My brother is graduating from the Ventura County (CA) Sheriffs academy in 2 weeks. Any LEO's or former LEO's or anyone for that matter have some good ideas for a present that he could use? His first 3 years will be spent in the jail systems in CA, as is mandatory of any graduating sheriff. I had one recommendation from a friend who is DPD about puncture proof gloves IE: Mechanix style tactical gloves. Anyone have opinions on those? Thanks for the suggestions!

I am a Corrections Officer here in CO. Realize that most anything that is not issued is going to be considered contraband. Every rookie needs another set of handcuffs, a Zak Tool handcuff key, a good watch. I'd recommend getting him a G Shock watch if you go that route. Puncture gloves/etc will never be worn because we deal with bio-contaminants 99.9% more than we deal with sharps. Getting semen on your fancy new tac-gloves will make you want to throw them away...

BUG!!! [Coffee]

Mostly joking. A good cuff key is a good idea. A nice sturdy watch. A nice commemorative pen (cops write a lot). A good light, even if only as a backup, along the lines of Surefire, Fenix, etc.

Tell your brother to have fun at Todd road or the county jail. I grew up in Ventura 30 years of my life wasted in that hell hole, at least the weather was nice. Another +1 on a nice cuff key or watch.

Professional Liability Insurance would be my recommendation. Get him started with his first year and he can keep it up after that.

Be safe.

I was going to say a donation, made in their name, to the Oath Keepers.

I think that's illegal in CA.

The Constitution or literacy?

Maybe both. All 3 if you include the "high capacity assault clip" pouch.

Ventura County Sheriff's was a good organization when I was last in California (grew up in Ventura County myself). Congrats.

Why is it mandatory to spend the first 3 years in the jail system? Are those jobs so unpopular that they need to require people to start there to get staffing?

It gives people experience dealing with the general population.

It gives the organization experience in dealing with their new employees.

I wholeheartedly support starting your career at the bottom and working your way up. I'm still waiting for the up part [Coffee]

Thanks everyone! LaRue Tactical sent me a bunch of those pocket Constitutions, ill definitely throw some of those in. Sounds like cuffs and a cuff key are popular. Are there any stores in the Denver area that would sell quality versions of these? On a side note the Cali Constitution/literacy comments definitely gave me a chuckle...hence why I left.

+1 for Neve's. Be careful bringing that extremist, domestic terrorist propaganda to Kalifornia.
