View Full Version : Murphy's Law - I HATE Murphy

My fiancee has had a car loan with her bank when she got in a terrible accident 3.5yrs ago and needed to buy a new car. She paid nearly a year ahead in an attempt to pay it off before our Wedding in October. We've done this by making payments larger than the normal each month.
We got a letter in the mail from our bank, saying that our next payment would be pure interest because we've paid so far ahead. I call to ask what it was all about, they said they were going to bring our due date back to 6/2013 instead of 4/2014, to prevent us from having to pay lots of interest. I got mad, said fuck them, and then we paid off the fucking car loan last night (nearly $3k).
Naturally, Murphy would stick his head in immediately after doing that, right? [Mad]
Tried drilling a hole in my safe this morning, even went out and bought some new, titanium drill bits to do it. Trying to slip an extension cord through the safe to get power inside for my Golden Rod. About 5min into drilling (using cutting fluid and not pushing hard at all), the fucking drill literally BURST INTO FLAMES! Burned my hand, drill is dead, so I said fuck this, and went to work on getting my evaporative cooler running for the summer.
Checked the bearings on the fan, and they're so gummed/mucked up, the fan barely spins if you spin it by hand. Decided to replace the bearings. Got one off, but the other side that has the v-belt flywheel, is so rusted and corroded on, I can't get the v-belt flywheel off without replacing the entire shaft. Can't get those locally.
While on the roof, the City rolled up to shut off my water. I went out and talked to the guy, he said it was an EMERGENCY SHUT OFF, because we have a serious water leak somewhere. Went around the fucking house to turn off all faucets and toilets. Back outside to turn the meter on again, and water is still shooting into our house like a faucet is completely open. Turned the water off again and called the contractors to come out.
So, long story short FUCK YOU MURPHY YOU LOUSY PIECE OF SHIT!
In closing, this rant is definitely a 2/10, not enough curse words. I'm so upset and worried right now, I can't even think of the words to use. On the plus side, our Home Warranty that was included with the house purchase, is still active for another month, so with any luck, this will be covered or at least part of it will be.
Oh yea, and I scraped my knuckle just to top it all off.
How's YOUR tuesday going?
Better than yours :)
In all seriousness that blows

Don't want to say how my Tuesday is, might murphy it all up. Yours is fucked up, sorry to hear all that happened so fast. I think we've all had days like that. I know I have. Keep your head on straight and everything has a way of working themselves out. It could be worse, youi know? Like being a citizen in Syria or something?
All of us here are getting our gun rights raped right in front of us potentially making us criminals. There's that I guess!

And now you just jinxed youself [LOL]
Seriously, it sucks big time. Hoping its not a major leak or causing structural damage to the house.

Exactly, don't say anything lol. We made it 1yr of home ownership before we had this problem. Our home warranty (included by seller in our purchase of the house) expires on 3/31/2013. I just called and spoke with them, they said it'll be a $50 deductible and once we get the diagnosis, the contractor calls to give them more information on the problem and then are given a, hopefully, "proceed" on repairs. They said because I started the claim today, as long as it is covered under our policy, it will be covered. Now, to pull out the pamphlet and find out exactly what they cover. With the way today is going, it will be the ONE water leak problem that isn't covered. Praying it is covered though.

Good point. I think I'd rather take the water leak over my gun rights. :(
Hopefully tomorrow will be better

Bag it. Go to the range!
Too late, already downing a beer. Additionally, gotta stick around and wait for the contractor to show up and diagnose the problem.
But, the range is LONG overdue, so I might definitely have to head there this week.
Got a sprinkler system? Is the supply valve shut off and system drained/blown out? If something freezes and busts and the supply is still on, that'll bring the major suck.

Yes, but its been purged/capped because the previous owners xeriscaped the front/rear yards (plus its the desert). The contractors are here now:
Its either the water line from the street to the house, from the house edge to the inside of the house, or from the street-to-house Tee'd off to the sprinkler.
If 1: Replace and done.
If 2: Cut off water line at house, route new line up into attic and drop into garage (per my request so we can get our water heater in the garage too, because the water heater overflow drain through the foundation is completely rusted shut, so if it fails, we'd be screwed and all of our walls/carpets would be destroyed).
If 3: Decide if we want to remove sprinkler system from the yard or not, it would be nice, but we wouldn't have a huge back yard of grass, so any grass we put down in the future could easily be watered with a hose.
I hold to the sayings of one of Murphy's contemporaries...

At least in Syria our Government is giving them guns and not taking them away:)

So, they found the leak, it was in the front yard. The copper line just punctured itself for no reason, walls were extremely thin.
They recommend we replace the entire water line from street to house.
Home warranty doesn't cover it, because it is outside the house walls. Fucking scam artists.

I've got excellent luck. That wasn't the only leak, they did a temporary fix and found that its still leaking water somewhere. Continuing to dig up our yard, calling their manager to have him come over and talk things over with me.

Murphy's been swingin' his Little Johnson around our place also. Wish I could find the little peckerwood and poor some sulphuric acid up his urethra.

Well well well, finally a good day!
Got a 100% on my Dynamics exam, average was something like a 60%, so thats freaking awesome!
Also had a friend tell me that he replaced his entire water line from street to house a year ago, by himself and he even offered to help me with it.
Breaking the entire install into parts, the hardest part will be cutting through the sidewalk (up against our house by garage door) and then drilling into the garage floor to bring the water line up into the garage. Sounds like all we'll need is a good stretch of PEX pipe, a couple sharkbites and bam, saved us $1-2k that the contractor would probably charge us (getting the quote tomorrow for that full install).
Definitely seems doable, especially since we wouldn't have to cut into the water lines at the street or in the house until we get the rest of the pipe laid, so even if laying the new pipe takes a few days (doubt the trench digging and running line would take more than 1 full day of hard work), connecting the lines will only take an hour at most.
Definitely feeling much better today than yesterday. Still have to figure out what I'm going to do about my evaporative cooler, but it looks like I'll be buying a new HAMMER DRILL this time (those who remember my previous post about installing my gun safe should laugh at this) to replace my current drill that is now in a melted pile of plastic.

Its done!
I started digging the trench on Monday at 9am, got 20ft done (2ft deep, 1ft wide) and couldn't move so I called it a day at 5:30pm. The next day, I finished the last 4ft of trench and made sure I had all the parts necessary. On Wednesday, a friend came over and helped me cut through the concrete sidewalk by the house, and hammer drill through the garage floor to route the pipe up. We broke for lunch at noon and by 3pm, we had the line fully routed and connected. We spent the next 2hrs filling in the trench with dirt. I spent most of today running another hose bib to the back of the house, connecting it too, then insulating all exposed pex in the attic, and finally, finishing moving around the xeriscaping rocks in the front yard to cover most of the evidence that I did anything up there. I have to say, it looks pretty awesome!
In total, I spent $160 on tool rentals, about $100 on parts, and $125 to buy myself a new drill (not necessary, but a good payment to myself). The original quote was for $1080.56, so by my rough estimates, I believe I saved around $700. Not too shabby! Granted, I can't move a single muscle, and I found muscles in my body that are sore that I didn't even know existed. No injuries, except for one gashed thumb knuckle, which I keep opening that wound painfully.
The worst part was digging the trench. It wasn't just dirt. It was mostly rock with dirt mixed in between. I don't mean pebbles, I mean baseball/softball and the occasional basketball sized rocks! My main tool of choice for the trench was a pick axe.
Great workout though!!
