M&P 9 either. I guess I should sell it. The Glocks just fit me better.

I know im a little crazy but I didn't really enjoy shooting my m&p until 1000+ rounds. Some say the gun finally breaks in around there, some say muscle memory and etc. You be the judge.
I have M&Ps with and without the Apex parts. They are nice, and a must on a competition M&P in my opinion. But the stock trigger is plenty usable and accurate with practice and good technique. There is also the connector bending mod for the kitchen table gun-smiths, just make sure not to overdo it and to thoroughly test it before using as a defensive pistol.
I also like the M&P's with and without the Apex kit and either way they are great. Its definitely a great platform, Ray maybe try some of the different backstraps and see if a bigger or smaller one helps you out.
Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm going to try to find some time in the next couple of weeks to get out and really focus on what I'm doing. The darn thing feels too good in my hand and points too nicely for me to not shoot it well.
Shoot at something that will force you to take your time. For me it was bowling pins at further than 10 yards.
OK. I ordered some Apex stuff for it. I'll get it put in before my next trip to the range.
The striker looks to be a MIM part to me. That kind of disappoints me. Anyone know where I can get an aftermarket striker of some sort?
Update.
Took it back to the range Sunday and put 150 rounds through it. Really payed attention to my technique and focused on the front sight. Much better results. I blame a few of my bad shots on the horrific winds. A couple of them I pulled. A couple I lost focus a bit. But most were on target.
Looks like it's a keeper.
Now it's just the goofball behind the trigger that could use some work.

Nice work, way to stick with it. It's a great gun. Try it in a steel shoot or IPSC/IDPA.

Nah. I'd probably bring the Glock out for that kind of stuff. Why handicap myself with a compact model? I need all the help I can get.

My M&P was night and day with the Apex parts installed. I didn't do the trigger spring and I actually might throw it in to see the difference.
I just did the sear. The springs are all stock. I did do a little polishing with some 2000 grit paper and some jeweler's rouge.
