View Full Version : Assault-weapons ban nixed from bill
http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/19/17371231-congress-assault-weapons-ban-nixed-from-bill
Whither assault weapons ban: “Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said on Monday that a controversial assault weapons ban will not be part of a Democratic gun bill that was expected to reach the Senate floor next month,” Politico notes. “After a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday, a frustrated Feinstein said she learned that the bill she sponsored — which bans 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines — wouldn’t be part of a Democratic gun bill to be offered on the Senate floor. Instead, it can be offered as an amendment. But its exclusion from the package makes what was already an uphill battle an almost certain defeat.”
Menendez watch: “Three women were paid to falsely claim in videotaped interviews that they had sex for money with U.S. Senator Robert Menendez in the Dominican Republic, a spokesman for the police said today,” AP reports. “The women, whose claims generated media attention in the United States, were hired by a Dominican attorney to make the videotaped statements, spokesman Maximo Baez told reporters. Two of the women received about $425 and the other was paid about $300, he said.”
National Journal: “Unlike some other scandal-wracked politicians like Anthony Weiner, Eric Massa, or Eliot Spitzer, DesJarlais hasn’t become an outcast at all. Republican leaders haven’t punished him. He still holds positions on the Agriculture and, yes, the Oversight and Government Reform committees. Even more glaring: He’s getting fundraising assistance on Tuesday from six influential colleagues, including three committee chairmen (GOP Reps. Darrell Issa of California, John Kline of Minnesota, and Frank Lucas of Oklahoma) and two potential Senate candidates (Kline and Rep. Tom Price of Georgia). Responding to calls asking why they would want to associate with a scandal-plagued congressman, several praised DesJarlais' conduct in office.”

Maybe hickenlooper will see this and realize he is being thrown under the bus by bloomberg and friends.

much more likely that Reid is going to see what the fallout in CO really is before pushing. If there is minimal fallout expect it to return with added fury.

He's too starry-eyed with ambition and dreams of grandeur to notice.

Agreed. They are waiting to see how we react to the new legislation here in Colorado. If we swing back to an all red state, they will know it is unpopular and may result in election losses (which is all they truly care about anyway). They can afford to lose Colorado for presidential elections, our 9 electoral votes don't make that big of a difference. I am convinced we are the test state and it is truly important to fight this new legislation as hard as we possibly can.

I beleive that is a very accurate assessment.
That is very good news. Looks like DC is taking their cues from Colorado. Now, we have to put Pro-2A lawmakers into office in 2014, and stop this assault on "assault weapons."

Spot on. Even after the governor signs the bill we need to go "New York" on them and refuse to accept these unconstitutional laws and not comply with them. This fight needs to continue until these laws are repealed.

The problem is that like in the movie Inception, the idea has been planted in the brains of the masses that guns are bad and they need to be banned. No coincidence either, as this is a well planned strategy on the anti-gunners part. That want to see how hard they can poke the bear before it bites back. Another mass shooting will happen, Feinstein, Bloomberg, the media and their cronies will say "I told you so", more and more folks will start to believe the idea that "guns are bad" and need to be banned and more and more anti-gun legislation is passed.
Unfortunately, I think this will ultimately play out in one of two ugly scenarios: A) the anti-gunners will continue this process of death by a thousand cuts until we've bled out or B) citizens revolt

The idea has always been there, it has just been beat down by common sense and civil discourse. This is the age of the internet and mass distributed misinformation. Many of us have been hung up on crazy things like ethics and the truth, which in this age gives us the upperhand morally, but significantly impedes our ability to fight the media juggernaut.

Yup, they're definitely still going to go after mag limits at the very least.

If they go National Mag Limit, it is a win. It will get challenged and die. All that does is cost organizations like the NRA a whole bunch of money, and hurts the firearm manufacturers for a couple years.
It won't hold up, but it will inconvenience.
Not good news.
It will still be in there. This is just a political maneuver to ensure the bill gets debated on the floor.
From: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57575182/dems-shelving-assault-weapons-ban-for-now/
Citing the minimal support for legislation that would ban assault weapons, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said today that he would leave the proposal out of the gun violence bill he'll bring to the Senate floor. Instead, the assault weapons ban will be offered as an amendment to the bill, along with several other less popular ideas.
"I have said time and time again I want people to have the ability to vote on assault weapons, mental health, safety in schools, federal trafficking, clips -- everything," Reid told reporters this afternoon. "But I cannot do that until I get a bill on the floor."
Reid explained that he'll need to find a bill to bring to the Senate floor that has at least 60 votes of support -- enough to bypass a Republican filibuster and start debate. Once debate has started on that bill, the Senate can vote on amendments, such as the assault weapons ban authored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

Doesn't shock me. If I recall, didn't the 1994 ban come in as an amendment then too? The real crisis will be the house. Will the republicans hold strong and block it, or not?

The R's will hold strong on this. This will not pass even as an amendment. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Ya gotta believe we have SOME sanity somewhere.

Don't celebrate yet. You will see universal back ground checks and an end to private sales among other things coming at you soon
